Looking for some advice on whether to go with Synology vs QNAP. I currently have a Drobo 4-bay with Firewire (4x2TB drive) that I am looking to upgrade to Synology or QNAP. I mainly use it for storing movies/photos/tv shows for use with Plex. For the most part, I am all macOS and iOS. I currently have my Drobo connected to a Mac Pro. I’ve been set on getting the Synology DS1517+ as I like the Synology product line. A few buddies of mine have purchased the QNAPs and wanted to find a QNAP equivalent to the DS1517+. Do you have any specific thoughts on the Apps available for both systems? What is your recommendation?
Qnap TS-563 would be an only comparable 5-bay alternative. But if you want a Qnap for multimedia, you should look at TS-453B or TS-653B (Be budget option). B series have direct attach connectivity and also NAS function at the same time. You can also leave 1 or more bays empty for future expansion which is easy to do. There are probably more apps available on Qnap, but Synology apps would feel more like apple style.
