I am interested in a NAS drive mostly for Plex 4k, HDR, H.265 formats. Most often I will be streaming to a Nvidia Shield so I know I will not need transcoding for that device. I will sometimes stream to my cell phone remotely over the internet and at a friends house in a different city over the internet. There devices may not be as powerful as the nvidia shield tv.. I would also like to backup all the data on my 1tb laptop if the NAS can be used for plex and data backup simultaneously. I would like to have access to all of my files remotely over the internet on my cell phone if possible. If i cannot do both then my biggest need is plex. Thank you for offering this service.
In order to stream Plex 4k, HDR, H.265 on Nvidia Shield TV you do not need powerful NAS, but you do need a wired network. For remote video access, you will need to set up port forwarding to your shield tv. I would still suggest standard DS218 (or DS418 if 4 bays needed) or DS218+ (DS418play- if 4 bay) for remote access over the internet. Sometimes plex might struggle transcoding HDR video files, then its good to know you have a Synology DS Video app available just in case for 10bit 4K transcoding.
For a complete image backup of your laptop drive or mobiles, Acronis backup software might be handy. Otherwise built-in backup apps will back things up, syncronize folders and even offer previous versions of files if needed.
Acronis True Image is a backup software which will let you backup Computers, Android Phones or Apple iPhones to your NAS. It is an incredible app because not only it can backup few folders, but also an entire image of your computer. This is super important if you need to get your computer restored ASAP after a massive system crash, virus or other disasters (Manual to set up NAS as backup destination). Backing up a mobile device means capturing all of the data – including contacts, calendar, photos, videos and other files – so you still have them if something happens to your smartphone or tablet.
Backup software for mobile devices makes sure you are saving copies frequently, reliably and safely. It automatically produces a backup and makes it easy to restore your files.
