Hello, I’m looking for a NAS for video editing from a Mac connected with 10Gbe. What would be the best option? Everybody gets the TVS-1282T3 but it looks just overkill. I just need fast transfer speed and space. I’m the only editor.
Yes, this is an interesting phenomenon, that people think expensive means better. But in reality, Cheap 10GbE enabled NAS can achieve the same or better transfer speeds than expensive NAS with latest CPU. If you look at specs of most popular video editing storage solution DAS boxes from Pegasus, Areca, and Lacie, you will notice that hardware is very low spec. But they focus on a connection itself and a RAID to ensure that user gets the best possible speed he could get. But there are advantages of each option.

What do I need to set up 10Gbe Network?
Our tests prove that link aggregated 10GbE solutions perform faster than many direct attached NAS solutions. What you need is NAS with one or more 10GbE ports.
Then you need a smart switch with at least 2 or more 10GbE ports (more for link aggregation).
You also need a PC or MAC with a 10GbE card or adapter and cat 6a or cat7 cables (read here).
This new setup will not look any different than the network you are having now because all this upgrade is changing cables and card to a better quality hardware using still the same connections like rj45.
Do I need powerful NAS for video editing?
There are several advantages of getting a NAS with a powerful processor for video editing. It is a better solution for bigger editing teams with more advanced requirements. Here are few benefits of more powerful NAS system:

This will also let you stream finished video file over the internet or local network with automatic format change – understandable to a destination device. Or you can do all editing on a NAS. Using virtual machines you can connect to a NAS fro anywhere where is internet similar to TeamViewer app and do all work remotely. This will feel like you are working on a PC using all its performance, but without actual PC on your table.
What is the best NAS/DAS for video editing?
Funny enough, nobody is trying to compete with Qnap in this race. Qnap is the only manufacturer offering NAS solution with DAS functionality. You can choose either Tunderbolt2 or Thunderbolt3 or even 10GbE or 40Gbe connection for fastest possible editing speeds.
