4 Bay NAS for remote and local access and file sharing

I’m thinking 4 bay.
To raid over 4 bays , and maybe upgradable of HD’s for future.
To have access online when im not about
Have direct access when in the office and over the network.
Is it also possible to have a NAS that works to enable my client to see a proof with a direct link to a select file?
To run my media files music and so on. Like Spotify and Sonos?
Would it be better to have SSD drives?
Do I go QNAP or Synology ? or do you have anything else in mind?

A 4-bay NAS is a very clever choice because you get most capacity with a one drive failure protection. One bay would mean a half capacity lost for redundancy task but in a 4 bay NAS you can start with 3 drives and add one more later as your storage needs grow. As a first NAS for sake of simplicity people tend to choose Synology. The most popular choice now is DS918+ which will do everything you want it to do. It will also last as an investment for a minimum of 5 years. You can mix different size drives inside as well as attach additional 5 bays. You share files and folders with your friends over the secure channel. And of course, you can access it locally over the local network. The NAS will appear as an additional hard drive on your computer where you can copy files from and to.

Synology includes free apps like DS Audio which can be played on your speaker over the LAN or Bluetooth connection. SSD drives will not increase the file transfer speed because you will be limited to 1GbE ethernet. But if you do want to speed up apps like Plex then it could be useful. But if you don’t use apps like that- then nothing to worry about.  Many people start with a budget option like DS418 as a basic NAS capable of all these tasks. But those who need a bit more of future proofing choose ds918+
