Dual LAN NAS – Can you connect to the router/switch and PC direct at the same time
Probably a stupid question but I am looking at buying the DS718+ And I had a question.
As the DS718+ has two RJ45 ports, one will be used for the router but can you use the other for a direct link to a workstation?
It is actually a very normal question. You can indeed use one port to connect to the router and another one for connecting your PC. It is very useful if you happen to have no 10GbE switch but you do have 10G Lan card on a NAS and PC (not ds718+). Just set up manual same range IP address on both ends and you are good to go. With Qnap NAS you can set up virtual switch if you want to share internet from incoming LAN to outgoing LAN to the PC.

Great that you are trying to address this frustrating topic! I have a TS-453A which has 4 ethernet ports. I would like to use one for upstream to my cable modem, and 3 to connect to my LAN devices (eg a switch or hub, PC etc) as well as connect containers and VMs to have their own IP addresses in the same subnet. Is this possible (and indeed is it sane)?
From the example you given above. How can I ensure that the UNC path to the NAS would be 10G direct connection but not the 1G one? I’m currently looking to put a 2.5G adapter on both my DS920+ and PC and connect them directly.
