Big nas vs DIY server

Big nas vs DIY server. I’m thinking about either buying a big NAS or building my own.

Small simple NAS’s have some benefits compared to a file server you build yourself for similar prices, like power consumption.

Do these kind of benefits still exist in the higher end NAS’s, like for example the DS3617xs or the QNAP TS1685. If you want similar performance, can you buy for the same money a decent casing, a motherboard, processor of similar strength and a raid controller? And what about the power consumption of such a system?

I don’t plan on using all bays at the start, but it seems that with NAS’s you can’t buy a NAS with high specs and a low amount of bays, planning to expand it with expansion units.

If you have an IT background, you may consider building your own NAS. It would turn out to be cheaper or similar price. But keep in mind that you don’t get any support on such a system. So be ready to spend time fixing and updating things yourself. The power consumption will be the same if you compare similar spec Qnap NAS with 500W power supply.

If you like spending time and fixing things – this is a way to go. If you need a stable system with included support and warranty – go NAS.
