Asustor made quite an impression at the recent computed show, flaunting an array of new products that generated quite a buzz. While the Flashstor 6 and 12 Pro garnered considerable attention, there was also the quiet introduction of the new Home/Prosumer/SMB AS54 series, boasting a 2/4-Bay NAS system that is likely to make a splash in the market.
The new desktop NAS systems – the AS5404T and AS5402T – are refreshes of the Nimbustor series that was initially released back in 2019. These newer models have now been upgraded with a state-of-the-art Intel Celeron CPU, DDR4 Memory, 2/4 SATA HDD bays, and interestingly, they also include four M.2 NVMe SSD slots – an upgrade very much in line with the recent Gen 2 refresh of the Lockerstor series.
On top of the internal upgrades, Asustor has upgraded the USB ports to USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gb/s) and retained the system’s 2.5GbE x2 Network Connectivity, which bolsters its already impressive capabilities.
Here’s a quick rundown of the key features:
- Intel N5105 Celeron CPU, operating between 2-2.9Ghz with Integrated Graphics
- 4GB DDR4 Memory
- 2x / 4x SATA HDDs
- 4x PCIe Gen 3 m.2 NVMe Bays
- 2x 2.5GbE Network Connections
- HDMI 2.0b 4K 60FPS Output
- 3x USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s Ports
- 65W/90W External PSU
- 1x 70mm / 1x 120mm Rear Fan
- Dimensions: 170(H) x 114(W) x 230(D) mm / 170(H) x 174(W) x 230(D) mm
- 3-Year Warranty
The Nimbustor 2/4 from 2019 was a system that, in my opinion, was significantly underrated, often overshadowed by its larger counterparts in the Lockerstor series. However, these new AS5402T and AS5404T models represent a considerable step forward, offering cutting-edge upgrades and the inclusion of a two-tier storage system within a compact form factor. These additions are expected to make these new models extremely compelling and competitive throughout 2023/2024.
Regarding the pricing, we anticipate that the AS54 series will be priced comparably to the $350/$450 (excl. TAX) of the AS52/53 series. However, a slight increase might be expected, considering the inclusion of the new features and the passage of years since the last release.
