Brand New Synology RS819 Rackmount NAS for 2019
During Synology 2019 in Japan, we learnt about a brand new rackmount server, the Synology RS819 RackStation NAS. This new 12-inch mounting depth NAS is designed for tight spaces and those on a tighter budget. Short-depth chassis are popular when one is deploying in compact areas and are growing in popularity among places such as small offices and retail locations where there is little room for a full-sized rack.
Who is the Synology RS819 Rackstation NAS targetted at?
The RS819 Rackstation NAS is designed for business users with an eye on their budget. This NAS is the follow up to the popular cost-effective rackmount NAS, the Synology RS816. Like its predecessor, it is chiefly aimed at users who have less demanding overall system hardware requirements but still desire a robust, expandable storage device that includes all the software advantages that Synology and DSM include. The RS819 is actually a big leap in hardware over the RS816, and although I am sure this will be reflected in the price, it does appear to have grown much more in the style of the RS818+, featuring a vastly improved CPU, PCIe upgradability to add 10GBe or SSD Cache cards and with those, a much better support of key killer apps, such as:
- Synology Active Backup Suite
- Surveillance Station
- Synology Moments
- Synology Chat
- Synology Drive
- Plex Media Server
- VM Support
- Docker Container Support
What is the Difference Between the RS819 and RS816 NAS?
The difference between the newly announced RS819 Rackmount NAS and the older RS816 2016 release is pretty big in terms of internal hardware and it’s improvements to software performance. There has been a growing trend for Synology to ramp up their hardware significantly when compared with the pre-2016 series. Any increase in hardware between a new and old generation is to be expected, but it is the hardware efficiency and architecture in this case that has improved vastly:

When will the Synology RS819 NAS be Released?
Synology has been especially discreet about the RS819 Rackstation, with just 2-3 stops left on their world launch tour, this is a very late reveal compared with the likes of the DS1819+ and UC300. A few details were leaked, such as the physical build, CPU and external rackmount chassis were revealed in highlights, but for the most part, we know sparse details. A release will almost certainly be the beginning of 2019 in Q1. This has always been a big reveal and release period for Synology and business hardware (tax year factor perhaps?) and we fully expect the RS819 Synology rackmount NAS released around then. However, as always, I recommend using the availability button below to check or bookmark this page as we add more updates.
How much will the Synology RS819 NAS cost?
As this is a 4 Bay Synology NAS, it could easily be compared in price with the likewise RS816 without media of £420 ex.VAT, however, given that the RS819 Rackstation NAS features a much better internal CPU, PCIe upgrade and is a release 2 years on then I think we will see prices in excess of £480-500+ ex.VAT and much closer to that of the RS818+. Of course, this is mere speculation and we will have a much clearer idea of the price of the Synology RS819 Rackmount NAS when further specifications are revealed and release date made clearer.
