NAS for video editing. We have a small video team consisting of 3-4 people working mainly on PC/Adobe Premiere pro but we also have the occasional freelancer working on mac. We need a NAS that we can work from instead of having workfiles and footage files locally and moving them around. We mainly do short productions so storage capacity is not that high. We have around 8 tb of data, but would be nice with a configuration where we can upgrade the capacity as we go. We need a backup plan as well. Right now we use Dropbox Enterprise.
I had a look at your video QNAP TS-832X 8-Bay Affordable SFP+ 10Gbe NAS for Business. Will this be the best solution for us, and can you recommend 10gbe cards and cables for our stationary PCs? We will be buying from nascompares.com. Also if you can recommend a 10gbe switch.
QNAP TS-832X is a good choice. It comes with dual PCI slots, for extra 10g ports and SSD caching to improve the transfer speeds even further. It is also expandable with an expansion unit. And you can simply increase the storage space by adding extra drives. You can even start with as little as 1 drive. So many businesses are moving their editing to NAS solutions (especially to qnap thunderbolt series). The best switch for this setup will be Qnap QSW-804-4C or QSW-1208-8C. As a cheap backup solution, I can recommend BlackBlaze which offers unlimited online storage per device.
For backing up your NAS do consider BackBlaze. You can try it for 15 days free if you don't believe its good. But the main reason is unlimited backup size. Everyone else like Dropbox, Amazon, and others charge per gigabyte. But with this one there is no price difference either you backup 2 bay or 8 bay NAS. The other great feature is version control. So even if you get hit by ransomware type of virus or simply deleted or mistakenly changed few files. You can restore your data from historical backup versions and get all data back. You can get it for free here and try:
