WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra
I have a diskless WD My Cloud EX 2 Ultra which I want to put two 4TB cmr drives in. The Hard Drive Compatibility List is very small on the WD support page (https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/130). I ordered two WD40EFRX and was sent two WD40EFAx drives which I have sent back. I was think about geeting possibly two Seagate Ironwolf 4tb but they are not on the Compatibility List. I would like to know if anyone has put non WD drivers in the WD My Cloud EX 2 Ultra and it work.
Virtually any drive will work with a 2-bay system since all data is simply mirrored. If you have SMR drives instead of CMR then you would only notice a rebuild difference in RAID5 or RAID6.
WD compatibility lists are kept short since they want to sell their own drives. But you can see they have added Baracide desktop drives on the list which needs the same amount of power to run. Ironwolf drives are very similar. So yes, you can use Ironwolf HDDs.
Here is their compatibility list.
I hope this helps.

Mmm – I have the WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra & while the NAS has operated fine I have had, & continue to have, an issue with a solid red light on HD1 – it comes on every few weeks and a reboot resets everything.
I have 2 Seagate Iron Wolf Pro Drives fitted – both 8tb. The NAS is set up as a mirrored RAID.
I had the first red light on HD1 a couple of weeks after I set thye NAS up, I rebooted it and while the red light went away it came back after a few days. Thinking the HDD had a fault I RMA’d it to Seagate who provided me with a replacement. I fitted the replacement drive and after a couple of weeks the red light returned to HD1 – HD2 has NEVER had a red light. Again a re-boot solved the problem temporarily but at this stage I was convinced the drives themselves were OK. After a few weeks the red light returned and this time I decided to swap my drives around but again after a few weeks the red light returned.
So according to my WD NAS I have THREE defective Seagate Iron Wolf Pros – something isn’t right and while the NAS works fine I am now going to change to Synology which (hopefully) will be a better solution all round.
I had an old and very reliable Netgear Stora which didn’t skip a beat for years – even when I turned it off for the final time it was as good as gold, just no longer supported and a bit slow. The WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra is poor by comparison.
Yes, sounds like it could be bridgeboard problem. Synology is indeed more polished solution.
Seagate seagate exos 7e8, Enterprise, 8TB works with wd my cloud EX2 Ultra with no problem. I had 2 of them (ST8000NM0055), one with SN02 FW and the other one SN04 FW, later i did upgraded both to SN05, any configuration worked just fine.
Hello,
I also have a EX2 Ultra which came with 2 6TB WD drives. But i am running out of space fast and would like to switch out the drives with 2 Toshiba MG08ACA16TE. WD support says they are not compatible. But the Compatibility list they send me only contains WD Drives. Not a single Drive from a different Vendor. Hope somebody maybe have tested the Toshiba Drives i want to use and can confirm that it is working (Ordering the drives will cost a few bucks above 500€) so it would be nice to know if it workes in advance.
It should work, Not long ago they were listing Seagate drives on their compatibility list https://nascompares.com/answer/wd-my-cloud-compatible-hard-drives/
I contacted WD and they said it would not work. But i ordered 2*MG08ACA16TE anyways. And what can i say. It is working fine. Even faster compared to the two 6TB WD Red drives. And they stay ~4-5°C cooler during long copy sessions. The only downside i can see, the Toshiba drives are noticeably louder. So if you have the NAS standing right beside you, you will hear the drives working (for sure). But 32TB at a fraction of the price WD HDDs would have cost is worth it!
