NAS needed for Video/Motion Graphics. Hi, We are a small corporate video production company. We produce some videos with motion graphics and typically have two editors working on the footage simultaneously. We are currently working with a Pegasus3 R6 and shuttling work footage via external hard drive as sequences are finished. I’d like to tie both computers to storage so they can access the footage and sequences more directly. I was considering a QNAP with T3 but you referenced that it’s really “thunderbolt3 over IP.” We like the speed we can connected to the Pegasus3 but only one computer is allowed.
You might be talking about tvs-1282t3. This is the most innovative release so far and also very popular choice among video editors. It allows 4 people to simultaneously connect and even more people over the 10GbE ports. When qnap just started with their first Thunderbolt NAS solutions they had few speed limitations because of the way they did things. But now latest tests show Qnap achieving 1500-1900MB/s with SSD filled NAS. Some software doesn’t support network drives as a storage device, but ISCSI is the way to go around it. The main reason people choose this very same NAS for video editing is its Tiered storage technology. Qnap will automatically move data across different storage media to get you the best transfer speeds based on access frequency. You can add M.2 for caching, regular drive for cold storage, SSD for warm storage and NVME for hot storage. Competitors have found out that Qnap is dominating in this niche and started to work on their solutions. This is the next logical step before you switch to the rackmount solution.
