Synology RS2423+ and RS2423RP+ Rackstation is Coming

New Synology RS2423+12-Bay Rackstation Coming for 2022/2023

The Synology RSx23 and DSx23 Range are shaping up to be one of the busiest ranges from Synology for quite a few years, with recent information passed to me on a new 12-Bay expandable Rackstation solution, the Synology RS2423+ NAS. This new system information arrives alongside those of quite a large number of new smaller-scale systems that are planned for release towards the end of 2022 and the start of 2023, but this rackmount NAS is a new entry into a popular SMB (Small/Medium Business) tier of the brand’s portfolio and is the planned follow up to the RS2421+/RS2421RP+ that was released in March 2021, with seemingly very similar architecture planned. Very little is known about this device right now and I would certainly peg it for a Q1 2023 (Jan-March) release, as this is typically the window for this kind of solution, but lets discuss the new RS2423+/RS2423RP+ and everything we know, as well as a few predictions.

What do we know about the Synology RS2423+ and RS2423RP+ NAS?

Information on the Synology RS2423+ and RS2423RP+ Rackstation NAS arrived with me from a trusted site and references/links to an official Synology source, so I am 99.9% sure this system is real/legit. There was further information relating to a new CPU, but as this was an element of the information is unverifiable, I won’t share it here (but as soon s it IS, I will add it as an update to the article above). However, what we do know about this system is the following;

  • The Synology RS2423+ is a 12-Bay Rackstation NAS that is also available in an RP (Redundant PSU) version, such like it’s predecessor the RS2421+/RS2421RP+
  • These new Rackstation systems will use a new /updated Rackstation Expansion chassis, the Synology R1223RP to add an additional 12-Bays of Storage to your primary Synology Rackmount NAS
  • The CPU and Memory of the RS2423+ is TBC, but it IS confirmed that the rackmount will be using traditional PCIe Upgrade methods over PCIe 3 (supporting the E10M20-T1, M2D20, E10G18-T1, E10G21-F2, etc) and not the smaller form factor upgrades such as the E10G22-T1-mini
  • HDD Support is unconfirmed, but expect similar to the RS822+/RS822RP+
  • Expect a 2U height Rackmount at 88 mm x 482 mm x 552 mm size for the regular 350W PSU RS2423+ and 88 mm x 482 mm x 578 mm for the RS2423RP+ 250W dual PSU version
  • No native/on-board m.2 NVMe SSD Bays

As it stands, that is all that I can confirm at this time. I will update this article accordingly as further information arrives and/or is confirmed

Unfortunately, at this time, this is pretty much everything that we have to go on right now for this new Synology rackmount. The big question is likely going to be about the CPU. The RS2421+/RS2421RP+ that arrived midday through 2021 arrived with the AMD Ryzen V1500B Quad Core Processor and 4GB of ECC DDR4 Memory. Over the last two years, Synology has been slowly upgrading the SMB/Mid-sized business solutions that formally featured the Intel C3538 Atom with this newer, more efficient and powerful embedded Ryzen V1000 CPU. So, right now it is not known what the next choice of CPU for this product family will be. The RS422+ featured an AMD embedded Ryzen R1600 Dual Core processor, but this seems to a tiny bit of a step back when compared again this scale of storage, the product family and especially when you line it up with the RS822+ in between. Wee will have to wait and see how Synology proceeds on this one. With regard to connectivity, I do not think we are going to see anything greater than multiple 1GbE ports by default on this system. Never say never etc, but given that I understand this system will still keep its PCIe upgradability, then chances are that Synology will settle on this system being 10/25G upgradeable via their range of supported upgrade cards, rather than have greater than gigabit connectivity by default.

When Do We Think the Synology RS2423+ NAS Will Be Released?

Unfortunately, ZERO information is available right now on the eventual release and availability of the Synology RS2423+ and RS2423RP+. As mentioned earlier, this scale and type of solution tends to arrive in the Q1/Q2 period of the year usually, which would put the release of the RS2423+ much further into 2023. We will update this page with further information on this NAS as it arrives, so if you want to be kept aware of it, chuck your email in the email change notifications box below (you won’t be creating an account or anything). Stay tuned!

      1. When does Synology typically drop new hardware? I’m desperately in need of upgrading, and I’ve been looking at the DS1621xs+ to replace my aging and now almost full DS1513+, but I don’t want to buy 2 year old out of date hardware just to have them release something new and improved 2 weeks later.

Do they have traditional dates for new hardware like say Apple?

Depending on the price delta, I might consider the 1823xs+ you mentioned in the video, if they’re not likely to update the 1621xs+ soon.

      2. My prediction:
The j, value and play series (if it doesn’t disappear) will mount ARM Realtek RTD1619 processors with 1Gb ethernet.
J series with 1Gb, play series with 2Gb and value series with 4Gb (this is the maximum available for this CPU).

The plus series will have x86 AMD Ryzen R1600 processors with upgradable memory.

The first NAS could be released will be the ds223 and ds423

      3. I was surprised at how highly you two spoke of the arm processors in the 223j. My first nas was a 220j and it was terribly underwhelming in performance. Maybe it was the 512MB of Ram, but it absolutely failed miserably when I tried running multiple applications especially when I was uploading photos and videos from my phone to photo station would make the system completely unusable for anything else as it tried to process the files and index them. I tolerated it for a few months then upgraded to the DS920+ and I LOVE it. It does everything I ask of it with ease.

      4. Btw. according to the source code packages, the EPYCs will – finally – use Linux kernel v5. Unfortunately, in classic Synology fashion, an older version missing some AMD and/or EPYC optimizations.

      5. I bought DS1621xs+ just a year ago. With all the functionality it does, I do not think I will upgrade to DS1823xs+ when it comes out as all specifications you had put it. As long as Synology sorts out the HDD brand compatibility list for using other brands in their sets, I would refuse to jump into the trap.

      6. I am just waiting for a Synology with ARM-processor in a DS15xx-series, guess I can live with my DS918 a couple more years since 1GBit is ok for me so far (just photo editing from my client and store data there).

      7. Will Synology release any NAS’es with the mainstream Intel Core/AMD Ryzen processors? I love the new QNAPs, with the Intel 12th Gen, purely for the 12th Gen’s QuickSync capabilities with Plex. Unfortunately Plex doesn’t support AMD hardware transcoding, otherwise I’d definitely get some sweet, efficient and powerful Zen3/4 one. I’m also thinking of building my DIY NAS with TrueNAS or UNRAID, but it’s really hard to find a modern Mini-ITX motherboard with 4+ SATA ports and a minimum of 2.5GBe ethernet so, QNAP’s 12th Gen Intel solutions look perfect at the moment

      8. Funny how Eddie sometimes makes faces while listening to Robbie as if to say…nah, he really talks too much and too fast…
And for crying out loud Robbie…. it’s not Ryzon. It’s Ryzen. Zen. Get it.?

      9. I know this might be a strange question, but has someone ever tried to use 4x 100TB Nimbus Data drives in a 4 bay Synology or Qnap? I know this seems to be complete nuts but from the technical point of view, would that even work?

      10. Synology it’s an mess, on one side dismiss surveillance market without an competitive product with user diy DVA (enable user to add Nvidia GPU or USB m.2 you) and that insanity about “blessed hard drives’, meanwhile no nvme-only Nas no compact pro-sumer units as an all flash successor for desktop FS1018 , and while at last they offer WiFi 6 router’s Asus (reference Brand for good routers) sells a bunch of WiFi 6e with powerful opensource o more featured and even slightly cheaper. I’m quite disappointed and bet no single cent on Synology future.

      11. Straight off the bat guys, I apologise for the ‘humming’ sound in this vid. Trying to sync mine and Eddie’s sound proved 10x harder than it should have been and in the end the balance of the audio was leveraged more towards Eddie (as I am always the louder/noisier/more-annoying one!). Sorry if this makes it tough to listen to at points (particularly when I go a bit ‘high’! Have a great weekend everyone!
