DSM 7 Installation Guide ā€“ Setting Your Synology NAS Up Right ā€“ FIRST TIME!

If you have purchased your new Synology NAS (or it is soon to be arriving and you want to be prepared to set it up), then congratulations! You are on your way to enjoying your very own private storage solution that can allow you to access your data in your home, business or remotely anywhere in the world. However, it is worth noting that although a lot of the setup of a Synology NAS is quite straightforward, there are a number of early choices during the initial installation that, if made incorrectly or in haste, cannot be reversed without restoring the system to factory settings. Therefore it is understandable that when setting up your Synology NAS for the first time, that you want to get it right the first time too! So today I want to start my 5 part series here on NASCompares where I will be guiding yoU through setting up your Synology as smoothly as possible. This guide has been made using a number of setup elements from Synologyā€™s own resources, along with my own recommendations on your setup and links to more unique tutorials you may find helpful. In part 1, we will be going through setting the NAS up physically, initializing the DSM 7 software and services, creating a storage area, multiple users, customizing the security settings to your needs and establishing safe remote access to your Synology NAS. The following guide (part one at least) should take you a little under over 30 minutes to do EVERYTHING, with the remaining parts being a little more optional and centred around more user-specific applications and services. If you would prefer to follow the video guide on this, I have released a 9 Part video guide series for Synology NAS in 2022 available below. Otherwise, letā€™s get started on setting up your Synology NAS.

Here are the 9 Parts of the Synology Video Guide Series

What you will need when setting up your Synology NAS the first time.

  • A Synology NAS (duh!)
  • An active internet connection and Router/Modem (not essential, but will make initial setup and firmware 10x easier)
  • Access to a Router or Switch that is also accessible with a client computer/mobile device
  • An available mains power outlet

That is all you need for Part 1 of this guide. Letā€™s begin.

Physical Installation of a Synology NAS

Physical Installation of the hard drives or SSD into the Synology NAS is very, very easy and is completely toolless (for Hard drives, SSD require you to use 4 screws for each that are in the accessories box). Once you have unboxed all the accessories, you need to remove the trays (all of them, or as many as you need for your hard drives).

Then each tray has removable clips on either side. Once removed, you can slot the hard drive into the tray, with the connector facing out and the manufacturer label facing up.

Then put the clips back, ensuring the 4 plugs are inserted into the holes on the drive. Then just slide each tray+drive back into the NAS. Once this is done, connect the power brick into the rear of the NAS and then the mains power lead into the power brick and the wall socket.

Finally, you need to connect the network LAN cable into the network port on the rear of the NAS and connect the other end to your router, modem or switch (in simple speak, the box your internet service provider have you or the box the other internet things are connected to. You can now click the power button on the front of the NAS and you will hear a beep and the device will take around 2-3mins to initialise. If you are having difficulty with the physical installation of your Synology NAS, you can use the first part of the video below, where I will show you each step of the physical installation and then move on to the DSM 7 setup with the Synology Assistant and Web GUI via your browser.

The Synology NAS runs on its very own operating system, known as Diskstation Manager (DSM) and this is what separates it from most traditional USB direct-attached storage (DAS) and network drives that are just brainless storage. DSM allows users to run hundreds of applications, each with their own user interface (UI) on the NAS, that they can access on desktop computers, mobile devices and media devices. After you have installed hard drives and booted the device up, and found the device in your network (using the free Synology Assistant application for PC/Mac or DS Finder mobile app) you will be asked to proceed with the Synology DSM installation.

Install DSM 7 using a desktop Web Browser with the Web Assistant

Your Synology NAS comes with a built-in tool, Web Assistant, which helps you download the latest version of DSM from the Internet and install it on your Synology NAS. To use Web Assistant, follow the steps below:
1. Power on your Synology NAS.
2. Open a web browser on a computer within the same network where your Synology NAS is located, and go to ā€œfind.synology.comā€. The status of your NAS should be Not installed.
3. Select your Synology NAS and click Connect on Web Assistant.
4. Click Install to start the installation process and follow the on-screen instructions

ā€¢ Both your Synology NAS and computer must be on the same local network.
ā€¢ We suggest using Chrome or Firefox as the browser for DSM installation.
ā€¢ For more information on the setup of Synology NAS and DSM, please refer to the Hardware Installation Guide for your Synology NAS models available via Synologyā€™s Download Center

5. Select your Synology NAS and tap INSTALL to start the installation process and follow the onscreen instructions.

Notes:
ā€¢ We take Android 10 as an example in this chapter. The actual steps may vary across OS versions and devices.
ā€¢ Both your Synology NAS and mobile device must be on the same local network.
ā€¢ DS finder can only run on Android and iOS devices.
ā€¢ DS finder supports installing DSM on most Synology NAS models (except rack-mount models and desktop models of FS/XS series).

How to Configure storage space on your Synology NAS with the Storage Manager

This section guides you through the steps of storage pool creation using the built-in package, Storage Manager. When itā€™s your first time launching Storage Manager, Storage Creation Wizard will help you create and configure storage pools and volumes. How and Why to Create a shared folder to start sharing files in DSM 7

Through the setup of a shared folder, you can turn your Synology NAS into a convenient and secure file-sharing center. This section explains the role of shared folders on DSM and gives you instructions on file management using File Station and DS file. Understand shared folders A shared folder is a home directory where you can store and manage files and subfolders. You must have at least one shared folder to store files on your Synology NAS. Data stored in shared folders can be kept private or shared with specific users or groups based on custom permission settings. Some packages or services require a dedicated shared folder to ensure functionality (most will create a folder automatically). Removing any shared folder removes all the data and their snapshots within the folder. If you need the data, please back them up first before the removal.

How to Navigate, Manage and Access Files in the DSM 7 Web-Based GUI

File Station is a built-in file management tool on DSM. File Station provides a centralized interface where you can access and manage files and folders with web browsers and grant other users access to files based on the permissions you set. 1. Just getting ready to replace a Drobo FS with a Synology DS1522+. I had lots of questions regarding initial set up and configuration, and your video covered exactly what I needed to get rolling. Thank you very much for the effort you put into creating this tutorial and walkthrough.

      2. Really nice information but I have a question here.

        1. I recorded a videos on my iPhone and backed up using the Synology Photos app to my DS220J NAS. Now to stream and share do I have to copy these videos every time from my default NAS folder to the Video Station mounted folder. Because this doesn’t make any sense to create copies on my NAS.

        2. Is there any way I can use my all default backed-up photos/videos/audio files using the Synology Photos app to stream on my phone or browser and also share without copying in.

      3. This video is incredibly helpful. The only suggestion I have is to add chapters to help navigate 46 minutes of different backup procedures. Cheers!
EDIT: Spoke too soon. Found time stamps in the description. šŸ™‚

      5. Correction: RAID 2 does not offer 2 disk failure protection. RAID 2 only offers 1 disk failure. It’s purpose is Hamming code protection for data integrity at the block level. Not very common. Special use case when you need bit rot protection.

      7. Thanks for taking the time to record this. While I’m familiar with RAID, etc., (setting up a Synology 1522+, to replace my old Drobo 5N), you answered my biggest question really quick: “Do I need the drive screws?”. I am thinking, since I’m in an RV, that I might should use them anyway, because vibration….but we’ll see. I have the NAS, but the drives are coming slower. šŸ™ And I’ll be using RAID6 with 5x8TB Seagate Ironwolf. RAID6, because, again, in an RV!

      9. Nice video ????
Folks should be aware that an iSCSI target is not shareable to a second client PC initiator, in the sense that most ordinary users would expect. Indeed, getting a second PC to access the same target is an advanced topic involving clustering.

9:15 — GPT vs. MBR . . . GPT is the right recommendation. The reason being is that GuidPT has more functionality and flexibility with drive partitioning schemes. As the (msft windows) world has largely moved on from MBR, only older vintage CPU, ROM and O/S combos are incompatible with GPT. But even today one may select MBR to initialise a drive, whether for storage or boot with a resultant 2TB maximum capacity.

      17. I have to admit that I’ve selected many of your videos to get a better understanding of my synology DS918+ and what it’s capabilities are. Although I feel that sometimes you’re talking a bit too fast to follow along, I can always replay certain portions on the video which I couldn’t fully understand. Now, you’ve made videos covering both Synology and QNAP NAS’s; so it would be more helpful if you could also include the differences between Windows and MAC OS when doing a how to video of this type.
I can’t follow you when you’re selecting certain functions on your Windows PC which Mac doesn’t have.

Just a window that tells me that i dont have permission, nothing more nothing less. deleting and new installing doesnt help anything….

      20. Hello, during the initial setup, under “Explore other useful tools”, we have the options to check “Around the clock monitoring and protection” and “DSM configuration backup”. Is it a good idea to check both?

I plan to use a Samsung SSD not in the compatibility list. I am concerned that if I enable these options, DSM will report the hardware log to Synology so that later on when I need support, they may refuse to help and void the warranty.

      21. At fist this seems like a very useful video but as I dig into the backup topic myself I see that two essential topics are missing: a) backup encryption (in case of (backup-) data theft) and b) recovery. Both topics have their own bells and whistles and can be quite challenging. Your help on these topics are very much appreciated.

I am in the midst of moving the contents of my PC to my NAS. Based on what I have been listening to, I think that Synology Drive and Synology Assistant is going to work best for me (at least thus far). Here is my question. When I sync the files from my NAS and then view them via Synology Assistan, I see them listed with the “cloud”. If I “Pin” a copy permanently on my local drive. Where is that files then saved, and can I then access it through my PC’s file explorer?

      34. It is great, if you only want 2 cameras. Outside of that, you’d be many hundreds of times better off financially to use a program like Blue Iris at under $100 for a 64 camera license running on a computer that will cost you under $400.
All the things shown in this video are available on virtually all platforms and honestly there are cheaper, and easier to use, options for the general user by the time you add the cost of the NAS (ridiculously expensive for what you get) and license fees as even the most basic system will end up with more than 2 cameras.
The other thing to remember with Synology is you don’t get human, vehicle or any other smart detection unless you buy cameras that have those features where as several other solutions, that are cheaper, do actually have these features built into the software.
I really would not recommend Surveillance Station for the average home user.

      38. My 2 cents on the video and people’s comments:
1: If running DSM 7.xx I suggest downloading from Synology and using that file. Three attempts with the doing from the Package Installation were a failure. It never made the “Plex xxx xxx xx” shared folder
2: To remove a PLEX installation, it is not complicated, right click on it and select “uninstall” (not sure exactly what it says but you get the point I am not doing a tutorial……and I figured it out myself
3: I would love it to see a video from start to finish with the exact system that I have. But that really is not practical for many people that post things to help us out. If you trying to set up a NAS, you should have at least enough knowledge to handle simple troubleshooting. If you need to be handheld, I do not think a NAS for PLEX is for you.
4: The OP’s vids are very good. I really enjoy them. But I do not rely on them for 100 percent of any solution. When I got my NAS and PLEX setup, I used several references to help me with it.
5: I do wish that NASCompares would respond to the questions asked. I think it is fair that you give answers back to the most common questions asked. I do understand that more complicated or “one offs” would be best dealt with offline
6: Comments like “I’m so tired of people putting setup tutorial videos together where they are working with an already existing environment and their directions don’t line up with someone who is starting out fresh.” sort of bug me.

I get the frustration..I really do. But a weekend of working through a problem makes you smarter. I followed this video and I had problems. But I researched and figured them out. Also, Everyones’ environment is different!

Negatives: I do feel that NASCompares does not really care about answering the most common basic questions. I think you guys make money from it (cool, lots of work you have to do) but you do leave people hanging. You are more of a TV show than a social media platform where ideas are shared and solutions found…which means you are part of those solutions. Shame on NASCompares for not offering help on the questions that pertain to the video that you posted that you make a profit off of.

You started the video, at least support your followers.

      50. DO NOT install the beta. Just do download the Synology (DSM 7) file from Synology and manually install the package… then continue follow the instructions to add permissions to the folder etc… If you want to keep Plex updated, just download a new DSM 7 package from Plex, then manual install again and it will upgrade for you (there is no upgrade option in Synology Package Center but a manual install again will perform an upgrade – I tested and confirm this). You can also delete and keep settings option, and re-install a previous version if you every have a situation where a Plex update breaks something. Also HW acceleration works fine on my DS1520+ and no need to do any edits or docker workarounds… I think Plex has fixed a lot of the issues since these videos came out.

I have 2 external cameras on my home and until a few weeks ago i was utilising the camera software for detections and alerts which was working well. My detections were under IVS for an entry and exit zone. However, I have recently changed my ISP and for some reason I now cannot get email alerts via the camera software so have resorted to using surveillance station (DSM 7) through which alerts do work. But I have found the experience to be completely frustrating. IVS does not work with surveillance station and the function is greyed-out, so I have to resort to using a detection area and setting the sensitivity and threshold controls. But I have found this to be pretty much useless and it will trigger an alert every time the sun goes behind a cloud but won’t detect someone walking down my driveway. I really would like this to work and I record 24/7 to my Synology DS118 which is used solely for this purpose, but the whole experience is one of utter frustration as it seems unable to deliver what I need it to, and to what I was getting previously. Do you have any suggestions?

I’d rather have the entire day, and the ability to track a suspicion vehicle or persons activities throughout the day without dropped recording between the motion events it’s decided are important. 12TB isn’t a small amount, but I don’t want to have issues with a prosecutor or jury accepting my security footage because it has blank spots on the timeline for reasonable doubt.

      80. Getting an API for TMDB is not as straight forward. You must apply for one to which they question your use for it. I simply said for my Synology NAS. If approved, they will email you the code. I successfully applied and their scrapping is very fast and accurate. The only catch is you MUST name your media files in a correct format. Ex: My videoName (year) If you don’t name your file correctly TMDB cannot find it. This also applies to TV shows such as season and episode no. Ex: Sopranos S03E04

A friend had encountered issue with WD 18tb ultra 550 drive which is not working with error health info not available though it shows the available space to be initialized. Based on forum Intel based DS series seems be working with 18tb from both brands of Seagate and WD but none claim on non intel realtek chipset. Even support neither saying incompatible but keep insisting to check the drive by connecting to pc for health info.

      87. Hey, new sub here as I’m in the market for my first NAS and pretty much decided on the Qnap 453 (thanks to your videos) but when I put it into my cart Amazon “suggested” I look at the 473. This product is about $300 more but with that money you get the Ryzen and the max memory is substantially more, so I’m wondering why in all of your comparison videos you don’t compare these two? You typically only compare models that are the same price. But you’re missing out on a key part of your audience who (like me) don’t mind spending a little more as long as you explain the benefit of it; so many people choose a budget that tops out at $1k so maybe you could explain the advantages of spending just a little more money to step up to the much more expandable 473?

      89. Please also make a video for Kodi integration. For now, I don’t want to pay for Plex. BTW, I’m having problems with Video Station not automatically scraping info. I had to manually go to each video file and edit/correct the info. When I tried to refresh, it did refresh the list of files/folders but didn’t scrape the info, meaning I lost a lot of the effort I did with manual scraping. Does the Video Station need a certain folder structure for the files?

Also, am I able to exclude certain sub-folders? For example, Featurettes, Extras, etc?

      90. Given 4 drives present, I would use SHR2 or raid 6 over SHR or raid 5 and leaving the 4th drive idle as a hot spareā€¦ Using the hot spare and 1 drive redundancy leaves you open to data loss if failure occurs before the spare comes live. It can take a long time to rebuild an array. Having a second drive failure protection in place with SHR2 is a huge comfort and reduces the pucker factor while waiting for an array to rebuild. When your drives are a few years old, you will lose one and be hoping that the remaining old drives donā€™t crap out during the rebuild!

      92. does this series stop at 4? the play list is confusing me; looks like 1,2,3,4,4,3,2? Id assume placeholders but that seems odd to me that a placeholder is needed and you cant just keep adding.

Sidebar and pardon if i just havent gotten there yet;; when do you discuss PLEX? or HomeAssistant? How do i keep my system safe for doing something like remote access (plex, home assistant, etc) and mapping network drives (local PC access) but also keeping things secure like with 2FA? Do i need completely separate volumes and just host the stuff i care less about (plex / remote access to basic files, ie homework or whatever) on its own volume and then everything i want extra secure (taxes?) in a different volume that cant be network mapped etc? If those are the two options, how do people host home automation servers and have remote access but keep them secure to themselves but also isolated to the rest of the network (particularly the drives of tax info or whatever)..

Long winded question, sorry, im not sure how to ask but basically want to do plex and have some stuff available, have other things super secure, then also want home automation (home assistant) setup hopefully with remote access, and also possibly a security camera system (sort of crosses over with home automation).

      95. Thank you very much for your useful video. I have a problem and I hope you could give me instructions and advice.
I have Synology Drive on my computer, which uses a 480GB SSD. There is a SynologyDrive in the Local disk D. The data I store in the SynologyDrive is synced to my DS220J Synology NAS. Unfortunately, the total capacity of Local disk D is just 175GB, which is quite limited compared to the amount of data I need to store in my NAS. I do “free up space” some folders in the SynologyDrive on my computer but I still don’t have enough memory for my data.
What should I do to upload 1TB of my data to my NAS without facing the limited amount of memory (175GB) of the SynologyDrive on my local disk D?
Thank you very much for your help.

Question: Iā€™m planning to order another 2 NVMe cards of 1 TB each – this time the 4th PCIe Generation – is it worth it and will make it a difference to the overall performance of the NAS unit ?

Additional information: running 32 GB RAM on it with 2 x 12 TB HDD and another 4 x 3 TB HDD – planning to configure it as a RAID 10.
Mostly video editing / video content creation & photography to perform & storage on it.

      97. I’m so confused with all this networking stuff right now and NAS lol. ( do video editing and render farms)
So Ive been told that a mechanical drive is too slow and would bottleneck on a 10gbs network. I mentioned isnt that what the RAM, CPU and SSD caching is for? To bring the speed up over 200-300 mb transfer? Supposedly a usb2.0 on SSD would be be fast enough, but based on my editing experience I would disagree as it always lagged and files are unscrubbable with a 4k 60fps footage. If a 10gbs is required for NAS video editing workflow, then doesnt that mean the data we’re transfering should be equally or close to being that high as well? Is there more to it than the actual transfer speed that I am not understanding? How much data are we transfering or required to transfer when editing sometthing like a 4k60fps? Do you have a deep explanation for these?

      98. While i absolutely love my Synology NAS, i cannot believe how stupid the head honchos at Synology are.
They had a great feature for their Moments app in DSM 6 which found duplicate and similar photos enabling you to delete them.
Surely plenty of photographers, pro and amateur, found this feature useful, i know i did, and thought it was awesome.
Fast forward to DSM 7, and someone, who can only be described as an out of touch fool, decided NOT to add that same feature to the new Synology Photos app. It’s not like it was a feature that needed to be developed, that work was already done, so why would said fool not add it to the new version of a photos app.
This is what really gets up my nose about any new update OS be it Windows, Mac Synology etc, some moron gets to decide what i want and don’t want without asking me.

I also tried the shared option, but that collects all my photos on a photos share and not give me an option to select the sub directory that I want Photos to read. again is there a way or do i have to move split my shares so I can hide originals for example?

I have also found out that deleting photos from Synology Photos also delete them from my NAS – all recovered hough

Thank you very much for these videos – i find them really helpful

      103. Hi Robbie and thank you for the video. I’m considering either a QNAP or Synology and I’ve been going though many of your videos lately to make that decision, its been very helpful! It’s mainly just for home use, a lot of it is around keeping our photos safe… also plex and would like to play around with some VM’s just for the fun of it. While I’m happy to see this guide on photos I’m a bit confused to understand how photo setup would work for multiple users – how would this look from their point of view and how to set this up properly? How to make auto-uploads from phones for each user, etc.?

I would like to have my personal account and an account for my wife to share the vast majority of our photos between us pretty much automagically if possible (our kids may need similar accounts as well in a not so distant future). On the contrary, I have a friend who has shown interest in using my “future” NAS for his own back ups to a limited capacity… would I be able to grant him a completely isolated space (around 1TB) so that he can also use photos for himself? Would I need to explain to him how to set up a photos folder in his space?

I would highly appreciate a multi user setup video if you have the time for one. The required “photos” folder location is a bit confusing for Synology so I’m leaning towards QNAP at this point.

        Cheers!

      118. Unfortunately this is supposed to be for beginners how to setup a Synology DSM 7 now but your missing important features if you don’t have checksum enabled on the share you can’t enabled it afterwards (it disables auto repair) also for beginners SHR should be used due to its flexibility (you can’t change between SHR and raid5) disks at 8tb or higher recommended to use SHR2 and a 5 or higher Bay nas (so you still have 3 disks worth of space)

        Recycle bin enabled

Snapshot Replication should be (amazes me you have to actually install it) and set it up 30 days retention (or more if needed) and set monthly smart extended scan and monthly data scrub schedules set

If you’re thinking about using a hot spare with SHR or Raid 5 don’t, you should pick shr-2 first or RAID6 before you even consider using hotspare (as your constantly protected protected from 1 or 2 disk failure, with SHR1 once you lose a disk you lose redundancy the hot spare doesn’t protect you until it has finished rebuilding, or you might actually automate your pool death when)

      119. Hi, I really appreciated the pace. I’m hoping you can post a video to expand on drive mappings. It would be helpful to address the issues one can come across when the NAS is in a VLAN with specific ACLs, Although I’m in the same domain, I can’t map a drive and I suspect it has to do with network security and the fact that I’m in a separate VLAN. I also “loaned” out two of my drive bays on the NAS to a hospital and they are not even in the same domain, but I want them to map a drive through Windows Explorer as well. Thank you!

      124. Read and write is not improved in RAID 1. It’s too bad you keep saying this in so many of your video’s. Explenation: a 1GB file needs to be written to a RAID 1 setup. The 1GB of data will be written to both drives at the same time, turning it from a 1GB data transfer to a 2GB transfer on that final stretch of the pipeline. The data is there 2 times now. The read and write performance is therefore theoretically limited to the slowest disk speed of the two.

      126. You can also remap your essential folders such as my documents and my music by clicking on the icon and select properties. Use the tab for location and in the data string, move your on system files to the NAS Drive. Just remember to recreate the disk structure/path naming formalities, if you care about such things. For instance I use \[Synology drive name]pathfolderMy Documents.
Because I have several computers that I use, I find it easier for me to have my folders on my Nas, than to have individual folders on each pc
For me, this works. It means that I can access all my files even on my laptop, in another country.
Downside is that if I lost my laptop, they can access my stuff too but that is another issue

Current NAS is Western Digital 4 Bay PR4100 with WD Red Drives Set up Jbod (4 Volumes). Thinking about getting Synology or QNAP 10GB not sure which one yet with Iron Wolf Pro drives, but do not want to RAID, want single Volumes like I currently have. 129. I did it differently and added two drives for 12TB of storage, as separate individual volumes. Backup is to external USB 5TB drives using DiskBoss Ultimate, which mirrors the NAS drives to the USB ones and error checks them. The USB drives to cover the 12TB worked out half the price too.
