I have learned a lot from your videos about how to set up and use my new Asustor AS3204T NAS. One of the main uses for my NAS is to share content with relatives and friends. There are many times when I have wanted to share a large file that was too big for email and sometimes too large to practically share via google drive or services like SendBigFiles. I thought that if I had a NAS I could allow uses to download large files (sometimes as large as a 20Gb virtual machine image). The other type of sharing I would like to do is remote video streaming of family videos etc, and possibly some music streams. If I am traveling and wanted to watch a video, I’d also like to be able to do that from my laptop or tablet.
I am looking for a simple way to allow users to get to portions of my nas content. I thought that a web browser interface would be very easy for my users to operate. I saw a capability that Asustor has for “link sharing” and this seems like it might be useful for transferring large files. I have seen an application called FileFlex that seems to offer the capability that I am looking for, but it is a subscription service and I think my users would need to use a special FileFlex client.
I have been searching through lots of YouTube videos and Asustor tutorials, but I haven’t really found anything yet that seemed to do all of what I was seeking. I thought you might be able to offer some quick advice and pointers to approaches that I should use.
Yes, FileFlex will cost 30USD every year. I would recommend looking at Qnap TS-451A witch come with EXFAT licence included allowing you to store and share files in enormous sizes (more info on exfat here).
You can also use other Qnap models but you will need to purchase a license here.
File sharing on Qnap is very easy. You can choose to share a file or entire folder. Simply do a right click on a file or folder and choose how long you want to share it for. Easy file sharing management will also help you to see what exactly you are sharing and with who.
You can also enable WEBDAV which will allow you to add a network drive on your computer – accessible even over internet. Here is more info.
