New Synology DS3617xsII, DS2419+II and DX1215II NAS Hardware Listed

Synology has been in the process of releasing numerous pieces of enterprise solutions in the first half of 2021 (almost exclusively in their rackstation series) and a fair few people have been wondering if/when the Diskstation series will be seeing any new hardware releases before the autumn. Today I wanted to share a little change that was spotted on the official Synology pages in Taiwan that relate to three desktop enclosures from their brand that are seemingly updates on popular 12-bay systems, the DS3617xsII and DS2419+II NAS, as well as the DX1215II expansion chassis.

UPDATE May ’21 – After contacting Synology, they state that the new DS3617xsII, DS2419+II and DX1215II new revisions are centred around a change in the PSU used inside and another small component internally.

However, it is worth highlighting that despite their appearance on the official product pages, that all three are near enough IDENTICAL to the DS3617xs, DS2419+ and DX1215, with minor differences on the product pages when compared with the ‘non II versions’ on other regional pages. The CPU, the Memory type and quantity, the Ports and the storage abilities are exactly the same. Indeed, aside from a small difference surrounding the PCIe compatibility, these systems do seem to be almost indistinguishable, at least on a spec sheet level of hardware.

What Are the Hardware Specifications of the Synology DS2419+II, DS3617xsII and DX1215II NAS Devices?

As mentioned, the hardware specifications and data sheets of the Synology DS3617xs II and DS2419+ II have had little to no change on the previously listed devices (with the 12-Bay expansion DX1215II being even more inscrutable) Both systems use the Intel Xeon and Intel Atom-based processors and DDR4 ECC of their current iteration:

So, what exactly is going on? Is this more to do with DSM 7 compatibility? Is this perhaps to allow the support of newer generation hardware revisions in PCIe cards for SSD Caching, 10Gbe, Combo cards and 25Gbe Connected NICs?

Are the DS3617xs II, DS2419+ II and DX1215 II New NAS or Just Updated Revisions?

At this early stage, I have to admit that the difference between these systems is unknown to me. I DO think that this is a move by the brand to bring these older generation systems in line with the newer portfolio and aside from likely DSM 7.0 related updates (as DSM 7 could always be launched gradually across regions and having it on the flash module inside is possible), or potential hardware shortages leading to the CPU being potentially changed (but not updated online as of yet) could all be the reason for the DS3617xsII and DS2419+II NAS arriving on the scene, it is still too early to understand what these devices have to offer over the DS3617xs, DS2419+ and DX1215.
