Would you mind giving me a little more advice please. It’s not clear whether a Celeron CPU with a discrete GPU is better for transcoding than one with raw CPU power. I had a look on your website but couldn’t find the answer there either. I don’t suppose when you do the PLEx tests you ranked the NAS’s on a spreadsheet?
If you were looking to build a PLEX server, using a tower NAS, what would your top four NAS’s of choice be at a sensible choice, aka up to £1500 diskless?
Yes, might be confusing sometimes. Simply because transcoding via native apps like DS Video and Plex is very different. You can deal with 4K files in DS Video simply with a graphics chip. But Plex do not have same access to this chip. First of all, you need a license to be able to access this resource. On top of that Plex itself is a very heavy app and do not do a very good job with this GPU chip anyway.
So if you need to transcode 1080p then you are OK with Celeron quad-core CPUs like 20+ series.
If you need 4K transcoding then you need to look at i7 based NAS (or i5 with is more limited). The built-in graphics chip is still too weak to deal with 4K, but at least you have it there. And CPU itself can crunch down the rest. With Xeon based NAS its CPU does all the heavy lifting straight away without GPU help.
So TVS-1282 / TVS-872XT / TS-1685 / DS1621xs+ / DS3617XS are options for 4K.
I hope this helps.
