Replacement for Synology 409+. Looking to upgrade my Synology DS409+ after 12 years of great service. Currently, I’ve a couple of media boxes, HDX 1000 (similar architecture to the old popcorn time boxes), that connect to our cat6 network and access the 409+ so we can play media on our Panasonic smart TV and Sony non-smart TV.
The main purpose of any new Synology (I like Synology) NAS is to replace the Media players as the technology never really caught on and I know one day they will die.
Which would be the best transcoding 4 bay NAS to buy. Money is no object as if it lasts 12 years like my 409+ it’s well worth it.
My only confusion is how does the user, me, select which files to play on the TV? Currently, the HDX 1000 come with remotes and if the NAS had a remote, I’d have to be able to ‘see’ it for it to work, which in our house I wouldn’t. (we also have a couple of Amazon fire sticks if they could help?)
People often choose Synology as a longterm investment option. It is reliable and easy to use NAS system. As today- the best 4-bay transcoding NAS from Synology is DS918+. It is capable to transcode video even up to a 4K. This should be sufficient to last for you another 10years. With a DLNA enables or Video station app installed on the NAS – your smart TV will see the video files on the network and will allow you to use a TV remote to select a video to play. You can also install DS video app on a Fire TV and use its remote to choose a video file. Or if you own a smartphone – you can install DS Video app and control which video is played on which TV.
