Two separate NAS as RAID1. We’re interested in redundant storage – but external redundancy rather than internal. Instead of dual controllers, we’d like two single–controller boxes operating together. We’re looking for two SAN devices which we could combine into a RAID1 such that if either device failed, our data would still be readable in the other SAN. They’d need to provide iSCSI over 10GbE.
Does such a beast exist? Or is most commodity hardware designed with all the bells & whistles of a NAS?
Yes, there is such a beast. Last week we have been doing hands-on tests with Synology high availability solutions. This means – there are two identical NAS systems – let’s say RS2818RP+ (rackmount) or DS1618+ (desktop).
The two servers communicate via a Heartbeat connection. When the active server becomes unavailable, the passive server automatically kicks in an takes over.
Our test involved two desktop NASes. We started upload tasks, then disconnected one NAS and other one automatically took over in around 30 seconds. It continued uploading files with no problems. In the office environment – people probably would not notice what just happened.
So, yes, you can have RAID1 dual NAS solution and it will work. Synology will support dual 10GbE or even 40GbE card upgrade with ISCI connectivity. So you can have NAS and SAN solution. You can choose, one, another or both.
