DROBO alternative for video editing

I just ordered a DROBO solution from Amazon… but now thinking that I made a mistake and need to switch it over to a Synology NAS… so that I can have access to my information via the internet on my laptop.

My major usage is for Photography and Video work I do for Family… putting together Bluray slideshows of vacations, weddings, … etc.

I’m wanting to install a NAS solution for my Home use on an existing 1 Gbit ethernet LAN… and I don’t know what will be required to connect the Synology? Will it connect via ethernet cable to my Router… and that is all that is necessary…. other than downloading and setting up the software, etc.

Will this perform well enough if I’m trying to upgrade/edit photos and video from my PC using Photoshop and Premiere Pro for photos and video editing? Or, will I have to do my editing directly on files attached directly to my PC… and then only use the NAS for a storage solution. The DROBO would have been connected to a USB 3.0 (5 gbps) connection vs a 1 gbps LAN connection?

If I wanted to upgrade to 10 Gbit Ethernet LAN would I then need to replace my Router with a “capable” 10 Gbit capability with higher grade cables connected between my PC, Router, and NAS.

I would appreciate any helpful advice or pointers in direction to areas where there might be articles providing more information on the specifics associated with the physical implementation of the NAS network requirements… e.g. LAN, PC, NAS cables and how they all interconnect.

Looking a Synology 5 or 8 bay NAS solution

Drobo DAS and Synology NAS are quite different in they way of use. Both protect you against drive failure but Drobo will connect directly and appear as extra drive on your operating system.

Whereas NAS will appear similar like Drobo drive, but it will be treated as network drive and some editing software versions will not allow direct editing from the NAS drive. For this reason NAS creators created workaround called ISCSI which will trick the your operating system that NAS drive is actually like a Drobo DAS drive.

But when editing directly from the storage device, you need to ensure that there is enough bandwidth to do smooth editing. Regular network speed is around 100MB/s which is enough to edit photos or HD video files. But if you need to edit something bigger like 4k – it will require better connectivity. The 10GbE network would sort this problem and work faster than USB3.0. Based on number of Drives/SSD and the RAID type the speed can ber around 300-1000MB/s in a 6 bay solution.

In order to connect over 10GbE you dont need to even buy a switch if you are the only editor. You can still connect the NAS to the regular switch/router and use 10GbE connection to connect your editing machine directly. All you need is PC 10GbE card or Mac Thunderbolt to 10GbE adapter. And of course cat6a /cat7 cable.

I would recommend getting DS1618+ for this task.
