40GbE NAS

Currently on a QNAP TVS-871T 24TB over 10GB network and its been great for 11 users. We’re looking to change the way we work with more cache files for our 3d animation workflows plus more users up to 20 on the network. We’ve been given lots of conflicting advice so would be good to know what is future proof if we upgrade to 40gb network in the future, but obviously not overly throttling it now for 10gb. We’ve been told about NVMe systems by supermicro and also both the (QNAP TVS-882ST3-i7) or (QnapTS-832XU-4G 19″Rack NAS) with 32TB SSD drives for our daily access and then large disk storage for older files/archiving. Would be good to get an unbias view as its hard to see past the sales pitches.

Qnap TS-832XU is not going to work with 40GbE card. This is a NAS for simply fast backups and file storage. Features like caching and nvme will not be something this NAS can cope with.
TVS-871T was an amazing release. Since then they released TVS-882ST3-i7 with two generations newer CPU and TVS-1282T3 with 3 generations newer gen7 series processor.  These will be very good candidates.

But considering rackmount version of a NAS is a good idea. Having 40Gbit output will either require a lot of hard drives, or SSD or at least some NVMe storage.

Qnap 72XT series NAS features built-in NVMe slots that can be used for cache or storage.  I would choose TS-877XU which come with built-in 10GbE ports and also additional PCIe slots for even 40GbE card. You can easily expand the storage by stacking expansion boxes.  You can also use couple of bays for SSD cache or install NVMe SSD cache card. With more users not only cache is useful but also dual power supply enduring reliability.
