I’m searching for a NAS with focus on file-usage-speed:
– 10GbE connection, if possible with link aggregation
– can run Plex and maybe a couple of other applications
– can use SSDs
– is quiet10+ TB
There aren’t many 10GbE options available especially if you prefer traditional RJ45 connection. But there are quite a few single and dual 10GbE LAN card available which are compatible with many Qnap NAS models. So in order to save some money, you can install 10GbE card yourself. If there are two ports available that will always mean that you can enable link aggregation and utilize doubled bandwidth.
You can run Plex on all Celeron, Intel Core or AMD processors. If you also want to do Plex transcoding than I would suggest you getting NAS with Intel Core i3,i5,i7 or AMD Ryzen processor which can do modern 4K file conversion on the fly.
When fully or partially filling your NAS with SSD drives you will achieve best file transfer performance. There are several options for installing SSD drives. You can fill one or more drive bays with SSD drives (drive trays will have extra screw holes for SSD standard) or have an SSD expansion card and install M.2 type SSD drives. Or you can get a NAS with dedicated 2.5-inch drive bays or dedicated M.2 slots for chip type SSD to save a space.
All NAS models are working at very similar noise levels. For extra noise cancelation you can choose models with a plastic case, they seem to be a bit quieter. But generally, noise is created by hard drives rather than NAS itself. The quietest hard drives so far seem to be WD Red NAS drives. These drives are made for desktop type NAS. They work at variable speed to save energy and be a bit quieter.
Which NAS will much the description above?
TS-453BT3 – will be most quite option with a plastic design. It has a single 10GbE port and dual M.2 SSD slots on the card inside.
TVS-473 (now 473e) with 10GbE card – will perform better with Plex transcoding and will let you add M.2 SSD drives inside the NAS
TVS-682T – will have dual 10GbE ports for aggregation and dedicated 2.5inch bays for SSD drives.
