Synology Unveils the SA3400D and UC3400: A High-Performance NAS with Dual Controllers

Synology has just released the SA3400D, a new high-performance NAS designed for demanding business environments. The SA3400D offers a dual-controller architecture, ensuring continuous service availability even in the event of hardware failure. This powerful NAS is perfect for organizations that require a reliable and efficient storage solution with minimal downtime.

The SA3400D features an Intel Xeon D-1541 CPU, with each controller housing 8 GB DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory, which can be expanded up to 64 GB per controller. With 12 drive bays, the SA3400D offers extensive storage capacity, supporting various drive types including SAS HDDs, SAS SSDs, SATA HDDs, and SATA SSDs.

The SA3400D also comes with a plethora of connectivity options, such as 2 RJ-45 1GbE LAN ports (with Link Aggregation / Failover support) per controller and a single RJ-45 10GbE LAN port per controller. The NAS can be further expanded with up to 36 drive bays using RXD1219sas expansion units. Additionally, the SA3400D features one PCIe Gen3 x8 slot (x8 link) per controller for adding high-speed network cards or SSD cache.

Comparing the SA3400D to the existing SA3400 and SA3410, the SA3400D offers the advantage of dual-controller architecture, providing higher reliability and ensuring continuous service in the event of hardware failure. The SA3400D has a slightly higher noise level (51.3 dB(A)) compared to the SA3400 (49.8 dB(A)) and the SA3410 (49.8 dB(A)). However, it maintains the same 2U form factor and is compatible with the Synology Rail Kit – RKS-02 for easy rack installation.

Synology offers a 5-year warranty for the SA3400D, ensuring long-term peace of mind for your business-critical data. With its powerful performance, extensive storage capacity, and dual-controller architecture, the SA3400D is an excellent choice for organizations that require a reliable and efficient NAS solution.

What drives are supported on SA3400D

It is disappointing to discover that the Synology SA3400D model exclusively supports Synology’s own branded HDDs. This lack of compatibility with other enterprise-class hard drives severely limits users’ options when it comes to selecting storage solutions for their systems. By restricting the choice to only Synology HAS5300 series drives, users may face potential supply chain issues, higher costs, or limited availability, ultimately hindering their ability to customize and expand their storage infrastructure based on their unique needs and preferences.

What RAM is supported on SA3400D

It is quite disappointing to learn that the Synology SA3400D model restricts its RAM support to Synology’s own branded modules, eliminating third-party options. This constraint not only reduces the flexibility and choices available for users but could also lead to potential supply shortages or higher costs when procuring additional RAM. Furthermore, the maximum supported capacity of 16GB with the D4EC-2666-16G module may prove to be inadequate for users with growing or demanding workloads, as they would be unable to utilize higher-capacity RAM modules to enhance their system’s performance. Such limitations can hinder businesses and organizations from scaling their infrastructure efficiently to meet their evolving needs.
