Synology DS720+ 2-Bay NAS – Early Information Revealed

Synology DS720+ NAS – Leaked Doc

It is starting to look like the long wait for the Synology 2020+ Diskstation series is drawing to a close with the reveal of some documentation relating to the DS720+ NAS (along with a few others too) that confirm that a new expandable 2-Bay NAS Drive is on its way. The Synology DS720+ NAS would be the follow up to the popular 2017 released DS718+ NAS and one that many users have been waiting for. The DS7xx+ 2-Bay from Synology has always served as the top tier of their 2 drive series, with support of an intel quad-core CPU, dual LAN, expandability with the DX517 and overall providing the very best 2-Bay NAS experience the company has to offer. The DS720+ will almost certainly continue in this fashion (though there are hopes for improves 2.5Gbe as standard, perhaps the J4105/J4115,J4125 CPU – purely speculation) but right now we have so little to go on that it would be impossible to make even a tangential prediction on this. Let’s talk about why we at NASCompares think the DS720+ NAS is coming.

Disclaimer – If you are looking for hardware specifications (CPU, memory, connections, architecture) then you might want to stop reading now. This article is about the information that indicates that the DS720+ NAS is very much in development. If you came for the data sheets and specs, I am afraid I will disappoint you on this one for now.

What do we know about the DS720+ Diskstation NAS so far?

Much like any piece of hardware, NAS Drives need to have a whole bunch of paperwork behind them. Yes, the real hardware is done at a development level, but for a product to be distributed correctly you need docs! Import, export, legal, encryption – you name it, all the countries of the world require it. Below is a document that was passed to us :

As you can see, it is related to a Synology DS720PLUS and we have seen enough of these here on the blog and YouTube to know that this is a pretty formal step from any brand to produce their products globally (or at least I the case of this document, Korea). Sure, it is lacking the sexy and remarkably interesting details such as the specifications, but there this is a very positive step and one that heavily implies that this product will be arriving in 2020. We have seen examples in the past of import/export docs relating to new hardware from many brands that ended up not arriving at the commercial level, or being held, reimagined and arriving in a bigger, better and more modern form down the line (DS619slim > DS620slim for example), but these are quite formal steps for a brand to take and I think would heavily indicate that this NAS is very much on the way.

When Do We think the Synology DS720+ NAS Drive be Released?

Of course, the release of this Synology diskstation expandable NAS is the bigger question. I think we can comfortably state a few things, if indeed the DS720+2-Bay information above relates to concrete product development. 1, that the naming of the product into the DSx20+/2020 naming convention relates to it being a release in the first 6-8 months of the year, as Synology typically will assign the YEAR stamp to a model ID when it arrives in the first half (8 months at a push) of the year, with anything afterwards being designated the year after (eg 2021 / DSx21+). The next consideration is, of course, the impact of COVID-19 on all areas of brand production, distribution and buyer engagement. This means that we can certainly consider that the DS720+ (if at all) in late Summer, early autumn. Many would have no doubt speculated this already (as they did last year for 2019/2020), but still never the less this does seem to be a more formal step in the right direction.
