4 Bay NAS

I’m looking to find a good solution that is used strictly for file sharing and backup. I had a Seagate BlackArmor NAS 220 that gave up after running for a little over 10 years using WD Black 2TB drives that were RAID 0 as I needed the space. So i’m looking to expand to more than 4TB at this point.

Need to be able manage the storage via web interface. Would like to be able to connect an external eSATA or USB drive that I can copy data to for off-site storage.

$700 – $1000 including drives 4TB to 8 TB

You will be more than pleased with a ds918+ from Synology. It comes with fast USB3 ports as well as esata port. You can set up one drive redundancy and even add extra storage with an expansion unit. You can schedule computer backups, have automatic mobile backups as well as external drive backups. Synology will automatically back up itself to the external drive at the moment you connect it. Then beep when it’s done. Or you can even set up a remote backup somewhere in the remote location.

The web interface will feel easy o understand and yet feature rich. If you can not stretch your budget to ds918+ get a ds418play which is a great NAS and been a very popular choice among other NAS users. As an absolute budget option, you may look at d418 with Realtek processor- not very fast but would cope very well with file sharing and backup functions.
