Synology DS420+ Diskstation NAS – Small Leaked Details
With such a large and well-established portfolio of NAS hardware released over the years, Synology has done an exceptional job of maintaining their product families. The Play, the J, the XS and, of course, the PLUS series. Over the years we have seen additions (big and small) to the Synology + range but one range that has seen relative silence in about 5 years is the DS4xx+ family. Last entry being the DS415+, this has largely been absorbed by the DS9xx+ series – till now apparently. We have been passed a document that details that the DS420+ is being worked on at Synology and although we know precious little about it, it is interesting to see this develop, whether it will serve as an alternative to the DS4xxplay series, or a fully-fledged 4-Bay from Synology in 2020. Perhaps it might serve as a 1Gbe alternative to the hotly speculated 2.5Gbe DS920+, to refine the product line, or perhaps we are looking at a series reshuffle – it is just too early to say.

Disclaimer – If you are looking for hardware specifications (CPU, memory, connections, architecture) then you might want to stop reading now. This article is about the information that indicates that the DS920+ NAS is very much in development. If you came for the data sheets and specs, I am afraid I will disappoint you on this one for now.
What do we know about the DS420+ Synology NAS so far?
As mentioned, details on a DS420+ NAS are exceptionally small at this stage and largely open to conjecture. The DS420+ NAS has been brought to our attention thanks to the following import/export doc:
Now, let’s discuss what the above doc means. We have seen examples in the past of import/export docs relating to new hardware from many brands that ended up not arriving at the commercial level, or being held, reimagined and arriving in a bigger, better and more modern form down the line (DS619slim > DS620slim for example), but these are quite formal steps for a brand to take and I think would heavily indicate that this NAS is very much on the way. The DS420+ NAS release is an unexpected move from Synology and even if we stay as objective as possible here, if real, it is likely a move to make a separation between the hardware options of a DS920+, 2.5Gbe, eSATA expandability, NVMe SSD Slots, etc, with a more classic 4-Bay NAS option with 1Gbe and reliance on just the 4, non-expandable bays.

When Do We think the Synology DS420+ 4-Bay NAS will be Released?
Of course, the release of the Synology DS420+ NAS is the bigger unknown than everything else. I think we can comfortably state a few things, if indeed the DS420+ Diskstaiton information above relates to concrete product development. 1, that the naming of the product into the DSx20+/2020 naming convention relates to it being a release in the first 6-8motnhs of the year, as Synology typically will assign the YEAR stamp to a model ID when it arrives in the first half (8 months at a push) of the year, with anything afterwards being designated the year after (eg 2021 / DSx21+). The next consideration is, of course, the impact of COVID-19 on all areas of brand production, distribution and buyer engagement. This means that we can certainly consider that the DS420+ (if at all) in late Summer, early autumn. Many would have no doubt speculated this already (as they did last year for 2019/2020), but still never the less this does seem to be a more formal step in the right direction.
