Reformat harddrives for Btrfs – Synology

Reformat harddrives for Btrfs.
I upgraded recently from a Synology ds213J to a ds218+ by just moving my harddrives and run the migration. My question:

Is there any way I can reformat the harddrives to Btrfs? Can I reformat one by simply removing one of them and reformat the other. Put them back and copy all the data from the one still on the old file format. Then again removing them, reformat the other one, put them both back and have all the data copied?

Or can I use my old ds213J or simply another harddrive. Make a copy of all the files. Reformat the two drives and copy all the data back to the ds218+.

There are several ways of doing it. If your old Synology has 2 drives which you want to move to a new Synology, but with different file system:

  • Copy data to a third drive, then move drives, reformat to btrfs and copy data back
  • remove one drive, put it in the new NAS, then reformat with btrfs, insert another drive, copy data and add another drive as a RAID1.

If you have moved drives already, you can convert RAID1 to Basic jbod with this command. But always remember to have a backup, just in case.
