Netgear Ready Nas NV+ alternative

Replacing Netgear NV+

My Netgear NV+ died. I had 4 2Gb drives with RAID4; I had two external USB drives for further backup (snapshots); I was using a UPS (USB connection); I use iTunes, photo (OSX), logitech app, time machine, connection to Roku3. I would like a similar config, reusing the 4 drives I have, external drives and UPS, possibly with a few more bays but not necessarily. What would be the best options?

Netgear was fairly popular choice for multimedia use as they supported features like:

  • DLNA Certified media server
  • Logitech Squeezebox
  • Sonos Digital Music Center
  • Network DVD player compatible
  • Windows MCE compatible
  • Sony PlayStation 3
  • Microsoft Xbox 360

But this is a very outdated NAS now and Synology and Qnap will offer so much more and much smoother experience.

If you get Synology plus series dual NAS then with high availability function enabled if something happens to a main unit other will take over in seconds.

With Synology you also get excellent mobile apps for surveillance and video as well as Music streaming. You can also mix and match drives, upgrade the drive size as well as add expansion unit and add more drives to the RAID.

Perfect replacement for this Netgear model would be DS418play (or DS918+ with expansion option, or 5-bay DS1019+).

Also Qnap TS-451+ is still a good choice for 1080p videos and TS-453be (or 6bay TS-653B) for 4K videos.
