DS1819+ vs TVS-872XT – best 10G video editing storage

I really like the synology boxes. Would the 1819+ really be fast enough if I used all 1tb SSDs in it, with just me editing over 10gbe?

If yes… Then can I install 1 NIC in my workstation, in a pcie x4 slot and direct connect to the 1819+ via cat6a or cat7.. and have my onboard NIC connect to my router for internet service via 1gbe over cat5?

If yes.. Which 10gbe card for the workstation? Could I get a dual 10gbe card and get faster speeds directly connected?

Is the synology atom processor really fast enough for the 4k editing with only 1 editor (me)?

I also saw that you got 370mb read and 160mb write on 10gbe for a couple videos (will that be fast enough)? Can I get away with WD Red drives or do I need SSDs? I AM ok with spending the money on SSDs if necessary.

However.. IF I might run into the synology not being fast enough, then I would go the qnap route. But I really like shr-2. Is this similar to Raid6?

If I get the qnap would I use raid 6? I like the idea of 2 drives having to fail to lose everything, but write speeds take a huge hit correct?

IF I go the 872.. I could use (2) 1tb nvme drives in raid 0, then after editing transfer them to the HDDs correct? This would be WAY faster than the 1819+ right? Would that be my best option?

Are the HDDs a separate network drive at that point?

How do you configure the SSDs separate from the HDDs?

Raid6 the HDDs?

DS1819+ would be fast enough to edit 4K via 10GbE. With SSD inside – probably even more then 1 user. You can even split the bays in two halves to make the price per terabyte more affordable. Three or four SSD in a RAID5 or even raid 10 (or even RAID0 with a automated backup to HDD).

Yes you can install 10GbE card on PCIe x4 and direct connect via cat6a with a simple IP setup – you can find a list of cheapest cards here : https://nascompares.com/2017/12/14/cheapest-10gb-1-port-pci-express-network-cards-rj45/

You can also add internet connectivity via slower 1GbE port.

You can even get dual 10GbE card and set up link aggregation on a smart switch and a PC. But not all Windows operating system do support this (it will need to be Pro version). But you don’t need that much of the data transfer speed to edit 4K.

Atom CPU is made for network storage and it does that well. Xeon and core i processors are obviously faster, but they are made for multitasking and heavy trans-coding, encrypting and other CPU demanding operations.

To edit 4K you may need somewhere around 200-400MB/s bandwidth (depending on layers and frame-rate). So technically with WR Red pro drives you could also edit most of the 4K.

If you decide to choose Qnap alternative, then there is nothing better for editng then 72XT series (472xt, 672xt, 872xt). You can edit on NVMe (RAID0/ RAID1) SSD and store media afterwards on HDD. You do not get Synology SHR2. But it works the same way as RAID6, withou ability to mix different size drives in the RAID. RAID6 is not a popular choice, because of the low likelihood of two disks failing at the same time. And speed would also be effected once there are two disks to be looked after.

The 72XT series will be faster then 1819+ in any way possible. It is ultimate video editor choice.
