I’m looking for a NAS that’ll stream my FLAC-Music-Collection without problems.
I just stumbled upon Plex a few months ago, looking for music players and started running it on my PC.
What really sold me was the ability to sync music with my phone, so that I could listen to it offline as well.
Up until then I moved files to the phone via USB, which can get kind of annoying with my pretty big library.I’m only just exploring the other possibilities PLEX is providing me with, such as syncing my (RAW-)photo-library easily across devices.
In any case, I’ll never really need to stream high end video-files, as that is not something I use a lot of (no TV-Screen in my home, not a lot of movies being watched here).
Do I still need a rather expensive NAS to make sure the music streams smoothly or could I go with a cheaper option?
I’d be very thankful if you could point me in the right direction.
The video transcoding functionality is the reason why people buy relatively expensive NAS. The Audio is much much less power demanding. You can easily do then with a one bay solution like DS118 or if you prefer a RAID protection then DS218j (DS218play if you might stream films in the future). If that is still not enough and you need more storage space then DS418 will allow you to RAID 4 drives.
Synology is a top choice among NAS users for multimedia compatibility. They seem to support more file formats than other – including FLAC audio files. Now Plex has also created compatible Plex installation package allowing any model to run PMS.
