Introducing the All-New TrueNAS SCALE 22.12: The Ultimate Solution for Hyperconverged and Scale-Out Storage

iXsystems, the leading provider of Open Source storage solutions, has announced the launch of TrueNAS SCALE 22.12 “Bluefin”, the second major version of their hyperconverged storage operating system. The software is designed to provide enterprise-grade file, block, and object storage, while also supporting the deployment of applications and virtual machines (VMs).

TrueNAS SCALE 22.12 is now generally available after four months of testing two beta versions and a release candidate. The software is freely downloadable, and it builds on the solid foundation of the first release, TrueNAS SCALE 22.02 “Angelfish” which was launched in February 2022. Angelfish successfully introduced a Linux OS foundation, OpenZFS file system, containers (Kubernetes and Docker), and clustering to TrueNAS storage environments, enabling over 40,000 deployed systems in only 10 months. Bluefin will expand to many more use cases and environments, and the iXsystems team expects the software to pass 100,000 installations and 2 Exabytes of data under management in 2023.

New Features

TrueNAS SCALE 22.12 comes with several new features that will benefit users. Some of the most significant updates include:

FIPS-140 Security: This feature provides restricted administration privileges to non-root users, Role Based Access Control, and verified crypto modules. This ensures that the software is secure and that only authorized personnel can access sensitive data.

Kubernetes CSI Driver: Kubernetes clusters can now use TrueNAS SCALE as the storage cluster. TrueNAS SCALE can support Kubernetes CSI, VMware ESXi, and OpenStack Cinder, as well as provide clustered file and object storage services.

Cluster Management: The software includes new APIs that reduce downtime and operational risks when replacing a Gluster node in a cluster. This makes it easier for users to manage their storage clusters.

Docker OverlayFS: OverlayFS support within OpenZFS enables greatly reduced overhead when running containerized workloads. This means that users can run more workloads on the same hardware, which can save money on hardware costs.

Virtualization Improvements: USB device pass-through and CPU pinning are now supported, in addition to the existing pass-through across PCIe devices, including GPUs. This allows users to run more demanding workloads on the same hardware.

Apps GPU Acceleration: A newer generation of GPUs (Intel Alderlake, NVIDIA GeForce-30xx) are now supported for sharing with application workloads. This means that users can run more demanding workloads on the same hardware.

iX-Storj service: This is a game changer for cloud storage reliability, costs, and performance. It provides globally distributed storage with Web 3.0 technology, which makes it easier for users to access their data from anywhere in the world.

Enterprise Support: TrueNAS SCALE inherits all the HA and support tools of TrueNAS Enterprise as a separate license with up to 24×365 support. This means that users can get support when they need it, which can save money on downtime costs.

New TrueNAS R30 NVMe All-Flash

In addition to the release of TrueNAS SCALE 22.12, iXsystems has also launched the latest TrueNAS storage system, the TrueNAS R30. The system offers 16 NVMe Gen4 SSDs per system and 2 dual-port 100GbE NICs in a 1U package, and each node is capable of over 30GB/s bandwidth. Typically configured with 32 Cores, 256GB of RAM, and up to 240TB of NVMe Flash.
