SSD Cache functionality using USB3 attached external hard drive

USB 3.0 as a cache for TS-431XeU

Please let me approach you with an easy and simple question. I’m considering buying TS-431XeU-2G, however, I would like to know if I can use for SSD Cache functionality a USB 3 attached external hard drive (let’s say an M2 drive in an external enclosure), because all 4 bays I want to use in “standard = cold data” way as a storage.

Neither Synology nor Qnap will let you use externals drives for caching. SSD needs to be installed in one of the following methods:

• HDD Bays
• M.2 slots on the motherboard
• PCI card
• Expansion unit drive bays

So TS-431XeU won’t let you install SSD for caching in any other way but in HDD bays.

If you need a cache – consider any rackmount with PCIe slot.
