NAS Selection for a specific niche
Good morning! Love your videos! I am new to the NAS world and have viewed a lot of your videos and would like your opinion on which NAS would best suite my specific needs. I work on boats for long periods of time and me and my shipmates have no access to any internet, so what we usually do is bring vast amounts of movies, TV shows, and games on our personal computers and usb hardrives. However with limited space on a boat (i share a room with 5 shipmates), and no internet connection to establish a traditional NAS that is connected to the internet, i am struggling to figure out which product i should buy. I like the idea of getting something the size of the DS720+ but cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone about its ability to work without an internet connection.
My needs
-Relatively small and portable
-Be able to store movies, shows, possibly games via steam?
-Easy access to transfer said movies and shows to multiple computers without an internet connection (we are used to using usb transfers from standard external hardrives).General questions, forgive me i am new to this and the technical info goes over my head.
-Without an internet connection does a NAS essentially become a very large external hardrive?
-Can I still use something like a usb cable to transfer files on and off the device or are transfers purely over a wireless connection?
-Can I stream videos, movies, and play games located on my NAS directly onto devices such as a laptop or phone? Does it require a internet connection to do so or do i need a physical usb connection to my computer to do this?
Yes, NAS stands for network storage. You can create you own small network on a boat. Depending on your power reliability you may also need UPS to keep things smooth.
The easiest way to store large volumes of data and access it easily would be using a DAS instead of NAS. Pegasus, Areca, Lacie (2big, 4big). You can connect to each computer to upload/offload or access the data. But you are limited to one connection.
Qnap TVS-472XT would allow connecting also via Thunderbolt while it is still accessible via Ethernet. Or TVS-473e would allow connecting via front USB while still having network access.
But with truly NAS like DS718+ you could connect directly via LAN to your Laptop with a manual IP address. Or use a very small 4 port switch and have the ability to connect from multiple devices simultaneously.
No internet required. If you get a small managed switch it will automatically generate IP address for all devices in your small network, otherwise, you can do this manually.
DS718+ is a very good choice, but if you need something more energy efficient for a boat then Synology slim series like DS419slim/ 620slim even with just 2 drives inside would do the trick.
I hope this helps.
