Reliable 4K streaming NAS

I am a cord cutter and I’m looking to setup a NAS that’s primary use will be primarily as a media streamer to my main tv and a few other devices/phones. My biggest concern will be picture quality when streaming 4k to the main tv, the other devices I’m not as worried about. Basically, I just am looking for the best quality streams and everything else I’m not really concerned about.

My secondary concern would be able to run a large number of applications to manage and get new media.

Ease of use and write speeds aren’t a concern for me at all. Price is a concern but it’s less than a dollar figure I’m looking at and more of the price matching the performance.

If you need reliable 4K stream whatever happens in a network you should consider NAS with HDMI port. Your stream will not be affected if others will be using NAS for streaming, backups or other tasks. You should also look at NAS which can do both encoding formats H264 and H265 with 10bit color depth. Luckily there are many options out there which will be a perfect match. You should consider two or 4 drive Qnap models x53a, x53B

All of these NAS models will run many apps and also let you stream 4K. My suggestion is 253B or 453B (only difference is a number of drives) it will do more 4K formats.

x53A – HDMI, up to 4K 2160P 30Hz Ultra HD support

x53B – dual-channel 4K H.264/H.265 hardware decoding and real-time transcoding

x73  – HDMI 1.4b for displaying up to 3840 x 2160 4K H.264
