With significant changes to how multimedia is handled, this update could be a turning point for many users. Let’s dive into what this update means for your NAS experience, particularly focusing on the multimedia aspects.

Current issues people face after upgrading [Update on 27th August 2024]:

Based on the provided information, here are the issues people have encountered so far with the DSM 7.2.2 update:

  1. Removal of Video Station Support: The update no longer supports Video Station, which has upset users who rely on this feature for media management and playback.
  2. Incompatibility with Plex: The DSM 7.2.2 update has caused issues with Plex, requiring users to update to a new version of Plex specifically compatible with DSM 7.2.2.
  3. iDrive Package Incompatibility: Users have reported that the iDrive package is not compatible with DSM 7.2.2, causing it to stop working on some systems.
  4. Issues with HEIC and HEVC Media: Newly uploaded HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos may not be processed correctly, which is a concern for users managing high-efficiency media formats.
  5. Problems with DDNS and Hyper Backup: External access via DDNS for Hyper Backup does not work properly, affecting remote backup capabilities.

PLEX FIXES

Recent discussions on Reddit reveal that Synology’s decision to discontinue support for Video Station (DS Video) has left many users disappointed. The removal of Video Station from the Package Center, especially after the DSM 7.2.2 update, has created frustration among those who relied on it for viewing family videos through Quick Connect. The app was known for providing a simple, out-of-the-box solution for media playback, including the generation of video thumbnails, which enhanced the user experience by showing previews before playing videos.

Users have expressed concerns about the lack of a clear alternative, with some suggesting that Synology Photos or third-party options like Plex and Jellyfin could fill the gap. However, these alternatives may not provide the same seamless integration or specific functionalities, such as subtitle support and ease of use for non-technical family members, that Video Station offered. The discontinuation is seen as part of Synology’s broader move away from supporting certain media codecs due to licensing costs, which is viewed by many as a step back for consumer-focused features. This shift has led some long-time Synology users to reconsider their loyalty, as the company appears to be focusing more on business clients rather than home users.

The recent DSM 7.2.2 update for Synology NAS systems has sparked significant concern among users due to changes in how HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos are handled in Synology Photos. Unlike previous versions, where the NAS handled the generation of previews and thumbnails for these file formats, the latest update offloads this task to client devices. This shift requires users to install the Synology Image Assistant extension on their desktops or enable specific settings in the Synology Photos mobile app to view and manage these files effectively. This change was not clearly communicated in the release notes, leaving many users surprised and frustrated when their media files didn’t display as expected after the update.

For many iPhone users, who commonly use HEIC and HEVC formats, this update significantly impacts the usability of Synology Photos. The requirement to install additional software or use specific apps adds complexity, potentially affecting the seamless experience users expect from Synology’s ecosystem. Users have voiced concerns that the move away from NAS-handled background processing could slow down media access and increase the storage and processing load on individual devices. This is particularly problematic for those with large media libraries who rely on the NAS to efficiently manage and optimize file storage.

The update has also highlighted a broader shift in Synology’s focus, from catering primarily to consumer needs to targeting small and medium-sized business clients. Long-time users feel that Synology is deprioritizing consumer-centric features in favor of business-oriented functionalities, leading to frustration among those who invested in Synology products for their ease of use and comprehensive media management capabilities. This sentiment has prompted some users to explore alternative software solutions or consider creating custom workflows to maintain the functionality they require. As the community continues to voice its concerns, it remains crucial for Synology to address these issues and provide clearer communication and support to ensure user satisfaction.

Key Changes in DSM 7.2.2

  1. No More Video Station: One of the most notable changes is the removal of Video Station from DSM 7.2.2. Synology users have long relied on Video Station for managing and streaming their media libraries. With this update, Video Station is no longer available, forcing users to find alternative ways to stream their videos. Synology suggests using third-party apps like Jellyfin or Plex for media streaming, but this means users will need separate apps for different functionalities—one for backing up photos and videos, and another for streaming.
  2. Shift of Media Processing to End Devices: Starting with DSM 7.2.2, processing of media files using popular codecs such as HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 will now be handled by end devices like smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. This shift aims to reduce the workload on the NAS system and improve overall efficiency. However, it also means that devices must support these codecs, or users will face limitations in media playback. This could be problematic for those with older devices or those trying to stream high-quality 4K content.
  3. Transcoding Limited to Specific Models: Transcoding capabilities, which allow media files to be converted on the fly for compatibility with various devices, are now restricted. Only VA series NAS models and the Surveillance Station application will continue to support server-side transcoding of AVC (H.264) streams. For all other models, transcoding must be handled on the receiving device. This change might hinder the experience for users who need to stream high-resolution media remotely, as it requires sufficient processing power and bandwidth.
  4. No Downgrading After Update: An important note with this update is that once you install DSM 7.2.2, you cannot downgrade to a previous DSM version. Users need to carefully consider if the new features and changes align with their needs, especially those who heavily rely on multimedia capabilities.

Impact on Multimedia Experience

The removal of Video Station and the shift to device-side media processing significantly impact how users interact with their Synology NAS for multimedia. Those who used Synology for its robust, integrated multimedia solutions might feel the need to explore other platforms or third-party applications to maintain the same level of functionality.

Workarounds and Recommendations

  1. Third-Party Media Servers: With the phasing out of Video Station, Synology recommends using third-party media servers like Jellyfin or Plex. These platforms offer robust media streaming solutions, though they come with the caveat of managing and setting up additional software.
  2. Upgrade End Devices: To adapt to the shift in media processing, ensure that your end devices (TVs, smartphones, tablets) are capable of handling HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs. This might involve updating software or purchasing new hardware that supports these standards.
  3. Consider Your Streaming Needs: If remote streaming of high-resolution content like 4K videos is crucial, assess your network upload speeds and the capabilities of your receiving devices. Synology’s recommendation to handle transcoding on receiving devices might not be feasible for everyone, especially those with slower internet connections or less powerful devices.

Conclusion

The DSM 7.2.2 update marks a significant change in how Synology handles multimedia. While the focus on reducing system resource usage and improving efficiency is understandable, it does present challenges for users who have come to rely on Synology’s integrated multimedia features. As always, it’s important to assess your specific needs and adjust your setup accordingly. This might mean embracing third-party solutions, upgrading devices, or reevaluating how multimedia fits into your NAS strategy.

In the conversation about DSM 7.2.2, specific details were discussed regarding SSD volumes (or SSD pools) and their behavior after the update:

  1. Compatibility Issues with SSD Volumes:
    • After updating to DSM 7.2.2, one user, kaj, reported that their NAS began beeping continuously and displayed a message indicating that the drives in Volume 2 (an SSD volume) were incompatible. This issue prevented access to Volume 2.
    • The NAS system flagged the SSDs as incompatible post-update, which is a common issue when using non-Synology or third-party SSDs in certain NAS models, especially after major DSM updates that might change how the system handles hardware compatibility.
  2. Using Compatibility Scripts:
    • To resolve this issue, kaj had a script set up to handle compatibility with HDD/SSD drives, which was intended to run at startup. However, even with this script, the drives were not recognized after the update.
    • Kaj downloaded an updated version of the compatibility script and set it as a startup task. After implementing the updated script and rebooting the NAS, the system recognized the SSDs, and access to Volume 2 was restored.
  3. General Advice and Observations:
    • The issue discussed highlights the importance of having updated scripts or workarounds in place, particularly for users who modify their NAS setups with non-standard components or configurations. The update to DSM 7.2.2 might have altered how the system checks for drive compatibility, necessitating updated scripts to ensure continued operation of SSD volumes.
    • Another participant, FrostByte, noted that their specific model (DS1821+) did not require any hacks or scripts to recognize SSD volumes, suggesting that the impact of the update on SSD compatibility might vary between different NAS models or setups.
  4. Performance and Management of SSD Volumes:
    • While not explicitly detailed in the provided conversation snippets, the general concerns around SSD volume management post-update likely relate to maintaining performance and ensuring that the NAS can effectively use SSDs for tasks such as caching, storing high-demand data, or running applications that benefit from faster storage access.

  1. I’m really frustrated with Synology’s recent moves. If I understand it correctly – dropping features like Video Station and support for crucial codecs (H.265, etc.) feels like they’re giving a big two-finger salute to their long-standing small home users. Sure, maybe they want to focus on enterprise customers, but it’s at the expense of people who’ve already invested a lot of time and money into their products.

What’s really worrying me—and I don’t see many others talking about this—is what might happen to the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) setup. I switched from a standard RAID configuration to SHR, and now I’m concerned that Synology could pull the rug out from under us here too. What if they decide to drop SHR, or worse, start charging a licence fee for using this proprietary system?

It’s not just about losing features; it’s the underlying fear that Synology can yank our chosen storage solutions whenever it suits their business model. If it comes to that, what can we do? Will we be locked into their ecosystem and forced to pay up just to keep our data arrangements intact?

It feels like Synology is playing a risky game with user trust. I just hope they realise how alienating these decisions can be before it’s too late.

  2. Majorly impacted by Synology discontinuing Video Station. My entire family is supported by the Video Station. Currently we were putting together a Smart Playlist that notes those movies that have Audio Discription for the blind. This is for my Grand Dad who is now completely blind, and my cousin sister who is legally blind. The whole reason we went with Synology was for the media center feature. My business mentor passed away in 2021 and the estate needed a way to save his digital movie library and get it to his daughter. Tonight I made a phone call to Synology for advanced tech support on Video Station and its Smart Playlist for my Grand Dad. Synology’s casual response. And Oh,… by the way,.. we are discontinuing. What? Can you repeat that last part? Synology, the discontinuation of Video Station is so upsetting!

  3. @Robbie
    Just a question about this.

I have a j series so i can’t try this but i wonder if it would work for people who want to try it before they actually upgrade.

Could a user setup a Synology Nas with DSM7.2.2 inside of a VM, and then test that with their network and get a more exact understanding of what they are going to lose based on their exact use case scenario?

Im just not wanting to upgrade because i have many avc and hvec files but my j series really doesn’t do the job anyway for transcoding those. I use plex and vlc but im just not sure if my end user clients can handle all of the transcoding with out downloading the file first. I don’t quite have a full understanding so I’m hesitant.

  4. Unbelievable they are completely going overboard with their security! Luckily I have QNAP, then just some less beautiful software that can do the same thing. When they have a 2.5G network port they will announce it as a revelation! While QNAP has had this for years.
They are completely going overboard at Synology and have lost their focus on what it is really about.

  5. I feel very conned, you and others have sung the praises – rightly – of synology. So having invested heavily in a 923+ earlier this year I find that one of my key reasons was Plex will cease to deliver. I might as well have purchased a less expensive machine. Not you fault, nor the others but I find it more than disappointing. I will move away for my plex solution and when the time comes to replace the 923 – and perhaps much earlier – I will NEVER patronise Synology again. Well done Synology!!

  6. Retiring Video Station was a very bad idea. In the last two days I tried Plex, didn’t like it, and Jellyfin which I couldn’t get someone after following instructions. (I kept getting error messages about how Jellyfin couldn’t be accessed while in QuickConnect). Video Station was seamless and super easy to set up. Nothing so far even compares to it. I bought 3 Firesticks in the last year because of the DS Video app that wasn’t available on my Vizio tvs. They need to bring Video Station back. I have over 650 movies.

  7. A very bad decision. I use both Audio Station and Video Station a lot, even though I have Plex (and PlexAmp). This way they leave the consumer in the cold. Apparently they will focus on the Business user in the future.
Question: As Video Station is not removed by the upgrade, does that mean it still functions properly under DSM 7.2.2.?
    REPLY ON YOUTUBE

  8. The problem is that we as consumesr have already bougt this nas and then they decide to kill these apps after the sale has completed. That is terrible since we also pay for the software and updates. Otherwise we could also buy a cheaper alternatives, but we bought it fot the software ecosystem which is the unique selling point of Synology.
I also bought DS423+ for aproximately 1 year ago or less. This nas has multimedia capabilities and now they decide to kill that feature. I’m very sad about that.
    REPLY ON YOUTUBE

  9. 100% agree with buyers looking elsewhere because I am in the market for a bigger machine. DS920+ 4 bay currently and looking to a 6 or 8 bay. Although I use Plex for my home media I also use video station for family members outside our home. With no built in video station then I will be looking at other manufacturers.

Not looking into your comments on the video encoding change. I may have it wrong but I think you said encoding/decoding? will be down to the client devices not the NAS? What if the client device does not have the power to encode/decode the video?

  10. Sucx , I’m impacted by the termination of video station and hope they stealthily build a better and improved video app in future. when is the deadline to force to upgrade to 7.2.2 ?
    REPLY ON YOUTUBE

  11. I use video station and audio station rather often and wouldn’t know what to do without them. I can not get along with plex or envy hence why I element for synologys integrated applications. This is a serious back step and not for the better

  12. We (me, my wife and kids) use Video Station on daily base. That step from Synology Group is really sad. Do you think is there any chance to use Video Station under new 7.2.2 system? Thx
    REPLY ON YOUTUBE

  13. This really stinks. I have an absolute ton of custom metadata in that app that will likely have to be recreated from scratch, and one of the things I liked most about Video Station is that it isn’t a terrible resource hog like Plex. Not to mention that Plex costs money while Video Station was included in the price of the equipment. Basically, the whole point of Synology was that you have a relatively hassle free experience but you pay a lot more for that vs. the alternative solutions.

  14. Id be fine if videostation was CHANGING (ie not gone) just no transcode… but they removed it. Id also accept a ‘legacy’ videostation app being available but not updated… removing it is a step too far- my nas was bought for streaming. I dont want local only or additional subs or loging on. For now i wont be updating.

  15. So— for videos that I’ve converted from .ISO using handbrake to “H.264 / HVEC” … and using PLEX, is there any impact on those videos? Will Plex cause many of my movies to no longer work or they will all work and I won’t notice the difference? Is my TV just handling the playing of them now? not sure I understand.

  16. Very disappointing news. I bought my NAS for the sole purpose of housing all my music, photos and movies. Now I need to find a paid solution that works on my NAS for the same purpose I bought it for. When they dropped itunes server, I went to Audio station, my photos are still in the process to be organized and all our music and then POOF.

  17. A sad state of affairs for Synology users…. I have been a user with DS1010 from 2010.. and now have 5 Synology NAS (3 x12Bays, 2x8Bays)…

DS Video isn’t great but it works and is at least Synology integrated solution. But the plan to drop DS Video isn’t the first time users have been left in a lurch.

When Synology decided to push their Synology enterprise hard drives made by Toshiba and stop supporting other hard drives, all my drives were either WD or Seagate with 10-12Gb capacities. All of the sudden, the $ per byte doubled or tripled while we were left with limited support. Vendors and Synology support wasn’t very helpful on how existing customers should move forward. It took a while before they finally permitted more 3rd party vendor drive.

How, we are faced with a multi-media app issue… Seriously, if I find a NAS that will do the job, I will move away… the writing seems to be on the wall…

    All the best Synology…

  18. Yeah my current Synology is my last one. Just not sure what to get next. Just need something with good video encode/decode like the Qnap i5/i7. Just wish any of the existing NAS options had a cpu that had AV1 encode but seems that is still about 2 years away. Unless I get a Qnap and add a Nvidia GPU for AV1?

  19. this update impacting Synology Photo’s is my biggest concern.

I could go for Immich or an other third party solution but setting one of those up is looks far more complicated than Synology Photo’s which was just plug&play and worked great.

I too was looking to upgrade for my existing Synology NAS, but as they are doing more and more anti-consumer things lately (warnings due to not using Synology labeled disks anyone?!) I am actually considering a different brand or building a system on my own and using truenas.

  20. Was just on the fence about buying a few more synology systems. Looks like synology lost a couple thousand dollars with this move, as i actually use dsvideo station, and photos. They stopped caring about customers and screwed us, and thats okay, this is how capitalism works, and if you don’t buy/invest into their stuff, IE speak loudly with your money i believe this will get the point across.

  21. I almost updated by uninstalling Video Station to 7.2.2 when prompted. After watching several videos about the issues and uninstalling it (but not updating), I reinstalled Video Station after a few days. Today, I checked if it still needed updating. It showed that my operating system was up-to-date, as it was before, and it did not prompt me to update. I still have Video Station, but I no longer need to update the operating system to 7.2.2, as it is no longer showing any updates. In fact, it says that my system is up-to-date. I checked after updating synology photos today.

  23. I’m a Video Station User and i never will move my 15TB of Movies and Series to another App. I tried Jellyfin but after 2 Minutes and a bunch of Movies it has 30% wrong detections and doubled Movied. 25. The entire purpose of Synology is keeping the security/login under one door to access your data. It doesn’t have to be a as good. They could have integrated jellyfin.

  26. I’ve been using Synology since the J-series and still have that unit. Video Station, Audio Station have been my primary services since day one. I’ve tried Plex and it’s horrible, not only is there no integration with the Synology accounts, mobile app clients have to pay for their clients. My family uses DS video and DS audio more than they use iTunes. Synology’s business model was all focused on hosting your own content and not relying on or paying for cloud services. This will only keep people from upgrading their DSM, thus making them more and more vulnerable to attack over time. I hate this decision and can’t understand why they are really doing this.

  27. Jellyfin in container station works fine if you have an intel processor NAS due to the fact it has video support if not and you have a newer Ryzen processor model your up the creek without a paddle! thanks synology for making me “not want” to upgrade my NAS

  28. Hey Robbie, Ever since Synology started putting AMD processors in their presumer units, I moved Plex to a 12th gen Intel-based mini PC that I picked up used for cheap and use the NAS for storing the media files. Among other things, it allows me to port forward to my Plex box without putting my NAS at risk.

  29. I can’t believe this is happening. I purchased a DS916+ which includes built-in hardware transcoding of everything Synology says it is now discontinuing. I am heavily invested in Video Station as I have hundreds of movies on my Synology with DS Video clients on my TV, Apple TV, phones, and tablets. This is a slap in the face to customers which purchase Synology. I can see them not wanting to include the hardware transcoding, but the only reason I can think of as to why they are doing this is because of licensing. As a software engineer, I know it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to continue to move Video Station forward. There is something behind this move, and it is upsetting a lot of customers, including myself. I’m not sure the direction I will take. Not install 7.2.2, or invest in a move to Plex or something else. This is a big black eye on Synology in my opinion.

And the first NAS to have 2.5Gb lan (WORM) file locking and support for JXL opus and AV1
will get my money. If the is ever a JXL app it will need a JPEG to JXL zero loss converter bult in
with a transcoder so we still have support for older devices also be good if we can get a app
for opus that can transcoder to MP3.

  31. I have two synology NAS, and based all of my home cloud on their solution. This really caught me by surprise. I’m an avid user of videostation, and though I installed Jellyfin, I’m not really keen on switching. Which means at the moment I’ve stalled the 7.2.2 installation and trying to consider my options. As you mentioned, the worry is not just Videostation, but overall the status of the first-party applications. How many are going to survive in the long run? Given I feel their hardware is somewhat overpriced, the whole point of still buying a synology has been, at least for me, to leverage the inhouse software. If they’re going to rely more and more on third party solutions, then I’m afraid other NAS brands will become more compelling.

  33. Even though we use our two Synology NAS units for business purposes, we are a farm and we live where we work. In the evenings we use our NAS units for streaming videos, which is an important capability for us. As a test before possibly upgrading, I installed Jellyfin from the Community repository as a possible replacement for Video Station. Although it is quite good, I still like Video Station better. As such, I have decided not to upgrade and to freeze our systems with DSM 7.2.1-5 for eternity (and maybe even longer).

I cannot adequately describe my deep disappointment in the direction that Synology has taken. If I ever need another NAS, I will probably look elsewhere.

  34. Synology has supported and helped grow personal media files and for us users who have large digital video and audio files it has been awesome, especially with the phone and tablet integration. My son and the future generations don’t use cd’s or DVD’s and in 10 years you will not find any for sale. Physical media will die and so will the need to host it. It’s going to a rental and streaming future. Synology are reacting to this trend. Sadly ????. It will be long before Apple and android stop supporting video station.

I’ll keep a NAS (Virtual or not) under DSM7.1 with ffmpeg package and VideoStation.

For the next NAS, I’ll look for an other brand. You said it, Synology is a all in one, if now I’ve to use third party apps, why spend so much money in a more or less outdated hardware.

(Because there is nothing finished out there)

Now found out about this and i am like: Fluff my life…
I hope they will provide an alternative, because all others look like they are a downgrade in comparison in a frist breef look. I am going to wait before i even consider updating…

I wonder will they provide support for systems that don’t want to upgrade?

  39. I’ve invested a lot in my DS920+, including expensive, high-capacity disks, a RAM upgrade, and SSD cache, all to create a multimedia server and cloud storage for my family’s Apple devices. But with just one update, Synology has broken everything, and now I can’t use it as planned. I’m beyond frustrated.

The DS920+ was specifically designed for these kinds of tasks. It’s not a commercial unit—it’s meant for users like me. This update feels like a slap in the face to all of us. I’m sure there are many other users who are just as upset.

  40. I was gutted to learn that my Synology NAS was out of support and I hadn’t realized. I was struggling to find a Synology NAS with integrated gfx for Plex and transcoding duties. So I go online to get the latest on what Synology NAS I should buy and what a rabbit hole I’ve fallen in to. If supported life is artificially short, hardware is the same or lower and software products are being removed… why should I buy Synology exactly? I don’t think the lack of integrated graphics is completely unrelated to support for HEVC being dropped… it’s a penny pinching exercise. Just as a model refresh with barely any hardware changes just so you can drop support for an older model is anti-consumer. Looking seriously at the competition and leaning towards a self-build. 100% agree that the Synology replacement video should be top of the list now

  42. Thanks for the review. I am a long time Synology user since 2010 and I do use Video Station to maintain my entire personal DVD, Blu-Ray , old VHS and home video collections. I have some older devices (like Ds916+, DS1515+, etc ) that I use for media (photos, audio and videos). However I also have DS720+ and DS920+ and considering upgrades.
Synology had offered a great way to integrate all of these onto one platform. I also used the enterprise level rack devices with video station for hosting work related videos.

I think that moving home, SMB and Enterprise users off platform for new solutions may backfire in the long run.
DSM is a great NAS OS but not the only one.
Synology may be going backwards here to reduce their app offerings. I my view they should retain Video Station even if they do reduce the number of codecs it supports.
I have been holding off on making several NAS hardware purchases for both home and work while evaluating Synology’s direction for the next 5 years.
Reducing service features is not helping.

I’ve had a Synology network for about 6 years now consisting of a large main server housed at my place, a main backup server located at a family members house and some small dual-drive servers at each family members house to make it fluid and easy to manage. I take care of almost the entire familys data backup and file sharing. I’ve used Video Station until about 1,5 years ago, and decided to switch to Jellyfin instanced in a docker container. Reason primarily being the metadata api keys. That dodo-show was a pain!

  44. I am a Video Station user, and I feel that Synology’s decision is a major disappointment, as one of the main reasons I purchased your NAS was because of the native applications. I really appreciated the simplicity of Video Station, especially the fact that I didn’t have to reorganize libraries for each user.

With Plex, every time I add a user to my library, I need to reconfigure and organize the content in the main menu, which is quite annoying—something that never happened with Video Station.

My question is: Will DS Video for Android and TVs also be discontinued or affected in any way?

What will be next? Note Station, Audio Station? I use them both as well. Maybe I can’t trust Synology any more. And the way they did this was just so – I don’t give a sh*t about our home users. In my case the NAS is for my wife’s business and also for home use, so it will be a big job to move everything over to a more reliable NAS provider.

I brought this up in the Q&A session of a online Synology event yesterday and was ignored. Been using a supporting them for 13 years already. Have pointed many people towards using them but now not a chance. Videostation was easy for people to set up. Plex and Emby are not fuss free for many consumers. I use them but have some technical skills.

  48. it very much seems like they don’t want home users. I’ve been poised to jump on a Synology for a while now and I haven’t yet, thinking they’re about to update any moment now.. but.. the whole appeal is an integrated suite of software that is easy to run, doesn’t require extra costs (after the purchase of the unit itself and a new drive now and then) and doesn’t make me have to set up a bunch of third party services that I then I have to keep on top of (security issues, updates, subscriptions) etc.

What even is the advantage to this versus the ugreen NAS’s at this point?

And after learning about Synology through your channel 4-5 years ago. I decided to buy Synology mainly for the DS video station application. I’ve had fun transcribing my physical collection to digital, Still have about 4 complete western tv shows to go until I’m finished. Was a major sucker punch them completely removing DS video station for support. I have not updated my Synology. Nor will I ever since video station is gone, esp with the lose of h.264/h.265 video encoding. Looking into my options now and I’ll see where I go from there. I love DS Video station because it works purely on my LAN. Great for when I lose internet. As it stands. I’m never going to buy from Synology again, and I’m looking into other companies for options.

  51. I am astound (again).

When you are figuring out what to buy and know what you need in terms of features, you compare different products and solutions.
And all in relation to the money you’ll pay for it.

If you choose for a solution with great software to be able to do the things you want and if this solution is in one box, you made the decision upon the information the manufacturer gives you.

And if this manufacturer includes the software to do the things you want, without buying other software- or hardware, you made a legitimate choice.

You pay for the hardware AND software which is on it.
Part of the cost of this piece of hardware is the software development.

And once more: you made your decision based on the current situation on that day. And payed for it.

So if a manufacturer decides to abandon certain software or just kill it, it’s a shame!
    And bashing (loyal) customers.

When owners also want to use their NAS (and many do, IMHO) for video playback, they rely on the manufacturer’s fairness to be able to use their included video playback software (VS) to work for the years to come.

A lot of Synology NAS units are used in household and small office situations. It’s not corporate stuff.

A few of my customers solely use their Syno stuff for backups, photo – and video libraries/playback.
For which the unit was a great choice.
    Until now.

They must have some kind of deal with the Plex developers, IMHO.
Cause the reasons why they skip VS support is not very objective and obvious.

    As and analogy example:
You buy a certain car because you like the entertainment system in it. It sounds and works great.
Than with an over-the-air update the manufacturer kills this system, because it’s not an essential feature of a car to take you from A to B.
Do you except that and buy a new head unit?

  52. What about the fact that we paid for those features (VideoStation, HEVC) when we bought our Synology NAS, and that they are removing something that we paid for ? This is a dick move from Synology. If I can understand that HEVC has a recurring cost, just make it a paying license for those who needs it as Microsoft used to do. One big argument for Synology’s offer was that it used to be a full package not requiring third parties’ software. Quite worried about Synology’s direction lately

  54. If they had never supported the codecs they are now removing, continuing to not support them would have not been great. However, to remove functionality that already existed, that may have swayed someone to buy the overpriced underpowered Synology hardware because the software compensates for it, is outright bad. Synology seem to have an urge to drive themselves into obsolescence.

  57. Video Station presents a nice front end. I’ll miss it. I have Video Station integrated through my own domain name and related SSL certificates which is only available on the LAN. It’s a nice setup. But, that’s through a web interface which is what I drive guests thru if they login to the guest network. In reality, I rarely use it and guests usually don’t connect to my WiFi. Yes I have a large library of videos on Synology. But the computers, smartphones, and other streaming devices on other segments of the network all have the ability to organize and play the videos without use of Video Station. The coolness of Video Station is the cover photo and descriptive information including the actors. In the end, a file is a file and if your endpoint can process the file type, then you’re in good shape. I’ll miss it like I miss the iTunes Server.

I am assuming that viewing a thumbnail or Photo/Video on and iPhone for example would be unchanged. Correct?

  65. I’m livid. Synology: never again. Removing these features is unconscionable. The bare minimum would have been to give us a choice to pay extra to keep these features (and I would have!).

Let me outline my fury in categories:
Photos. In removing HVEC and H265 support and shifting that to edge devices, they complicate things. I need a Windows app? A browser extension? An app on my phone which will drain resources? GTFO. Meanwhile my always-on server will sit there drawing power and spinning the drives with less to do. That’s opposite land from the scenario I bought the server for! Synology Photos was my endgame photo storage solution! It was far from perfect but it worked, and I knew I could always access and browse the history of my life from anywhere, in any browser from any location. No more! Are the thumbnails generated on a given day? Who’s to say… Now I’m pushed to look for other alternatives that will do this bare minimum that Synology Photos no longer does.

    Surveillance Station:
Baffling. Again, _let me pay for the feature_ Synology! I don’t want to weigh down my network with less efficient video. Why should I? Just because you say so? Again, Surveillance Station was supposed to be my endgame security solution. Now I’m already buying into another ecosystem because Synology cut me off at the pass.

    Signaling:
What’s safe? Users of Video Station (I’m not one) are being robbed of what was a key selling point when they bought the device. Surveillance is nerfed. A contemporary video codec is removed for no good reason, and with no reasonable alternatives within the NAS ecosystem. What’ll go next? Why would I today buy into another Synology feature when I can’t be sure it’ll stick around.

It is as infuriating as it is baffling as it is disheartening.

  96. This is a MAJOR red flag, do NOT update to 7.2.2 if you use Video station on a daily basis Like I do. You won’t be able to play h.265 or H.264 (universal MP4 formats) videos if your smart TV doesn’t work on your smart TV. Apple TV boxes MIGHT be ok. When they rolled back AC3 (surround sound) audio file format and kicked it back to the devices (Smart TV’s/Apple Boxes) Android TV’s lost complete support for AC3. Who knows if andriod supports H.265 or H.264 locally on the tv’s software. Nor am I sure if AppleTV.

  97. ???? I bought my initial DS218j to use as a media server using Videostation and it served quite well in that role since 2018. I have a media library in excess of 800 movies (a substantial investment). Just last month I decided to buy a DS423+ to offload the media streaming to a more capable NAS with transcoding cability. Imagine the bomb that just dropped informing me that Videostation would not be supported on either platform if I updated to the latest version. I have tried both Jellyfin and Plex and don’t like either one. I haven’t tried Emby yet but based on the description of having to pay to watch my own movies does not sit well with me. So, I now have a ~$1000 investment which at this point is much akin to a paperweight because I can’t use it for the intended role if I want to update beyond DSM 7.2.1. Planned obsolescence or painful business decision….? It might be nice for Synology to share the decision parameters with their users, since we are the reason they exist. If it’s a money issue why not ask their Videostation (and H.265) users if they were willing to pay for that capability rather than just pull the rug out from under us. While I agree that offloading “media processing” to edge devices makes sense, I don’t think that warrants the removal of the whole Videostation package. Aside from being included with the purchase of the NAS and DSM, in my estimation Videostation was superior to any of the cited 3rd party replacements. It doesn’t make sense to kill off a clearly superior product unless there’s no other choice. I just hope Synology can live with the decision, I can’t. Basically with this decision, I can no longer recommend Synology products or for that matter use them myself anymore.

I do not want to buy something now that will be virtually useless for home use in 2 years. I also don’t understand their direction. Focus on business I can understand. But what exactly is it? Are they going to compete with MS Office? Don’t businesses use surveillance? Why do Synology seem to dismantle this area of functionality? I’m not even an advanced user. Need my NAS to share files and to stream my collection of movies to my Apple TV. Even this seems to be too much to ask now.

  111. Another key feature that is lost doing this is remote access. DSVideo is supported via QuickConnect and is very convenient for accessing Synology apps remotely. I use it quite frequently. And before someone says use a VPN, that’s not the point. A VPN requires further configuration and another app on the end device. With QuickConnect, only the app is required to be installed, no need for setting up a VPN.

I was waiting for the new 1825+ to upgrade to but taking away software and overcharging for hardware, going to have to look around again. Next requirement now will be “Can I run my choice of Linux distros on it?”. I don’t want to have to manage everything, but constant shift of companies to “You will own nothing and be happy” and/or “Enterprise customer focus only” will likely force me to..

  115. I’ve always used my NAS as a NAS. Never used VideoStation or Surveillance Station or any of that. I believe that specialized vendor software for any of those technologies works so much better. I actually prefer my NAS to be that: a NAS rather than an NVR or a photo/video client. So i must be one of the least ones here not having a problem with this change ???? Now, who knows what they might cut out in the future. But if you think about it, having a NAS dedicating CPU resources for transcoding stuff, I mean, this doesn’t make sense for me. I prefer to squeeze my CPU for storage speed much more than anything else.

  117. Thanks for the video and all the good work with this channel, which I follow for a long time!
Living in a multi-language home I have been using DS Video only for its very good capabilities to automatically search for subtitles from several different sources at once and saving them to the respective folders. Also, DS Video 3rd party player, which came up whenever there was an incompatible video/audio format (often), allowed for displaying 2 subtitles simultaneously (although it did not kept movie progress if you left). These were two good features of DS Video that I did not found elsewhere.
On the cons side, DS Video never deals well with movies Featurettes / Extras, always identifying them as separate titles (and totally wrong), making my movie library a mess to search. Although I investigated at a certain point, there was seemingly no way to handle featurettes (apart from deleting them).
Synology quit improving DS Video a long time ago and is clearly moving away from the home / media streaming market. For this market there are much better options available.
If starting from scratch in 2024, I would surely go DYI! I use an (incredibly) old desktop as a backup server running TrueNAS Core with Plex / Jellyfin jails. This server can stream 4k content to the TV with ease (no transcoding)! There are many excellent videos / recommendations on this channel, or just reuse old hardware!

For both I have an alternate means of running outside of the NAS. I use Blue Iris here. If they want to go all in on supporting Enterprise that is their prerogative. 170. If Synology carry on sending these clear signals of intent that they are pulling back from the prosumer market I doubt very much that my next NAS will be a DS whatever! Shame after 10+ years and three NASs from them!

  171. Sad to hear that. Have still ds214play and using video station. It was best in conjunction with their dyndns giving ability to watch movies on the go. With photos, video station it was a great ecosystem.
Was already checking for a replacement to a newer synology. Now with an inferior ecosystem without first-party support and needing to tinker with third-party apps synology seems like a expensive paperweight. If going diy/tinkering way then best to go freenas/jellyfin way all-in, will be superior and cheaper in the end.

  172. Synology is telling us that they only want to build NAS products for file storage and nothing more with moves like this. Since it’s what (currently) separates them from the competition this feels like a real cutting of their nose to spite their face type situation.

Add to this the fact that they recently b0rk Photos as an automatic phone back-up solution and I’m quickly running out of reasons to stick w/Synology. There were very few reasons I chose Synology to begin with but, if they’re regressing in terms of software & built-in features… I have fewer and fewer reasons to not just go with another offering that has better hardware at a lower price even though the software is basic.

If all I’m doing is storing files with my NAS then suddenly all of these “advantages” the Synology has over the competition no longer exists.

  173. Thanks for the video. I’m a long term Video station user. It’s never been stellar, however its worked well for me for years. I continue to regularly stream from VS to both Samsung TVs app as well as the firestick applications from a DS214 Play. I have no clue if Ill go Emby or Plex yet. However if Synology does decide to put out a replacement, id likely be hard pressed to do another what is surely going to be lengthy transition back.

  174. Dude, video station is not the worst. The worst part of this is Synology photos also going to crippled with the codes that iPhones use… this is such a weird, all around downgrade.

  175. The living room tv has an old Chromecast and we use Video Station (and the DS Video app) only for that. Although the youngest (20 now) likes the “pretty interface with large pictures and posters” (browser on laptop). Because the Synology UI/database is so slow to navigate (DS413j), on most machines we just use Windows Explorer: double clicking folders and the (top right) search field. Also for moving files around and adding/editing subtitle files.
I tried the Kodi app (installed on a newer Chromecast) but could not edit the database like I wanted (the automatic indexing made waaaay too many errors). It seems logical to me that a media database is stored once on the NAS and accessed by the client devices – not stored (and maintained!) on each and every client device. Or am I doing it wrong?

  176. they are slowly pushing the home consumer out of their business plan. ……my opinion at least. if their OS wasn’t so FREEKIGN AWESOME, i wouldn’t give two shiznits.

  177. Let’s be honest here. Do an even slightly considerable number of owners even use this? I’m all for knocking on Synology for all of their anti-consumer behavior for the last several years, but this doesn’t seem like. Anyone other than complete noobs, will instantly lose VS, and go to 3rd party apps. And rightfully so.

  178. I am mostly worried about Photo Station (Incl. it’s ability to play iPhone videos properly), as I am using it as my main photo/video sharing app. EDIT: And thumbnail generation.

  179. I guess we should keep an eye on QNAP to see if they EOL their Video Station.

I’m one of the outliers here; I don’t use VS and seldom use Plex even though I have a lifetime subscription. I consider my collection to be very well organized so I just use the DLNA server to send video to my TV and and am quite satisfied with that. It’s about as simple as it gets.

  180. I’ve been on the fence about which NAS to get, Synology or UGreen, I also want to see the UniFi NAS before I make a decision. I was hoping Synology were going to do a massive revamp of VideoStation into (as you mentioned) a single Multimedia App with AudioStation, etc. People say with Synology your paying mostly for the software, well if they carry on down this road of pushing these things to third parties then that doesn’t hold up as much and you start to ask why the NASs only come with 1GBE for the most part, integrated graphics becoming more rare, etc. I was like 90% sure I was going to get a Synology… now I’m more like 60%, that could go even lower once I see what Ubiquity come out with (if anything). This is a step backwards in my view from Synology.

  181. Plex uses their own codecs in their folder, will that work ?
We use video station here, lots of recorded classes in there that I usually access through my Samsung TV..
I’m thinking in perhaps moving those files to Plex folder and see how it goes.
There is already a Plex for DSM 7.2.2 available.

  182. Synology is literally ONLY relevant due to their software. They have been destroyed on hardware… who over at Synology is like “lets remove features from the only thing that gives us the leg up in the market” do they just want to kill of home users? If they want to be Dell they should just tell people.

  183. great thing about VideoStation was QuickConnect support, but nowadays (zero-config) VPNs are common,
that said, frankly DS File is more pleasant experience than DS Video, should deserve some refresh, but it works,
interesting thing about HEVC end is a potential future for use of AV1 codec (which is superior, and free?) – I wonder which Synology NASes and client devices can handle that yet?

  184. I am a QNAP user for very long time (almost 10 years). I have been years wanted to join the synology team, specially to try their acclaimed software. This year i decided to buy one Synology NAS, so i have been waiting so far for the Synology’s new releases (now on September). Now I am wondering how the EOL of Video Station will be impact with the new releases models. Maybe I will end up buying a Ugreen NAS :-/

  185. It’s primarily a problem for the weaker j series devices. On our DS220j only Video Station is the only usable media server app, Jellyfin can’t even be installed properly and Plex is also becoming worse with their business model and shift away from local media playback. So glad I switched to Infuse on Apple TV, the NAS just needs to provide the files and do nothing else…

  186. Got Synology a month ago among other things thanks to your videos. Complete software package was not the only but was one of the deciding factors for me. Finding out yesterday on Reddit that they are ending VideoStation and “crippling” SynologyPhotos was a low blow. But after a while I read their “switch to something else” help page, realized even my jNAS has Docker, installed Jellyfin and didn’t even had to apply for my own API keys and stuff like with VideoStation… so… yeah. Though with their pricing it’s still a crooked move, as a buyer expects them not to remove existing features.

  187. Well, this is a bummer. I have all of my videos in video station. I like the clean interface. I have Plex but moved away from it for the clean interface on video station. Boo Synology!

  188. Soo disappointing. I use both Plex and Disk Station. I like that DS doesn’t have all the ads and added “stuff”. Sometimes I just want to watch my files… I probably use DS more than Plex even though I have a lifetime plan. I can only hope that they eventually roll out with a better option and don’t get rid of it all together.

  189. They probably wanted to have this version out before releasing the first 25-model (which probably will require 7.2.2 and up), so in that way it makes sense. It could also mean that the road is now paved to release either the 1625+ or 1825+ shortly.
