New Synology NAS for First Half of 2025 Revealed – DS925+, DS1825XS+, DS625Slim, DS1525+ and More
UPDATE 3rd May 2025:
The Synology DS925+ NAS is Now Released, and I have made a YouTube Video Review here, and a written DS925+ NAS here |
ORIGINAL ARTICLE BELOW:
After what seems like quite a while for many, we have finally got pretty large confirmation that Synology are refreshing a large number of their Desktop (and a couple of Rackmount systems) devices – as well as launching a few new storage media options. This new information arrives via ChipHell user ‘nineeast‘ in a recent forum post. I am still in the process of identifying the event that the photo below was taken from, but given the preponderance of people taking photos, it won’t be long before this spreads further. This is of course the potential that this is a hoax… but (as you will see later in the article) the chiphell post is not the only source. Nevertheless, it looks like Synology are getting set to refresh a huge number of solutions, launching their DS925+, DS425+, DS225+, DS1525+, DS1825+, DS725+, DS625slim, DS1825xs+ and RS2825RP+ between now and Summer 2025. So, let’s discuss what these refreshed devices bring and whether they deserve your data.
*Update* In order to better track each of the new Synology NAS revealed at this event, I have made update pages for each device below. Additionally, as mentioned in the video, I am canvassing user feedback on these new releases (ideally existing Synology NAS users and/or SIs – system integrators) for a follow up video soon. put your feedback in the comments below or in the Reddit thread HERE

Which Synology Solutions were Revealed at the Synology Event?
The big deal here is that it is tremendously rare for Synology to reveal their roadmap of solutions, let alow share it with users in such a detailed fashion. Synology have always been tremendously restrained when it comes to revealing their product refreshes (and new product lines). That said, refreshes of products in their portfolio periodically is pretty normal, and most Synology solutions will see a refresh every 2.5-5years (depending on the product tier, with XS series devices generally having a longer refresh cycle), and many have been wondering about when a refresh to the x22/23 range of devices would arrive, and in what form it would take. The TLDR list of solutions shown were:
DESKTOP SOLUTIONS | RACKMOUNT SOLUTIONS | EXPANSIONS | MEDIA |
DS1825+ – AMD V1500B, 2.5GbE ×2
DS1525+ – AMD V1500B, 2.5GbE ×2 DS925+ – AMD V1500B, 2.5GbE ×2 DS725+ – AMD R1600, 2.5GbE ×1 DS625slim – Intel J4125, 2.5GbE ×1 DS425+ – Intel J4125, 2.5GbE ×1 DS225+ – Intel J4125, 2.5GbE ×1 DS1825xs+ – AMD V1780B, 2.5GbE, 10GbE + OOB |
RS2825RP+ – AMD V1780B, 10GbE | RX1225RP – Suitable for certain RS series devices
DX525 – Suitable for certain DS series devices |
SNV5420 Series – M.2 2280 NVMe
SAT5221 Series – 2.5” SATA SSD HAT5310-12T/16T – 3.5” SATA HDD HAT5310-4T/8T – 3.5” SATA HDD HAT3320-8T – 3.5” SATA HDD |
The biggest takeaway in these shared images seems to be that the bulk of the solutions in this 2025 year refresh are going to remain largely the same, but with two main changes across the board.
Credit to nineeast on Chiphell forum
Thise changes are 1GbE network interfaces will be upgraded to 2.5GbE interfaces universally, and expansion devices that would have previously used eSATA as a means of connectivity will now be USB-C (as well as a reshuffle of the CPUs in the product tiers/families around), but we will get onto that latter point in a moment. Further information and images have also been shared by user ‘ERROR204‘ on imnks, another storage *& network related forum, as well as bringing further information on the expansion devices. The DS1525+, DS925+ and DS725+ will serve as refreshes of the DS923+, DS723+ and DS1522+ NAS. It’s unclear whether they will be using that mini PCIe upgrade card like the existing series (the E10G20-T1-MINI) as the slide below indicates that they will not, but the DS925+ and DS1525+ will see the R1600 Dual Core / 4 Thread Ryzen processor in their predecessor replaced with the v1500B 4 Core / 8 Thread CPU (previously used in the 6/8/12 Bay desktop NAS devices. The DS725+ however will remain as the R1600, but will see the 1GbE NICs upgraded to 2.5GbE.
Credit to ERROR204 on imnks.com
Interestingly, the default memory on the DS725+ will increase to 4GB of ECC Memory (as opposed to the 2GB in the DS723+ predecessor). However the slide below also indicates that it will no longer support the mini PCIe 10GbE adapter. So it’s a mixed bag in the DS725+ refresh really. This slide also indicates that the USB-C connected expansion will seemingly remain at 6Gb/s transfer speeds – which is a little odd, given USB 3.2 Gen 1 is 5Gb/s and USB 3.2 Gen 2 is 10Gb/s – something to ponder.

Next is the ‘media’ series of devices and also a return of the Synology SLIM series. The DS625slim arrives (refreshing the DS620slim from 2020) and the DS425+ and DS225+ arrive as refreshes for the comparatively (for Synology’s MO) new DS224+ and DS423+ NAS. These will be continuing to use the existing Intel J4125 Quad Core Celeron CPU from 2019/2020 (something I know will not please everyone), but will also see upgrades to 2.5GbE from the 1GbE on their predecessors. Additioanlly, I think we can assume the DS425+ will have the 2x M.2 NVMe slots of it’s predecessor.
Credit to ERROR204 on imnks.com
Now the DS925+ (a refresh of the DS923+) has the upgrade from the R1600 CPU to the V1500B CPU we mentioned earlier, alongside the new USB-C expansion support (the DX525) and 2.5GbE NICs, so I think we can assume the DS1525+ will be similarly reprofiled from the DS1522+, but I am unsure if it will have 2x USB-C ports instead of 2x eSATA (almost certainly, but not 100%). I think many user are going to have mixed feelings once again about the CPU choices present here in the bulk of these new refreshes.
Credit to ERROR204 on imnks.com
Now onto those two 8 Bay devices, the DS1825+ and DS1825xs+ (serving as refreshes of the DS1821+ and DS1823xs+ respectively). As covered in my video in 2024 about previously leaked information on the DS1825+, it seems that both of these devices will have the same CPU as their predecessor devices, but will see upgrades from their 1GbE ports towards 2.5GbE (with the DS1825xs+ maintaining it’s 10GbE copper connection). All other specifications (M.2 slots, expandability, memory, etc) will all seemingly remain the same – though I think we can once again assume that expansion ports will be USB-C in line with the DX525 box.
For many, it will be a little disappointing that we did not see a 6-Bay model arrive and in fact there has not actually been a 6-Bay Synology NAS since 2020 (when the DS1621+ and DS1621xs+ were launched), increasing fears that Synology are eliminating that tier of their portfolio. However, there is ZERO confirmation on this and the 6 Bay option in the Synology store is still present for the DS1621+ and DS620slim, though the DS1621xs+ has disappeared (likely replaced internally with the 8 bay XS option).
Finally, there is the storage media that was listed. Some drives we already knew about. For example, the SAT5221 Series of SATA SSDs already appeared on vietcorp (HERE), but the HAT3320 is seemingly a refresh/new line in the Synology Plus series of hard drives – and there have been rumours circling for a while that these would be Seagate Ironwolf drives, but currently unconfirmed.
Finally, there is the Synology SNV5420 series – a new M.2 NVMe media drive range, but it is currently unclear if this is a complete refresh of the SNV3400/SNV3410, or as the naming convention seems to indicate, a higher performance/class of M.2 NVMe SSDs. This is something that has been LONG DEMANDED as Synology still have a solid insistence on their systems/add-on cards with M.2 NVMe Support HAVE TO be their own media drives if you want to use the slots of Storage pools, yet the SNV3400 range and it’s variations are comparatively low speed and high priced vs the rest of the M.2 NVMe SSD market as a whole.
So, that’s everything we know so far. Let’s now discuss what we think together in the comments!
The New Synology 2025 Product Line Up – What I Like and What I Don’t!
I have mixed feelings about the entire Synology refreshed line up – on the one hand I DO think there is a meaningful refresh here on the DS925+ and DS1525+ NAS. No one was expecting Synology to completely change this product family, as they have already made it pretty clear that these two system profiles are designed now more for the SMB user, small business, container deployer and those with file processing needs – i.e not multimedia as the focus. So, them upgrading this from the R1000 CPU in the x23 series to a V1000 CPU (doubling the cores and threads) will be tremendously welcome – as will 2.5GbE out the box (though I would like more clarification on the E10G22-T1-MINI 10GbE upgrade card support – as it looks like this is now not supported and that would be a real shame). Also, as much as its a bummer to see the V1500B CPU that Synology have already had on their products in 2020 in these 4 and 5 Bay solutions, they ARE good follow up CPUs over the R1600 in profile, and still have a length support time with AMD backing them up. All that said, the DS725+ seems pretty hard done by here, in fact the DS425+, DS225+ and DS725+ all seem to essentially be the same NAS, but with the 1GbE NICs swapped out with 2.5GbE. I mean, if the price remains exactly the same as the DS423+, DS224+ and DS723+ (and no other hardware surprises arrive in the form of no NVMe slots, etc), then these are…technically…refreshes. But more like a DS224+II, than a whole new DS225+.
Regarding the Intel Celeron devices, I am a little puzzled more than anything else. 2.5GbE on these is good (even if we overlook the fact that 2.5GbE has been fairly standard on ALL NAS systems in place of 1GbE since 2020 from everyone else), but the J4125 CPU is a CPU that has long since retired by Intel (indeed, Intel Celeron naming itself is long gone in favour of the Alder Lake and Twin Lake N processors). So unlike the strong support afforded to the AMD processors I mentioned above, the J4125 seems a remarkably dated choice right now. Still, better some kind of graphical capable CPU in the line up than none at all. Still, odd choice. As there are a lot of holes in these specifications, it’s tough to make a full list of what is good and bad, plus we have to acknowledge that things CAN change during development. So, I’ll hold off for now with anything concrete on my own thoughts, but again, I would love to chat in the comments here or on YouTube for your own thoughts.
Things we still need confirmation on!
As I just mentioned, there are still a lot of gaps in these specs and till we have the full picture, we can’t judge anything! So, here are the questions I still have about these new refreshes that remain unanswered for now:
- HDD and SSD Compatibility, will it be largely the same as the existing 22/23/24 series devices (i.e largely Synology drives, but a few Seagate/WD/Toshiba drives), or will these new series be the first to arrive with strict Synology-only drive media and/or pre-population?
- How is the USB-C 6Gb/s? Is it an adapter, or a USB-C Port on the old lane internally?
- Where is the 6-Bay?
- Ambiguity at best, complete removal at worst, of the 10GbE upgradability of the 2/4/5 Bay V1500B option NAS’. Is this for real?
- Is the SNV5420 a new high performance M.2 NVMe?
- Why refresh all of these at the same time? Some solutions like the DS1823xs+ or DS224+ are very early in their expected run, so a refresh so soon seems unnecessary. So why now?

I need an advice. I have a DS918+ with 4 x 4TB WD Reds in SHR1. I’m getting short on space, but otherwise I’m very happy with it. I need to do something, and I don’t know what. New DS925+ (with new disks unfortunately) or other model or extra DX517 (I have 5 x 3 TB WD Reds that I can use, 4 from an old DS413 and 1 extra one as an external HD for a PC). I think a DX517 in my case is more sensible, especially because I already added RAM and SSD cache on the DS918+ but I might have missed something so, any advice ?

Maybe Synology should look at developing and licencing their software to run on the Ugreen NAS, that would suit a lot of people

This will all but eliminate use of re-certified enterprise drives. Locally, the cost of a DS925+ with 4x HAT5310 8TB Synology Drives, is 40% more expensive than a DS923+ with 4x re-certified 16TB enterprise grade WD drives (which include a warranty and local support). 40% more expensive with HALF the raw capacity. Nuts.

so if I use the migration method to move my old WD drives to the new 925+ or 1525+ and then one of WD drives fails, then would I have to then use a Synology drive to replace the failed drive? Seems like a weird question to ask but it seems relevant for now

I don’t think Synology understands their user base, it’s not mums and dads buying their products like Apple products. This is not even mid hardware, this is like they’ve gone through someone else’s recycle bin from 2020. The HDD lock in is just taking the piss at that point. It just seems like they are trying to lose customers, considering all the new options starting to surface, especially with the rise of AI. They need to get their head out of their ass and get back in the game.

Hello! I’m looking into getting my first NAS (or DAS) and I’ve already done a fair bit of research, but I still have a lot of questions, more then I can fit in the “Free NAS advice” form on your website. I see that there’s a way to pay for a faster response, but is there a way to get paid advice that would permit a larger/longer set of questions or a back and forth conversation, in addition to or instead of a faster reply?
Thank you!

Wow. 10 year old processor upgrade. No 10Gigbt. And stuck with their shitty drives.

If you just want a NAS and already have Ubiquiti hardware, the UNAS Pro is excellent. Synology releasing a product that doesn’t support 3rd party drivers is unforgivable. All other manufacturers support ALL drives so why not Synology? They’ll be out of business within a year hopefully.

Keep making the Synology reviews with the call out about their HD’s. It will be a good video when Synology changes its mind.

So I’m curious what percentage of Synology’s customer base are home/hobby users? It’s not like these guys started by building enterprise servers. Seems pretty stupid to flip off the consumers using NASs at home. Why not follow so many successful tech companies that have both consumer grade equipment and enterprise grade equipment? This is just like Plex tearing apart our home media player into separate pieces to make our player into an app that merges all of the external streaming services into a single app. Why didn’t they make a new app? What is wrong with these tech companies? I guess I just don’t understand the market. Fair enough. I’m done with Synology. They simply don’t deserve my loyalty. I got none from them.

Not Even graphics gpu , old processor , Disk limitation . How to Connect the expension bay we already have ?? Synology What are you doing ?

What I don’t like is in an emergency, I can’t throw another similar drive that is not official, so I have to buy a couple of extra Synology branded drives for backups even if I have perfectly good ones laying around. Screw this, this is a pain because I do use Surveillance Server…good thing I only bought one extra license. I wish Blue Iris supports ARM so I can build an energy efficient NAS/Cam server.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I think I’m going to keep my current Synology for regular backup for my family member due to its simplicity with its app. But I’ll buy another brand for nas with higher performance with less hardware limitations
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I think they want to ditch consumers, to be honest. This seems calculated. Between this and selecting chips with no iGPU.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Well, NO! As a consumer and a customer, we must send a clear message. Just no. This policies and simply bullshit. The HAT drives are like 50% in price, without adding ANY VALUE at all and they are not available at higher capacties (3.5. i checked and 16TB is the highest capacity – are we a joke to Synology?) Also, as i am also a part of corporate, if we dont stand now, we dont stand ever. So just “SAY NO” and go QNAP or UGREEN, or literally any other brand, just to make them suffer. Nothing else will make them change their mind. We have so many examples in the history of succesful brands making stupid moves and biting the dust. Seems that Synology mightt be another one in the line…

Thanks for your summary review of an actual 925+. I have been planning to upgrade from my old Netgear ReadyNAS units and based on what the older 923+ offered hoped to enter the Synology ecosystem with a more recent model. But the 925+ is a disaster – no 10Gbe upgrade path, drive lockin on HDD’s and NVMe’s – I can’t afford to invest a substantial sum for such a restricted hardware platform when there are other open systems with better hardware and s/w that is almost DSM waiting in the wings. No amount of dangling the possibility of expanding the approved hardware list will convince me to buy Synology now.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
So if I upgrade from my current DS920+ and DX517, can I just swap my drives in the DS920+ to the DS925+ and then use a USB-c to eSATA adapter to use my existing DX517?

Whats the bet Synology are asking HDD and SSD makers to PAY them for “verification”. Its a money grab.

Synology are OTW to garnering a lot of HATE. Remove USB support instead of giving warnings, but allowing people to use it. Destroying DS Video which is looking better and better now that plex have decided to piss off its users, and now the HDD scandal. Removing 10GBe support was idiotic. I do NOT need a new NAS currently – partly as i have 6 of their older ones, but will not be considering them again for a very very long time. Xpenology is looking very intriguing now. I suspect many people will be looking at it a lot more closely. Hopefully Synology ave a Jesus moment and repent. As they have sucker punched those of us who used to rave about them and recommend them to everyone we knew in business. I have nothing but contempt for this company now.

I will wait to see how they add 3rd party HHD’s to the compatibility list, but if it doesnt open up equitably … I AM DONE with Synology and very interested in alternate products.
Synology, wake up and realize this is a bad idea. This isnt some Adobe Ps subscription model where you see dollar signs if you force users to capitulate … unlike Adobe, Synology has multiple equal competition … which means this is just dumb. Back down and call it a mistake, or we will on mass … leave.
The only way it will work, is if Synology drives are up to 20% cheaper than equal Seagate or WD drives. That is really only the way this will work.
… not likely. Synology is showing that they only see its customers as victims of cash sucking.
The software argument is not as user friendly unique, as it used to be. Ya need to look around at your competition.

I have an offsite backup of everything on BackBlaze, but still don’t want to risk going to a backup solution when I have these HDDs … I’m worried about data degredation, so I’m going with paying Synology my $$$ just to get my data.
I will upgrade to Unifi NAS Pro MAX once it comes out and has a stronger CPU more RAM, because I want to put SSDs in that guy to actually take advantage of the 10GbE.

Finally migrated from my old workhorse to a new NAS. Looked at Synology long enough to know that vendor lock-in is an immediate disqualification. I understand that (perhaps) they want to reduce support overhead and troubleshooting complexity by forcing users into standardized drives (conveniently from Synology). But continued lackluster performance and the apparent restriction on after-market hardware is a good way to put yourself out of business.

I have a DS414 with 3x 2TB and 1x 4TB drives. I’ve been wanting to update to a new NAS but waited for 2.5Gb ethernet. Now though, I don’t know what to do. I’d want to use my existing drives but with a clean install. I can’t afford 4x new 4TB Synology drives on top of the NAS unit itself. I only really use the NAS for file storage and Surveillance Station (I have one paid for camera licence I’d need to transfer over somehow). Are there other NAS units from other manufacturers that have the camera surveillance?

who is going to buy this? a 2018 CPU, no 10gbe and locked proprietary drives = ewaste

I didn’t buy the DS925+ PURELY because of the drive compatability issue, even though I wanted the 2.5GB ethernet.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Not so sure the chassis is good for noise.. I just updated last week from a DS416j to a DS923+ (because I didn’t want the 925+, as I use Ironwolf drives) and the noise is considerably higher from the drives, fan noise is fine, but drive noise is probably 6dB louder.

this new machine is 6 years too late.
Forcing the Buyer to buy extremely expensive hardware that is cheaper and better on the market (on top of that from the original manufacturer) makes no sense. It would be fair to take this step back and sell the software in return.

I am Not Even sorry for Synologys downfall. What a joke
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I don’t mind the closed solution in general. But what I mind is that Synology doesn’t manufacture hard drives or ssd‘s, they are simply taking away the transparency and comparability for me. They may start with a quality oem product, but who give me the guaranty that this will stay like this? And where is the advantage for the buyer? I know that my ironwolfes and 990 pro are a good choice at the moment. And if they don’t deliver in future I can see that and change. I can’t do that with Synology branded hard drives or ssd’s. at the same time the competition is catching up with their software. We have several QNAPs in use, I don’t have a problem with it. I am not using their remote access and I deactivate the admin account which comes with the system. If I need remote access I can use a VPN. So for me Synology is no longer on the shortlist
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Bad policy for Synology, compatibility list should be extended to 3rd party. This is not good for anybody annd their reasoning is a load of crap. Imagine if HDD supply chain is suffering, you can’t just pick up another HDD and restore your system.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
They should sell their OS and stop making hardware, and they are well on their way to doing so, we can see that this tin can serves as a showcase for their software, a bit like Linux distributions known for running on Pentium 3.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Wait a second! It is not an upgrade. It’s a downgrade. 2x 2.5 instead of 10 gbe. And usb-c expansion and only branded drives.

What? How?
With 7200rpm HDDs in RAID 0 u get 300mbit (less then that IRL).
You can easily exceed that with SMB multichannel with two 2.5gig nicks
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
So many better solutions today, bye Synology. Same old story though, scrappy tech company has good ethos and hardware/software/prices supporting customers while gaining market share. Within 15 or less years gets overconfident and greedy, hardware/software/support starts to take a back seat to profit and then they lose market share becoming niche, sold off, or die. NEXT!
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
28:13 “more refined compatibility listing” Why use such marketing language? The compatibility has not been “refined”, it has been severely “restricted”. Come on, you are better than this.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
27:41: “Synology needs to be clear about the messaging…” Messaging is not the problem. The anti-consumer policies are the problem. The new hard drive lock in is just the latest in a series of anti-consumer steps. I bought two Synology units before the company went crazy, but will not consider them in the future anymore. Anyone buying an underpowered and overpriced Synology unit today will do it at their own peril. Why wouldn’t Synology continue to remove features for which customers have already paid for like the codecs or USB driver support they removed to save a few pennies on licensing fees?
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
It’s impressive how much Synology does not want my money.

What about migrating a DSM 7.1.1 raid array to the 25+ series NAS?
Many users need to upgrade from DS1813+ to DS1825+ now when the software update support for DSM 7.1.1 ends in a month.

Why are you including Plex Media Server in the DSM apps, when this hardware does not have a CPU that properly supports Plex Media Server?
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
18:03 “But for new users, this is all nothing” (paraphrased). Of course it matters to new users as well, which options they have. New users won’t be able to choose the manufacturer they trust most. They won’t be able to buy the drives that are available in their region, are on sale, etc. They won’t be able to use drivers larger than those Synology supports and the moment the largest Synology drives are not very large. Finally, even new users will be forced to pay the Synology tax on hardware, they could buy from the OEM (Toshiba?!) for less money.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Where is a proper Synology Server, that uses 30w like my ds220. Well the first Synology that is feeling Borring ????. Like minimal ports, no cheap HDD options, limited expansion. NO home user wants to pay 1000s for some photos and movie server. Call me when it is 500$ with drives included????. And i have Synology no plan to upgrade this way.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Well, I have been using Synology for the last 10 years, not anymore, they have stopped in the past, new models with 2.5gbs NICs, where is the full NVMe NAS solution with 10GBs NICs? im not even talking about the CPU.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
The CPU is better than the previous one, but does not support transcoding, which is a big drawback for anyone wanting to use the NAS as a media server. For anyone just wanting reliable storage, there are much more cost effective NAS options available.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
7:44 “2.5 Gbps, an upgrade on this and maintaining that similar price point, is something to be applauded”. No, absolutely not. It is something to not boo at. Removing the 10 Gbps option at the same time, annuls any credit the company might have received for finally not repeating the embarrassing 1 Gbps connections. Call a spade a spade please. Anyhow, with their drive lock in policy, on top of all the other lock in, and Synology removing features and apps from DSM, it does not really matter how much the hardware is (still) behind competitors anymore.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I’ve been a Synology owner for 9 years and have been anxiously awaiting the release of a new 4-bay for a year at least. But recycling the same CPU they’ve been using since the x21 series and blocking DSM install + future upgrades using even high-quality NAS drives like WD Red Pro has left me very disappointed. At the higher capacities Synology-branded hard drives are so much more expensive than WD’s NAS line that Synology drives are no longer a viable option.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
As a home user, not allowing third-party drives is a deal breaker. Choice is the answer. If I choose to take the risk, then it is my choice. I hope they change their mind. I know they make a lot of money on their own branded drives, but it is up to the community to stand up to them and stop buting their hardware.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
There’s a script on github from user 007revad named Synology_HDD_db which is able to add currently installed drives to compatibility list on the fly. It also checks it on every boot in case DSM update overwrites the list. It would be great if you could test the script on DS925+. It won’t allow to initialize the OS, but I wonder if it would allow to create a volume on not officially supported drives.

For years, Synology was a reliable choice for me and many of my customers—simple, intuitive, and stable.
However, over time, Synology’s hardware began to fall behind. Sluggish CPUs, insufficient memory—until the point where I could no longer support virtualization on high-end Synology NAS systems. And these were expensive systems.
Synology continued to release devices with underpowered processors and limited RAM, while also failing to adopt higher ethernet speeds. That’s where they lost me—and my customers.
At first glance, their new hardware seemed promising. But then came the restrictive policies. Synology now requires me to purchase their proprietary disks. Sorry, but I prefer to choose my own.
How do I explain to a customer that, after a system crash, their NAS only accepts Synology-branded disks and refuses others from reputable manufacturers? How do I tell them—while their business is at a standstill—that they must wait three days (example only) for Synology disks before they can resume operations?
The customer will decide for themselves. This leaves me no choice.
Anyway, thanks again for another excellent review.

The fact that they are so anal about not letting you use non tested drives is ridiculous. Just give the user a one time warning on initialization that your disks is not on the certified list and let it be with that. In 99% of the cases there will be no problems.
On another matter .. I have seen several cases of different NAS systems or NAS boards where they Specify a max of eg a 4 disk system 4x 16Tb. Is this just non updated data or is there any problems if buying the newest biggest drives that afaik atm Sata Disks at least go up to 24 TB dependent on brand when your choosing an enterprise drive like eg. EXOS. Is there a hardware or software limit on some NAS OS’es or systems ? I mean why would I buy eg 4 fairly low capacity drives of eg 4-8tb a piece that I will want to update in a year or 2 when I can typically with 4x24gb drives can get a much better tb/money ratio and have around 60 tb with 4 24tb drives in raid 5 that will last me an eternity … or at least very long before I run out of space ????

Synology angered the wrong folk. The IT folk who told small and medium sized enterprises to take a chance on them ten years ago.
None of us will recommend them again after half a decade of software packages falling way behind and causing compliance issues, weak hardware for the faster networks now, the push toward their subscription services, and … the drive thing.
Rebranding someone else’s disk and calling it “compatible” when your compatibility list was behind by years and years wasn’t the correct fix.
Bye Synology. I can build customers far better in a low cost low power server chassis. You WERE the value proposition when you kept software up to date and let us use whatever drives we were willing to use based on customer needs.
We did it because you made a nifty Linux box we didn’t have to faff around with. Now it’s better to build again.

Don’t forget that now it’s not anymore a ~600€ device you can break the biggy bank to buy and put you’re existing drives in and go on as you go. Double that to a 1200€ bare minimum price entrance that will get you ~6TB usable, as you have to buy the drives to go with it. So any “on budget DIYers” that want to slowly adopt the ecosystem are now out of the equation.
Way to go Syno *clap clap clap*

There might be one good reason for the Lockdown of Drives, but Synology needs to communicate it. At the moment there are lot of counterfeit drives around. Drives with 20k + hours are bought cheap and then resetted and sold as “low milage” drives. Those drives issues are falling back on Synology especially when they can’t read out the farm value of Seagates etc. When you buy a certified Seagate drive you are only 10% cheaper then a Synology drive. As example i see right now a certified Ironwolf Pro 12TB for 290€, a Synology 12TB for 310€ and a Seagate Iron Wolf Pro 12TB for 250€ with an “Enterprise” sticker from a Marketplace, which is most likely counterfeit. Thats the only good reason for locking down the HDD, but Synology should communicate it. I am lucky and just bought a DS 1621+ so it won’t bother me for a while.

As usual , thanks for the FANTASTIC video. I am a 1984 Mac Consultant and veteran who has a half dozen Synology clients with MANY 8-bay Plus units from DS1812+ to DS1821+. And I also PERSONALLY have 5 8-bay units at home. Sweetie & I are BEER VLOGGERS and you need big RAIDS to vlog beer [haha]. Anyhow, it is GREAT news that they will let you migrate to a new unit. I personally have two DS1813+ that DESPERATELY need to be migrated. So great to hear I can do that. BUT, what happens is AFTER a DiskStation is migrated to a DS1825+ and a drive fails. Will you still be able to REPLACE a failed drive with a Seagate IronWolf Pro? This is ESSENTIAL to know in advance for proper planning. And also it is REQUIRED in my and my client deployments. ALL of my personal and client deployments have AT LEAST one 22TB or 24TB drive installed. And as we know Synology caps their NON Pro drives at 16TB. So that would mean TOTAL DATA DISASTER if a drive failed in a MIGRATED 2025+ [that has 22TB & 24TB Ironwolf drives]. Can you ask your sources this critical question? Thanks so much! And, as always, thanks for ALL the great videos.

I seriously doubt Synology is making a loss or just breaking even on this hardware. They’ve used the same chassis for years, dropped 10GbE connectivity and replaced 1GbE Ethernet with 2/5GbE Ethernet at an additional cost to them of probably under $10. What you’re paying for, what you’ve always paid for with Synology, is DSM.

It’s always hilarious to me when brands are so sure they’re King and start doing anti-consumer/anti-choice stuff like denying other drives. I get it, there is some argument that they control quality and reduce support costs or whatever. Reality? People care approximately 100x more that they can use whatever drives they want then some marginal promise of better support-ability. Hardware aside (which is just really lacking for a long time compared to competitors), their policy decisions and inability to respond to feedback from the people that pay them will kill the company. I saw you mentioned that you can bring drives across from an older system. Perhaps difficult to test, but it would be interesting to see if you would be able to exchange a failing “non-supported” drive with a replacement “non-supported” drive, or if you’re then forced to use a Synology branded one.
At this stage, if Synology would be interested in selling DSM licenses without their device restrictions, I’d be tempted. I still very much like working with DSM.

Obsolete hardware, locked to their brand hard drives. I’m done. Going to refresh my 2 old Synology NAS to another brand. There are better options out there for hardware. Synology .. you just shot yourself in the foot. The internet doesnt’ forget.

for me, personally, after the whole drive compatibility and locking out and stuff… for new clients or first time buyers: DON’T! There are several options available, so avoid synology as the plague if you value your freedom. No matter the state of the software, you should not be agreeing with the locking (out) polacy. For existing users with either synology drives, or 3rd party ones that are fairly young: if you have to buy, then I guess you have to. Just keep in mind that since they pulled the stunt with the drives now, it’s always a possability they’ll lock out older gens of their drives eventually… They never said they won’t, so…

I’m no longer buying any Synology products, they removed all freedom of using any drive you want, they removed 10gbe, removed igpu’s, removed many first party apps and removed support for third party usb devices like Ethernet adapters
What a terrible way to go.
I’m in the mids of creating my 16 core threadripper unraid server (I might also try truenas before committing to unraid) where I have as much freedom as i want to use any hardware I want.
I also have a ugreen dxp4800 plus which is so much better in terms of hardware

The USB Type C for the DX525 expansion unit seems to be a Thunderbolt port.
It would make sense as it will allow direct access to PCI-ex lanes, and obviously faster than eSATA.
Considering Synology put a screw on the connection cable, they probably want to avoid hot unplugging.

I don’t think there is a competitor to their Photos app , for that reason I plan to just buy their hard drives

It’s a shame watching all these top Nas YouTubers tip toe around the fact that synology is going full anti consumer here. I guess they don’t want to make daddy upset. lol. These videos like this feel more like paid damage control review videos. I mean look at basically every single comment on every video regarding synology in the last few weeks. It’s pretty clear what the general public thinks of this. It’s funny seeing Linus being the only tech personality with an actual backbone to call it for what it really is and not bow to this corporate machine. Imagine Microsoft waking up one day and saying that windows will only support MS branded Hard drives or hardware. No person should support this behaviour.

I just talked to my Synology Rep ,, He Replied the following.
No information on this side it looks like we should have more information on the hardware compatibility list in June!
I then replied I would need to put any New Synology purchases on hold till Synology decides there policies.

Simple as that – ARC loader – Synology unchained working perfect. I hope Linus will do that banned video about Xpenology – they unleashed lawyer dogs on him when he was preparing it. He hates them to the core and promised never ever touch their NASes again.

I’m not buying another turnkey NAS, so it doesn’t impact me. BUT if I was. There is no way in hell I would trust a statement that we are going to expand the compatibility list going forward. Only a complete fool would assume that. No one should buy this garbage. Synology should have delayed this for a generation so they or their vendors could get a more complete compatibility list, with maybe only missing the extreme top tier stuff that may have come out between the final testing and the release of the device.

If I’m wanting to upgrade my Synology 918+ that I use mainly for plex, are there any suggestions as to where I should look. I do utilize transcoding for remote playback so that is something I will need in the new unit.

Corey Doctorow needs more credit for coining the term “enshitification.”
I was willing to pay more for less hardware because the software was so good, but now even that is slowly eroding, and now everything is worse. They are clearly trading their past reputation for temporary profit increases. Synology will never be worthwhile again.
I am heavily invested in the Synology ecosystem, but I will not be buying any other products from them ever again.
3:30 Consumer-grade NAS units should use bigger fans for less noise. People use these things in homes for crying out loud.

This is such a terrible policy. I predict that whenever DSM 7.4 is released in a few months, Synology will backtrack on this entire scheme.

So, my currently equipped exos disks on my 8 bay Synology Nas which are on that compatibility list are now no longer compatible?!? What have Synology done for those older models to get them on the compatibility list? Was that all some show and shuffling of money and no real tests? And why are disks from vendors that say they are for enterprise nasses not automatically approved? As if those vendors don’t know what they are doing (wd red as exemption with their shingled drives). This all feels so wrong on so many levels.

I was going to buy a DS1825+ when it will be released, but I am conflicted. I was going to use Seagate Factory Refurbished harddisk, but since I may not be able to and need to spend ~$155 extra on each harddisk, I am considoring just buying the DS1821+ – The price for using Synology drives will be the whole price of the NAS in extra spend.

My ds1819+ is my last synology. I’m not seeing value in why I would upgrade to newer models. Sybokogy needs to learn it needs to show value for existing people for them to upgrade. 2.5G should have been standard years ago. 10gbit and dedicated nvme. Rack mount still doesn’t have it on the base. Over time I’ve found that I use my synology mostly as a docker host plus basic nas functions. A second hand dell R240 in my opinion beats this hands down.
Show people the new value your devices are providing and you’ll sell more. It’s clear synology are trying to maximize their profits and reduce their costs. Compared to my existing 6 year old unit i get, slightly faster cpu, same power consumption, same noise, less network, same software. Why would i upgrade (I realize I’m not comparing the same products. While I’m interested in what the new DS1825+ I would never buy one.

Good box for SMBs but for home use, no. I was considering this and the DS1525, over the last 5 years, Synology has removed so many options and features since I purchased the DS systems so best I get something else 🙁
Synology appear to be so many years behind everyone else with the hardware. As Synology has stated, they are a business appliance provider.
I just can’t justify the additional cost of Synology branded HDD/SSD/NVMe/Memory.

Great review as always. I appreciate you tried migrating, and that the old pools and volumes mounted and worked in the new hardware. Have you tried removing a single drive from a working pool of non-synology drives, and replacing it with a like “non-synology” branded drive? I’m curious if a drive fails, can we “repair” with another non-branded drive or not. While still not ideal, would give me a little better feeling about migration if I had to do so. Though as a DS923+ user, replacing my existing unit with another DS923+ would make more sense, particularly since I have additional RAM and the 10Gb card for it. Thanks again for your videos and have a great day.

I thought Synology just been greedy and stupid, trying to monopolize SMART in a NAS system, but they just shutdown all 3rd-party drives for the new NAS, this is going full retard at max speed.
But at some degree I understand their decision, the new gen of Chinese NAS brands are rising, there is no hope for Synology in home user market, so it’s best for them to cash in all these years of good rep while it still can.

I’ve had three Synologys over the years and been pretty happy with them overall. I only use them as file servers though. I see a lot of people here saying they will not be buying again. I’m just curious to why. Is it only the harddrive issue or do you guys have other issues with these new models?

Given for how long Synology supports old systems, you’re better off buying a DS923+. You only get a newer CPU on DS925+ but with a ton of drawbacks.
Also I’m hoping for HexOS to pick up fast this niche where people want reliable systems with lots of features but it has to be really simple to use and set up.

I’ll probably catch a 923+ once i can get a cheap one (new or refurbished) since i want to “upgrade” my existing 918+ and 517 solution and i really want to have the 10gbe option and i want to carry on using the old expansion bay. But that’s going to be my last Synology product i guess. When they started to partially lock out other HDD vendors it was already a bitter pill, but they are going way too far. Vendor lock in the business segment is understandable but for home users and prosumers it’s understandably a dealbreaker i’d say. Downgrading a Synology NAS, such as the DS224+, from DSM 7.2.2 to DSM 7.2.1 is not officially supported by Synology, as their policy typically only allows forward updates. However, it is possible to perform an unofficial downgrade using a manual process. This involves resetting the system, manipulating the DSM version file, and installing the desired version. Below are the steps tailored for your DS224+ model, but please note the following:
– **Disclaimer**: This is an unofficial method, not supported by Synology. Proceed at your own risk, as it could lead to data loss, system instability, or bricking your NAS if done incorrectly. Always back up your data first.
– **Prerequisites**: You’ll need a computer with Synology Assistant installed, a terminal application (like PuTTY for Windows or Terminal for macOS), and the DSM 7.2.1 .pat file for the DS224+.
### Steps to Downgrade DSM 7.2.2 to 7.2.1 on DS224+
1. **Backup Your Data**
Before proceeding, back up all data on your DS224+ to an external drive or another device using Hyper Backup or another method. A downgrade can potentially wipe settings or data, so this step is critical.
2. **Download Required Files**
– Go to the Synology Download Center (synology.com/support/download), select “DS224+”, and locate the DSM 7.2.1 full installation file (e.g., `DSM_DS224+_64570.pat`). Avoid incremental update files.
– Also, create a “fake” .pat file: Open a text editor, type a few random characters (e.g., “test”), and save it as `fake_DS224+.pat`.
3. **Enable SSH and Telnet**
– Log in to DSM on your DS224+.
– Go to **Control Panel > Terminal & SNMP**, enable both SSH and Telnet services, and apply the changes.
4. **Reset the NAS to a Migratable State**
– Go to **Control Panel > Update & Restore > Reset**, and select “Reset system configuration” (this keeps your data but wipes settings).
– After the reset, the NAS will restart and enter a “migratable” state.
5. **Locate the NAS with Synology Assistant**
– Open Synology Assistant on your computer and scan for your DS224+. It should appear with a status of “Migratable” and a temporary DHCP IP address.
– Note the IP address displayed.
6. **Trigger an Error with the Fake .pat File**
– In Synology Assistant, right-click the DS224+ and select “Install” or “Update.”
– Choose the fake .pat file (`fake_DS224+.pat`) and start the installation. It will fail at around 4-5%, opening the Telnet port (23). This is intentional.
7. **Access the NAS via Telnet**
– Open a terminal application (e.g., PuTTY on Windows or Terminal on macOS).
– Select Telnet, enter the NAS IP address from Step 5, set the port to 23, and connect.
– Log in with username `root` and password `101-0101`.
8. **Edit the VERSION File**
– Once logged in, type the following command to edit the DSM version file:
“`
vi /etc/VERSION
“`
– Press `i` to enter insert mode, then overwrite the contents with the following (specific to DSM 7.2.1 for DS224+):
“`
majorversion=”7″
minorversion=”2″
productversion=”7.2.1″
buildphase=”GM”
buildnumber=”64570″
smallfixnumber=”0″
builddate=”2023/06/01″
buildtime=”00:00:00″
“`
– Press `Esc`, then type `:wq` and press Enter to save and exit.
9. **Install DSM 7.2.1**
– Return to Synology Assistant, locate the NAS again (it may still show as migratable), and select “Install” or “Update.”
– This time, choose the real DSM 7.2.1 .pat file (`DSM_DS224+_64570.pat`) you downloaded in Step 2.
– Proceed with the installation. The NAS will reboot once complete.
10. **Verify and Restore**
– After rebooting, log in to DSM via your browser using the NAS IP. It should now run DSM 7.2.1.
– Restore your data and settings from the backup if needed.
### Important Notes
– **Data Risk**: While this method aims to preserve data, there’s no guarantee. If the storage pool or volumes are incompatible due to changes between versions, you may need to recreate them, losing data.
– **Post-Downgrade Issues**: Some packages or settings from 7.2.2 may not work on 7.2.1 and might require reinstallation or repair via Package Center.
– **Official Alternative**: If this process fails or seems too risky, consider contacting Synology Support for guidance, though they may recommend a fresh install of 7.2.1, which wipes everything.
If you encounter errors (e.g., “file corrupt” or “cannot initialize disks”), double-check the .pat file integrity (use a checksum if available) and ensure you’re using the correct DS224+ version. Let me know if you need further assistance!
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Please don’t recommend Synology NAS anymore after they kill their customer by DSM 7.2.2.

If they’d bothered to ask the consumers, they’d realize we want a 10GBE option and good hardware transcoding with 5 storage bays, USB-C 10BGPS expansion and a wider selection of compatible drives. But nooo let’s do the opposite.

TBH I expect a NAS in 2025 to be capable of idling down to 1 or 2 watts of power consumption. Every 100w of draw = $166/yr. This rating is rarely talked about.

Well this has cemented in my mind that Synology is no longer the place for running homeassistant VM and docker, its been very good to have it all in one place up until now but as the owner of a DS920+ I have been waiting for a Quicksync capable device, 10gb lan (or upgradeable) and a decent CPU bump to make it work for my needs. It looks like besides a CPU upgrade its not really what I was hoping for so I think it will be a case of investing in a miniPC server which is what I plan to do now. For storage, and for me its no longer worth paying a premium for Synology and their compatibility red tape for just files storage and whilst I love DSM there its time to consider other options.

I’ve been considering picking up a UNAS Pro and this announcement has pretty much solidified my decision.
I’m looking for something that can handle storage and serve video which the DS1825+ just isn’t going to be suitable for with the same ancient potato-tier CPU as the DS1821+.
At half the price of the DS1825+ I can buy a UNAS Pro and a Raspberry Pi to handle the video aspect in a much more competent manner.
I’m currently on a 920+. Was hoping to upgrade it this year but the fact there’s no integrated graphics will be a step back for me as I often stream Emby away from home and the transcoding is already slow enough, unless the CPU in these new boxes manages to be faster than the integrated graphics it’s a hard no from me. Maybe if they support more than 8GB of RAM I could be tempted but looks like I’m skipping another generation

If this is accurate (and I only say if because Synology haven’t officially announced it to us yet, but those photos seem legit), that’s embarrassing. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I really need a NAS, and because of your videos I came to the conclusion that Synology is the best choice both in general and specifically for certain parts of my use case. I was fully prepared to pull the trigger on the DS1825+, but not with that hardware. At this point, I’ll just get some more powerful solution, and just deal with the wacky software.
I was expecting they’d refresh with one of the new CPUs that has an NPU (so they can advertise it as “AI”, but it’d at least be way faster than a 2016 AMD cpu, even moreso with facial recognition in the photos app), and I would’ve really loved to see thunderbolt support (for faster temporary connections to your laptop).

What a waste of an opportunity for Synology! Who, in their right mind, would upgrade from a DS923+ to a DS925+. You lose the 10GBe and get the same level of performance. If they made a leap to current edge technology with 10GBe built in, I would upgrade. Also, they should be including Thunderbolt 5 support. USBC, really? Synology needs to be bought out, reworked, and made relevant as a new technology provider. This is just silly! Time to fire the R&D department.

Now I’ll stick a stick in an anthill. I noticed that everyone is writing about hardware and no one is mentioning software. From a home user perspective, I would like to use NAS for video monitoring and be able to watch events while being in another country if necessary. Using the 5g network on my phone. At home, I have a weak 60/30 Mbps connection. Qnap has weak mobile applications. And apart from Synology, I haven’t found anyone who has it better. 2.5 GBit is too much for me. For me, an optimized, reliable, secure system out of the box is important. Those looking for 10Gbit, build your own machines. Because what else would I use it for? I have knowledge about trunas, omv, etc. but I don’t have time to play around. It has to work and be reliable. Synology has that.
Wake up. It is 2025.
So they took away the 10 gb option for a built in 2.5? No thank you, Id rather and did buy the 10 gb adapter card and am pretty much future proof there albeit with extra $$ up front

Only 1 expansion unit on the 1525+? That’s a bit of a downgrade. Why didn’t synology just put in a 10gbps usb-c controller and 2 usb-c ports, that way not a downgrade to expandability and an upgrade to connection type.

Could you make a video about a Synology NAS + Mac mini solution as a home server? Since the performance of these synology systems seems to never increase, I thought it would be a good combo, using the Mac for all processor intensive tasks and the synology mainly for storage. I am getting annoyed with plex on my DS720+ and thought an upgrade would help, but after seeing the specs of the new gen, it does not seem worth it. There are few articles about this kind of setup online.

Synology has let us down again! Here are two key reasons:
1. No 10Gb networking installed
2. No integrated graphics
Why continue using outdated technology? At the very least, give consumers the option to buy truly high-end features. What do you all think? Would you pay more for top shelf?

It is completely beyond me how people still spend their hard earned money on Synology garbage NAS’s (1GB NICs, 2/4GB RAM, deficient CPUs, lack of PCIe expansion etc). Then to make matters worst they pour salt in the wound with restrictions on which RAM & HDDs you can install unless of course you spend extra money unnecessarily for the Synology branded options. They even restrict you from using NVME drives as storage drives unless they’re Synology branded smdh.
I guess the only purpose Synology serves is to somewhat keep QNAP on their toes.

I wonder if anyone from Synology reads threads like this. I would think they would expect excitement over the release of several new products. But instead it is overwhelming disappointment. At the time of this writing, there are 260 comments and I have seen only a small handful of positive thoughts sprinkled in. And even those are really just in defense of using older CPUs; I don’t see ANY that are truly excited.

I just bought a 224+ last week. Ugh. Figures for my first step into this world and I am upgrading my house to 2.5g

I am so happy I didnt wait so many years for “new” Syno models and bought several much better NAS devices for lower prices much earlier – running now couple of months/years like a charm with much better specs.
RIP Synology although I was using only your products in previous 15+ years. New models simply have nothing to offer today and with their very high prices policy and nonsense like detecting overpriced drives which are only nicely labeled but inside they are the same as other mainstream producted in same factory… a big joke.
Also the massively repeated DSM software benefits are no longer valid as we can see pretty robust solutions using other vendors working months/years now 24/7 without single issue in total of tens of PBs solutions. Here I would mention another big nonsense with volume limitations we can see only in Synology software. Joking or sad nobody reviewed the limitations raised back in 2015 and not needed anymore?
Thanks Synology for your revolution started with NAS around 15y ago, but at least last 5 years you are not worth a penny with your nonsense policy, very high prices, numerous limitations, zero support and lack of so demanded basic functions your products are still missing although reported by many for many years.
Very bad and Synology better quit at least SOHO rather than releasing such joking products. It is 2025. Wake up finally or sleep forever. Bye.
Thanks NASCompares for interesting post and now I am happy going to buy several more NAS from different vendor, having great feeling I did correct in past and found better way, completely giving up with Synology.
My 1019+ with 16G RAM, 2.5G adapter and HW transcoding with a lifetime Plex pass gives me no reason to upgrade. I’ve sold my surveillance station licences and deleted the app. I will not be handcuffed to Synology only HDD’s and continually see apps and functionality being removed. This is my last Synology Box

I’m on a 918+ wanting to upgrade and this is beyond disappointing. I’m very interested in the that mini pc Nas I saw a few videos on. At least I can say the 918+ has been sold for years but, synology seems to be stuck in the apple ???? mentality. Seems they think they can sell the same thing every year and everyone continues to buy. I guess it’s definitely time to move on!

I have a ds414play and have been considering upgrading. Based on the underwhelming hardware described in this video, why shouldn’t I just buy a Mac Mini with Thunderbolt 5? It seems you have to really really like DSM software to stay with Synology.

My DS1817+ died in November 2023 and, thinking that a replacement for the DS1821+ was due out anytime I’ve been waiting ever since. I’m just glad that the DS1825+ is coming out and that I’ll get the full software support for 10 years (?) rather than going for a DS1821+ with 6 (?) years of support? I’m fairly certain that my DS1817+ has a motherboard that has failed and I’m just hoping that the disks are okay!!!

I think Synology’s increasingly restrictive compatibility requirements on RAM, NVMEs and HDDs are becoming a deal breaker. In particular their requirement to use synology brand RAM and NVMEs make their use prohibitively expensive – difficult to justify in price performance terms. Forcing people to use Synology branded HDDs restricts upgrade and modernisation paths. These policies are short sighted.

My rs2821+ will be my last Synology. Using unraid now. But thanks to synology it really helped me when i was still starting.

Honest question from a NAS beginer that I’ve been waiting for a new Synology NAS: I read all the dissapointed on the comments, and people name Ungreen and others but what about THE SOFTWARE!!! the real value of the Synology is the software, my fear of go to Ungreen is being hacked due the software.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I was vainly hoping for a decent intel based media server NAS somewhere in the Synology line-up that would supersede my 920+ but last month I gave up and built my own set-up and switched over to TrueNAS Scale – fair to say there was a steep learning curve but now I have a much much better system for my media. I keep a 224+ for work files and that’s adequate for basic storage. Overall the Synology refresh is just a bit “meh”.

well… ether a year or two old use model from them or building/ugreen. i knew covid would have a many year knock on affects for parts.. but show how little overall og stock there was on parts.

What an absolute joke! Synology is clueless. The only good thing about these 2025 models is that they will make the current models cheaper! I absolutely will NOT be buying any of these new models. Seriously, 98% of these specs are the same… and the lack of PCIe and or 10GbE standard on most of the :refresh” is an insult to 2025 buyers. Complete middle finger to consumers and it’s existing customer base! Seriously, just buy a two bay unit for the software and call it a day!
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
If it is their response to the numerous successful NASes released recently, then they will loose a lot of customers.
I personally wanted to migrate my home NAS from 2-bay to 4-6 bays. I waited till their release because I love the software. But it does not make any sense. Old, slow and ineffective CPUs, memory limitations, Ethernet limitations, no integrated GPU on most models. These devices are obsolete even before release.

Do not spend your time:
Highlight- Synology decided to use 2.5g nic in 2025, that’s the whole upgrade. (Feel free to close).
Everything else is negligible and not even an upgrade if you had a model above average before.
PS: never heard of most disappointing upgrade in life

And still no Rackstations? I’m waiting for a successor of the RS1619xs+, which is a very very old model (> 5 years).
All the Synology fans who kept telling us, okay, the hardware sucks, but their OS is worth the price. Do you still agree?
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
The fact that they still have enough of that Celeron J4125 (a 2019 proccessor that is EoL) on-hand to build an entire new 2025 model (who knows when that will see EoL since it’s not like they upgrade annually) should tell you all you need to know about this companies foresight. 2.5GBe is their big leap forward in connectivity standards? Most have moved on to 5GBe or even 10GBe by now and ol’ Synology out here dipping a toe in the 2.5GBe waters in 2025. Wow. Rocking my DS920+ for the foreseeable future and then I’ll be doing anything but Synology for the next NAS.
To think that I used to complain when Synology had poor rack offerings. If only that were still the issue in 2025. For others reading, Ubiquiti released a NAS last year called the UNAS Pro that’s a 2u rack-mountable chassis, 10GBe networking, redundant powering options and 7-drive bays for a retail price of $499. And that’s from one of the more notorious names in over-charging for tech, mind you. If you want real business-class data storage there’s far better options now and for the foreseeable future from the looks of things.
In terms of pro-sumer and enthusiasts (who Synology seems to hate now even though they wouldn’t exist w/o them), it wouldn’t take much for Ubiquiti to add an integrated graphics CPU, expandable RAM and application/docker support to that UNAS Pro to release an upgraded UNAS called the MAX Pro XCG LMNOP (or whatever) for probably $699. RIP Synology. I would say it’s been a good run but I don’t feel like lying.
Thanks again for another great video and doing all of the legwork on this video though so the rest of us don’t have to endure the brain damage only to find out it’s another dud of a year. You helped me a lot with my NAS choice years ago and I’ll be watching closely over the coming months/years to see what other offerings become viable as their software matures.

REPLY ON YOUTUBE
No DS925+ with intel ?

No GPU again – dogshit
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
I’ll take an unpopular stance. Unless they restrict the new units to Synology only drives (which may be a showstopper as I won’t be able to just transfer my current disk array into the new unit) I’ll likely be upgrading my trusty DS1512+ to the DS1525+. For me Synology gives the rock solid reliability in hardware and software that I need. The 2.5Gb ports will be welcome, but I won’t need 10Gb anytime soon. The new processor will also be sufficient for my needs for quite a while. The additional memory will be great as will nvme caching.
Clearly I’m not a power user, but there are probably more people and businesses like me out there than there are power users who might need the latest and greatest. Not everybody needs or wants a Lamborghini when an ultra reliable Toyota will do them just fine.

While I agree with the sentiments expressed here over the lack of hardware updates from Synology, it’s important to remember that what makes a good NAS is it’s software. Hardware is easy, software is hard. The thing I like about my pair of Synology NAS’s is DSM. Things just work. No fuss, no tinkering, no intermittent failures or erratic behaviour.
Most home users really do not require 10GbE or faster CPU’s etc. They’re nice to have but for the majority of home users, I think the hardware, though dated, is sufficient for their use case.
My biggest concern about moving away from DSM is the quality of the OS being used. For example, I don’t know if UGreen, Terramaster or QNAP offer a Synology Drive equivalent, and if they do, if it’s as dependable and easy to configure.
For me, it’s the OS that is the prime factor for a NAS and the hardware a secondary consideration. You can have decent functionality with an excellent OS running on slower hardware, but poor software on the best hardware is next to useless.
Sure, I don’t like the way Synology has gone with regards hard drives etc, and I’m not saying I’d stay with Synology forever. I’m just concerned over the quality of the software of other solutions.
REPLY ON YOUTUBE
Excellent news, Synology well done ????
You could have gone all the way, with state of the art new Ryzens, and Intel N series. Forcing your customers to upgrade… but your being eco friendly, using that warehouse of CPUs you over purchased in 2019!
You’ve just saved me about £3000..

I would 1000% jump ship to another NAS platform with better hardware, if it wasn’t for the free Active Backup for Business license we get with Synology NAS. The other software solutions that I found are just too expensive for personal use. This could be a good video to cover if you were able to compare other bare bones backup software solutions (hopefully with de-duplication) in comparison to active backup for business.

Once UGREEN figures out their OS, it’s basically game over for Synology. That’s saying a lot since it’ll take a long time for them to figure that out, but man does their hardware just smoke synology’s 2019 processor bullshit with a premium price tag.

For the expansion units, the USB-C port is probably connected directly to the processors of the DS and the expansion units, but the drives are all connected with SATA protocols and hardware, so they can’t promess any more speed than SATA 6Gbps even if the port is 10Gbps. Maybe the port is USB-C 10Gbps and can be used for other means tho?

Two x 2.5 is much better than 4×1 in LAG. While 4×1 LAG gives you a combined 4Gbbps of bandwidth its only 1Gbbps PER STREAM. Dual 2.5’s in lag gives you 5Gbbps aggregate, which yeah is a 1G upgrade, but ALSO gives you 2.5Gbps per stream which is a huge improvement.

If I had to buy a desktop NAS right now, it would probably be UGREEN. Their OS is still evolving. It’s not bad in its current form and I am free to put something else on the box.

Kind of hard to entertain an upgrade when I’m using a DS712+ still (and also a DS420+; both are NAS ONLY and running nothing else)
It’s clear that my upgrade path will be a (rubbishy in some ways) custom-built NAS out of some 2U case. Trick there is to be able to fit several 3.5″ mechanical hard drives, decent cooling for the mainboard, and upgradability to faster than 1Gbps on MY terms. Not everyone can afford optical or even a copper Nexus switch to get 10Gbps; yes I realize I’m an infra snob and “thing that works like Cisco” is what I expect in infra (10Gbps is still stubbornly expensive at scale, at least at home)
I miss ZFS and I want my next NAS solution to support it.

1825+ with dual 2.5Gbe would be more than enough for most users, so it’ll be ultimately about the price – if it doesn’t go any higher than 1821+ then it may remain competitive on the market, but if it costs any penny more, then it’s not worth over older model at all

I encode the videos for iTunes and then Plex Library picks up the folder contents.
So streaming iTunes videos to AppleTV Plex Client or AppleTV client from Apple.
As such the NAS not doing any transcoding.

I currently own a Synology DiskStation918. Over the years, I’ve noticed that Synology has been gradually locking down their hardware, which has been a significant deterrent for me. I’ve been keeping an eye on the DXP4800+ since its release last year, but it has unfortunately been unavailable in the UK. I reached out to UGREEN regarding a potential UK release of the DXP4800+. Within 10 minutes, I received a confirmation that the product should be available in a few weeks, subject to any unforeseen delays.
Bye,bye Synology. I’ve moved on, unlike your hardware.

They’re like my ex-wife was, always late, always a disappointment, and always trying to tell me they’re better and more value than they really are, and they think I’m a sucker and I’m going to come back because they do that one thing very, very well! Seriously though, if the DS15 doesn’t support 10GbE and the only change on the DS18 is to 2x 2.5GbE, I reckon I’d probably be better off getting discounted 22+ and 21+ units. The DS923+ and DS1522+ have both gone up in price by 20-30% down under lately. For Synology to take away 10Gbe seems absolutely bonkers. For photography and even office work file server 10Gbe is essential. 2.5 Gbe doesn’t even facilitate the full read/write speeds of a 4 or 5 bay NAS with spinning rust. With 4 synology HAT3100’s my DS1522+ runs around 600 MB/s via 10Gbe without any NvMe cache. Why bottle neck these devices by giving no way to get data off at the bandwidth that a bunch of spinning rust can facilitate?

Sounds like Synology have just stopped trying in the home / SMB segment. I won’t be investing in a system using dated parts (but which I would want to run for many years into the future) and run by a company that doesn’t seem to care about what (it appears to me) a lot of customers want. Even taking into account software and price, I was already leaning towards QNAP or Asustor etc., and I would still pick their current gen hardware over the new Synology offerings in a heartbeat. Can’t wait to see what these other vendors offer later this year.

Looked at this unit a while back from my DS920+ but people said 2 users on PLEX and it will struggle due to the CPU doing all the work. I know you have a more comprehensive look at the Ugreen NAS coming out soon (so this idea could possibly live on that playlist or whatever). I’m a total noob when it comes to this stuff, so please forgive my impending ignorance. Video idea:
I’m pretty suret the _download_ app on the Ugreen NAS has a feature that enables the user to monitor specific folders on the drive. A huge reason I purchased the Ugreen NAS is because it has an SD Card slot on it. To me, it makes sense that you should be able to plug in an SD card and have the NAS automatically transfer the media that’s on the card into a predetermined folder on the NAS. I don’t know if using the download app and setting up a watch-folder is the best way to approach this, though I know manya photographer that would freak tf out if all they had to do was plug in the card and the media automatically backed itself up onto the drive. Your channel has helped me tremendously and I’m always grateful for the efforts the two of you (and the community) have provided for us. Cheers dude.

If your right ….. and Synology have not figured out it;s their model line itself which is the issue with all the new competition on the market this is going to be too little too late …. all arrogant tech companies eventually get their just rewards and SYnology are no different …. No new Cpu, No 10Gbe etc etc …. Synology are going to bring too little too late to the party with New Asustor/Ugreen offerings really killing them on hardware and lets face it if you want NAS not a bloody virtual machine host or a camera recorder or some other such nonsense already Synology is not showing much benefit with it’s only ace in the hole which is DSM …. I have a 1821+ ….It works fine as a storage device attached to my Network and that’s what I want it for. I have run out of space so I need another device and at this stage it’s going to be Asustor because I don’t want to be dictated too what Hard drives I use and I don’t want to pay for 10Gbe. Whatever “Ryzon” is, one thing is for sure: They will leave no stone unturned and comb the plant from the Mariana Trench to Mount Everest to make absolutely 101% sure they end up with the oldest, least efficient CPU without any gfx unit whatsoever that a vendor will offer them so they don’t have to rob museums at night. If there were enough Enigmas to go around from WWII, you can bet the farm they’d slap its mechanics in there. Heck, if they could get away with it, they’d just toss a teaspoon full of sand in there and call it a day. Enough silicon if you ask Synology.
Man, I really used to love their stuff, but their hardware choices went from borderline / questionable to full-on ridiculous. At this point, they’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The 1825+ will likely require you to use Synology drives ONLY and not allow you use 3rd party, or it will but just show the silly error that the drive is not supported. Having a mult-LAN port on the back up to 10GbE would be nice but that would only drive the price up more for the unit.

What blows my mind is that we get seagulls in Chicago. I live in a suburb that is a good 40 minute drive from lake Michigan, and we have them around here.

If you don’t disrupt your market yourself someone else will disrupt your market for you ????
I think that they should go for V3000 series which has dual 10Gb MACs ???? but who am I kidding? ????

Does it support SHR?

i gave up on synology a long time ago and switched over to Qnap. Qnap just lacks a little behind the OS but has way better hardware. if synology doesnt come out with a better hardware platform than qnap did 5years ago then they should just give up now.

Can’t wait for an over priced under powered NAS that forces me to buy their irrelevant over priced hardware that runs an iteratively better what, v1600 AMD CPU that can’t even transcode?
NO THANKS! Goodbye synology

Who else here is waiting for a DS925+ or DS425+, with a decent current CPU, a GPU and a >=32GB memory limit?

At last, I will be able to replace my trusted 1812+. Hope Shr will be present.

This video cam out JUST in time.
So I am in the process of purchasing the 1821+, populating it with…
5 × 18 tb ironwolf HHD
2 × 1 tb M.2 ssd for caching
2 × 32 gb Memory, (64 gb of Ram)
1 × 10 gb port
Or should I just wait for this 2025 release, this is a lot of money I’ll be sinking in all at once, so please I am extremely curious to what would be the best idea in your opinion.
Primary focus on the Nas, will be for media consumption (mp3 music, mp4 videos, all sorts various camera / phone pix).

ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for what’s essentially some plastic, an embedded ryzen from 6 years ago and a couple gigs of ECC sodimms feels like *such* a ripoff.

I just came for the Seagulls… By the way thank you – Still looking to upgrade my DS918+.

In principle the Plus series and higher should probably come with 2.5GbE. However, I sort of wonder if in practice it’ll change much. The reason is that if throughput were important, we are talking about an 8-bay, and link aggregation (either way you do it) won’t increase throughput to a single device the switch to 2.5GbE doesn’t change a lot for that buyer as they’d go 10GbE instead. For instance, my RS1221+ has 2 x 10GbE (link aggregated) in it because I want to maximise the value of my 8 x 4TB SSDs. I’m also implemented on UniFi and to get 2.5GbE I would need to go with either Enterprise or Pro Max switches. Its simpler and cheaper to dish out for a Aggregation switch and a card for the NAS, which is what I’ve done, that go top end on the switch.
Generally speaking I feel 2.5GbE is much more meaningful to a different type/level of buyer. Idk, maybe I’m looking at it wrong.

If they want a real winner 1 10Gbe, 1 2.5Gbe and 1-2 1 Gbe ports.

Can we take a moment to say how good looking your background is?

If they do not increase specs, then you may as well buy the UGreen DXP8800 Plus once UGreen actually get it listed on Amazon (was promised in June).
Can always run TrueNAS or even Xpenology on it.

Would it be possible to stick 4 NVMe bays on the bottom of the 1625+/1825+?

Btw, I absolutely agree with your informed guess of the CPU being the same. It just makes sense for them. It’d be hip and cool if they did change it ???? See what I did there? ???? Imagine 1GBe in 2024 when consumer MoBo’s offer dual 10GBe on stock.
P.S. Love your release times, as I’m always on my way to work and can fully engage in your videos here in California.

new background for you?? its way better than clutter.

Ive got a 5 bay all populated with ext4, been waiting to get a bigger nas and new drives to move over to btrfs! Also next time going to keep all volumes under 20TB so they could all potentially backup to a single archive drive.
