Synology RS1619xs+ NAS – Behold the beast!
We continue our look at the NAS at the Synology Solution Exhibition here in Germany by looking at the most powerful unit from the range up close. The Synology RS1619xs+ is the smallest, yet most powerful rackmount in the Synology XS elite series. Since we first mentioned it here on NASCompares and on the SPANTv YouTube channel, it is one of the most popular new units announced. Whilst I was at the event, I took the time to ask your most commonly asked questions about the RS1619xs+ to them directly. I will try to keep this updated and let you know the answers to your questions as they arrive – so do keep asking about all things Synology!
The Specifications of the RS1619xs+ from Synology – Quick Reminder
If you did not catch our coverage of the RS1619xs+ previously, below is a quick reminder of the hardware/software specs. Unsurprisingly (and like most of the NAS devices we have seen at CeBit) it’s a pretty impressive setup:

Your Questions about the RS1619xs+ Answered
This is not the first time we have heard about the RS1619xs+ NAS. Between unofficial Synology leaks and our coverage of Computex 2018 here on NASCompares, SPANTv and NCTv, we have let you guys know plenty about the RS1619xs+. However, now we are face to face with it and the team at Synology we got a chance to put your questions directly to them. I will keep these questions updated as much as possible and add more if they get popular. Here is what you wanted to know:
When will the Synology RS1619xs+ be Available to buy?
Unsurprisingly, Synology was rather secretive about things like price and release. With prices generally being made available around 6 weeks prior to official announcement and release, they would not be pinned down on a figure. As this is an XS model, we are easily going to see a price in the 4 figures, but aside from that, I think we are going to have to place it somewhere close to the DS3018xs. Even then, they would not be baited into a commitment. Regarding release, they would confirm that it would be the end of Q3, so if you can wait – definitely hold out for this one. Otherwise, the DS3018xs is your next choice. Almost certainly lower in price too.
Is there DEFINITELY going to be a Redundant PSU version?
Yes, there will definitely be a redundant PSU version. After slight confusing regarding publication of part numbers on the Taiwan side of marketing the SSE, I can confirm that there is a two PSU version that will be released at the same time too. Do remember though that the part numbers differ and you do not want to make an error when ordering. So, it is the RS1619xs+ and RS1619RPxs that have 1 and 2 PSU respectively.
If I have purchased an XS NAS in the last 5 Years, is there any way to part/exchange it for the RS1619xs+?
Sadly, this is very much not something that Synology will entertain. It isn’t hugely surprising, as this is rare practice in this industry. One could argue that a device like the RS1619xs+ or RS1619RPxs have never been available and people have purchased what they believe is now a 2nd best solution. However, the hardware config for the RS1619 device has been available in other configurations to a greater or lesser degree in other Synology NAS devices and would significantly hard development if a company started this policy.
Will the RS1619xs+ feature BTRFS and SHR?
I can confirm that this XS device will DEFINITELY feature both the Synology Hybrid RAID system and the BTRFS file system (I know I technically said file system-file system, just let it go ok!). I know that may seem obvious to a number of you, but for those that bought one of the first XS range NAS, they are aware that both are not always supported on some CPU. This, however, will be fine!
