Hopefully, you enjoyed the ‘cup of coffee’ I bought for you :)!
So, to bring you moderately up to date: I bought the QNAP HS-453DX-8G, and two Samsung 4TB SSD drives (only, no M.2 SATA cache drives at all). The performance is “adequate” for my application, but I’d like to prepare for the days when my performance requirements increase, perhaps markedly.
If this was YOUR system (w/2x4TB SSD, RAID1), what M.2 cache drives would you buy for it, and (briefly) why? Thanks.
When choosing the best SSD for cache or even storage there are few things to look at. The most important thing is MTBF and endurance. This describes what is the life expectancy and how well it performs in harsh environments like RAID. Dual SSD cache would be on RAID1 so endurance might not be as important. But if there were 4 or more slots with RAID5 cache or similar then things would change.
With better quality parameters you will also see better warranty – usually 5 years.
If you run a web server or virtual machines then high IOPS would be useful to have.
All that is left then is speed itself. But this will often be a SATA speed around 600MB/s.
My personal choice would be Western Digital WD Red SA500 SSD and Samsung Evo in second place.
