“Dual SSD would cope with 4K editing on 453dx and TBS model, but again the CPU will max out at 500-700MB/s and you need 10G upgrade.”
1a_ And what would the CUP max out on the TS453bt3 with SSD installed?
1b_ You think it could run smoothly editing 1080p from Sony’s XAVC, gopro, etc?
1c_ Can 3 people work altogether? 2 via thunderbolt and 1 via 10Gbe?2a_ the Synology 1517+ might be ok if working with ssd drives through 1Gbe for 3 editors?
2b_ Is the 1517+ processor powerful enough?
2c_ You think I can run Photoshop retouch and Capture One Pro from the 1517+?3a_ If I go with the 10gbe to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor, how can I then connect it to a Macbook Pro Retina with Thunderbolt 2
4_ Is there a NAS that you can connect to the computer via USB 3, which would make speeds much faster than 1Gbe, and is probably less expensive than Thunderbolt 3?
I’m between the Synology 1517+ for it’s 5 bay
The TS453bt3 for it’s lightweight and thunderbolt connection
The 72XT for it’s power and thunderbolt
The TS-453bt3 will perform the same as other Celeron based NASes. If you fill it with SSD, technically it should work for up to 3 editors (presuming everyone needs bandwidth around 200MB/s). Two people can connect via Thunderbolt and one more via 10GbE (or two with dual port card installed).
DS1517+ (now end of life- but still someone will sell it) feature 4 LAN ports which would allow 4 people edit 1080p as long as it doesn’t require more then 120MB/s bandwidth. It would still require a 10G card (or dual 10g) and a switch. The CPU is not faster, but it geared towards delivering better data transfer speed rather then Realtek.
If you choose thunderbolt3 NAS and you want to connect it to a Thunderbolt2 computer use Apple Thunderbolt Adapter MMEL2ZM/A.
Qnap is currently working on a 5GbE USB adapter, but it will not be released for few months. This will be an option for people to get faster speeds over USB.
You can also add UX500 or UX800 for extra drive bays. When you are travelling leave expansion in the office. Once you are back you can connect it as long you set it up as separate volume.
