I am a small print and advertising company and work from my home and shop. I do drone video and photography in addition to printing and design.
Therefore I need a NAS to place in one location and be able to access from anywhere. I would also like to have access to a large collection of movies from all family devices. Listed are the things I would like to use the NAS for in order of importance:1.) To backup all data for my business (printing company), which includes a home office, all of which are Mac based.
2.) My son has a freeNAS at his home and would like to backup to his and his to mine for redundant data safety.
3.) I have a home security system (4 cameras), unopened given as a gift, which I would like to use with the NAS.
4.) I have a great amount of drone footage, photos and video to which I edit into movies. (Both work and hobby)
5.) I have a large collection of movies ( over 600) in my iTunes library that I would like to access from anywhere on any of my personal devices.I have viewed your very helpful videos and learned a great deal from them. I have narrowed it down to QNAP TVS-673e 8GB with four 6TB Seagate Exos HD’s
and a fifth as a hot spare. Can’t decide if I need a raid 5 or 6 configuration. If you have any advice regarding this matter or a better suggestion for a different NAS or configuration I would very much appreciate it!
As long as multimedia is accessed in the local network only – QNAP TVS-673e is a good choice. If you think you would stream videos also over the internet then I would suggest TS-653B which feature transcoding engine. It has direct connectivity, SD card slot, dual LAN and most important – PCIe slot for 10GbE and SSD cache upgrade. This might be very useful if you decide to edit 4K directly from the NAS.
You can set up automatic MAC and Windows image backups as well as keep folder synchronized just like Dropbox.
You can also setup RSYNC to synchronize things between you NAS and FreeNAS.
You can also add more than 4 security cameras and have a surveillance system which you control even from your phone.
Qnap NAS can also be set up as iTunes server. You can store all your collection on the NAS and stream it to your apple devices.
