The QNAP TS-877-1700-16G Ryzen 7 NAS – Could this be the Most POWERFUL Desktop NAS we have ever seen?
Originally covered much earlier in the year, the QNAP TS-x77 series has really been a NAS that puts the POW into powerful. It was originally uncovered along with the TS-453BT3 and has really taken its sweet time to arrive! TIll it’s release, the two most powerful hardware enabled QNAP NAS devices to date were the TVS-x82 series and the TVS-x73 series. The former featuring a powerful and multipurpose CPU from Intel, the latter featuring an impressive Radeon supported AMD graphical chip. However, the TS-877 manages to take a leaf out of both their books and include a stunningly powerful AMD Ryzen chip in both 6 or 8 Cores at upto 3.7GHz – that is some SERIOUS horsepower. But is there more to this NAS server than just big numbers? Let’s take a look and see whether this device lives up to the pricetag.
What can the QNAP TS-877 Ryzen NAS Server do?
As mentioned, the TS-877-1600 NAS is powered by AMD’s new 14nm Ryzen processor redefines the high-end desktop business NAS for greater video and virtual machine performance above all others with up to 8 cores/16 threads native processing that can reach upto 3.7GHz clock speed. Cutting-edge hardware integrated with multitasking software makes the TS-877 the preeminent choice to tackle resource-demanding applications and tasks. This CPU means you can keep all transmissions of data in and out safe with fast AES-NI encryption acceleration and up to 64GB DDR4 RAM to keep things moving smoothly. Additionally, the QNAP TS-877 delivers aggressive yet power-smart performance to meet your multitasking demands and is capable of running up to 7 virtual machines simultaneously. For resource-demanding business applications such as VDI, R&D, private cloud, and server virtualization, the TS-877 with gold-standard performance is your ideal choice. With 10GBe enabled across two ports (purchased separately) speeds can reach breathtaking heights of 2,344MB/s Read and 1,761MB/s Write

SSD, M.2 SSD and PCIe Expandability with the QNAP TS-1277 NAS
The TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 from QNAP also provide two 2.5-inch SSD slots dedicated for caching to increase IOPS performance, and supports optional M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSDs. Using an SSD cache boosts overall system performance, and is perfect for improving the overall workflow of random IOPS demanding applications such as virtualization.
Qtier™ Technology empowers the TS-877 with auto tiering that further helps continuously optimize storage efficiency across M.2 SSD, SSD, high-capacity SATA drives, and the optional PCIe NVMe SSD with around-the-clock acceleration. The new Qtier™ 2.0 features IO-awareness that empowers SSD tiered storage with a cache-like reserved space to handle burst I/O in real time, greatly maximizing the advantages of SSD.
Additionally the QNAP TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 feature three PCIe slots (1 x PCIe 3.0 x8, 1 x PCIe 3.0 x4, 1 x PCIe 2.0 x4) that allow for installing 10GbE/40GbE network cards, QM2 M.2 SSD/10GbE PCIe cards, or compatible wireless network cards for greater application potential. QNAP feature several PCIe upgrade cards for their NAS such as:
10GbE/ 40GbE adapters
Install 10GbE/40GbE adapters to support lightning-fast throughput for bandwidth-demanding tasks such as virtualization and fast backup/restoration for an ever-growing amount of data.
QM2 M.2 SSD/10GbE cards
Install QNAP’s innovative QM2 M.2 SSD/10GbE card to add M.2 SSD caching or 10GbE (10GBASE-T) connectivity to the NAS to enjoy optimal performance.
Wireless network cards
Install a compatible wireless network card to work with WirelessAP Station to transform the NAS into a convenient wireless base station, allowing network resources of the NAS to be shared with multiple devices.
The TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 – Possible the best VM NAS QNAP have ever built
The TS-x77 series truly is the most rugged and well designed All-in-one server to host virtual machines and containers that we at NASCompares have encountered yet. it isn’t just because of the software – Both VM Station and Container are readily available on most mid to high-end QNAP NAS. Indeed, Virtualization Station and Container Station jointly introduce a hybrid approach to virtualization. No matter your virtualization needs, you can count on QNAP for complete virtualization support. However what REALLY sets the TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 apart from the other NAS that host virtual machines is:
- First off, that 3 Tier storage over HDD and SSD – With many files being shared or accessed more regularly than others, it is often paramount that those files are kept on much faster storage media for one or all users to reach as quickly as possible. Likewise, with improved caching over m.2 SSD, the internal operations are improved vastly too and this can almost completely remove any system bottleneck that RAM/Memory cannot overcome
- The high end graphically enabled chip, coupled with the increased cores, means that you can dedicate large portions of hardware resources to virtual machines or contained bespoke operations and not feel that you are are working beyond your means
- The multiple available PCIe slots can be used to install graphics and other rendering cards – these can either be used for individual use per virtual machine or even on bulk – so no longer are you limited by ‘set-in-stone’ hardware when you want to be especially creative with your virtual creations!
- Access to a 450W PSU, providing a 8-pin (6+2) power connector and a 6-pin power connector for a graphics card. Graphics cards are optimized for graphical calculations and transformations, but require significantly more power compared to other hardware. The TS-877 offers PCIe slots to support AMD Radeon™ or NVIDIA® graphics cards and a 450 watt power supply that is capable of powering a graphics card for boosting imaging processing in QTS and performance of virtual machines via GPU pass-through. Supported graphics cards cannot exceed dimensions of up to 266 x 112 x 45 mm. It is also worth noting that GPU support for QTS only applies to NVIDIA graphics cards. GPU Passthrough for VM is supported by AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. Below is the current compatible graphics cards for the TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277:
Graphics and GPU Cards for the QNAP TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 NAS
All cards require HD Station /Linux Station /Hardware Transcoding /Virtualization Station in order to be useable.
What is the software like on the QNAP TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 NAS
With modularized multiple applications and functions, QTS enhances management efficiency, personal productivity, multimedia, and much more, making your NAS experience easier, efficient, and more flexible! The new Qboost provides a NAS optimization tool that helps accelerate applications, free up system resources, and schedule applications. The built-in App Center with hundreds of install-on-demand apps realizes far more extensive NAS functionality. QTS breaks the barriers of devices, platforms, and geography to bring you optimized cloud experiences and incorporates advanced features.
It centrally stores data and files, and supports SMB/CIFS, AFP and NFS protocols for file sharing across Windows®, Mac®, and Linux®/UNIX® networks. Coupled with Qsync (a utility that turns a QNAP NAS into a safe, high-capacity data center for file synchronization) any file uploaded to the TS-877 will be made available for all linked devices, such as computers, laptops or mobile devices. You can sync shared folders and team folders for group file sharing to enhance the flexibility of team projects and collaboration. Files can be centrally managed using File Station, including files from mobile devices and optical disc drives. File Station also allows you to mount a remote NAS, and transfer files between your NAS and public cloud services for greater convenience.
Lastly, the TS-677, TS-877 and TS-1277 provide a reliable, flexible backup & disaster recovery solution to assist organizations in routine backup jobs with cost-efficiency and high productivity. Priority support is given to snapshot is essential for NAS data protection, and its block-level feature makes it a dependable method for protecting data in the face of the growing threat of ransomware. The TS-877 supports up to 256 snapshots per volume or LUN, and maximum 1,024 snapshots per NAS. As for VM safety, with high performance, potentially huge storage capacities, integrated virtualization solutions, and support for snapshots that record the state of the system at any time, the TS-877 are perfect for backing up virtual machines.
