dyi freenas, nas devices both with 10gbe
So I am looking to create fast storage for my vmware clusters in my home lab. I currently have two nas I have been using for this but they are abysmally slow. ts-212p and ts-212. I am building two freeenas boxes which will have 10gbe in them. I also wanted to buy at least one if not two nas appliances. I was leaning to dual bay raid 0 for higher performance (lower costs etc) and they will be backed up so I do not really care if I lose the nas ie lose a drive with two drives in raid 0. I would prefer 10gbe since I already have the 10gbe infrastructure. I am very technical so I can tinker a bit but do not want to take all my lab time fussing with NAS. more focused on network\vmware\automation so open API a plus. What nas do you recommend knowing that almost anything will be a substantial step up from ts-212p? Tells you how long ago I bought a nas it wsa expensive when I bought it. a ahaahahh
so priority is 10gbe, speed, vmware compatible (nfs or iscsi), currently getting by with 2tb so low space requirement but could go north of 8tb eventually
Varies depending on the day.
currently using 2tb
Pretty much every model is VMware compatible. You can create ISCSI LUNs and connect to your virtual machines as a storage. But there are also VMware ready models with included tools, reports and additional functionality.
The cheapest VMware ready model is TS-253Be. But you can find a full list Bellow. You can install 10GbE card in this 2-bay and have a fast storage source.
