Record and download streaming movies and shows from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, The CW and more on NAS

I think my situation is pretty basic. I currently have a NSA: Seagate personal cloud (3TB) that I use for both PC backups and movie storage. Chiefly my kids (under 3) watch Disney movies (on my SmartTV – android OS) utilizing Plex. I use a service called PlayOn to record the movies that I store on the drive (if you haven’t heard of it, its like a DVR for streaming services). PlayOn maxes out at 720p, thus 95% of my movies are 720p. However, I would like something that can cast (for lack of a better word) 4K movies to my TV when and if I find a way to get digital copies of them.

I have never had any problems with my current setup other than I have been running out of space. So I figured, I would buy a new movie only server. I don’t really intend to use it outside my house but maybe one day, in the future, if we are on vacation or something like that.

I am not looking to spend a ton (I only have about 1TB of movies currently). But I would like to do it right the first time (future proof a bit) so I don’t have to buy something different in a couple years. I would prefer not to buy something the requires a lot of physical room (so I can keep it in my cabinet).

What would you recommend ?

If you have an access to downloaded video files, you could set up Plex server on your PC or enable DLNA access. Then you could cast or see content on your smart TVs. But if you want to do it from the NAS because of extra storage space, then Celeron based NAS would be a recommendation. Even older DS218+ (DS220+ as new one) could allow you to create a Windows virtual machine so you could install this Playon app. Then you can access videos from the NAS.

I hope this helps.
