Access Microsoft Office Application externally, via net application or cloud

Can I use the device to install and run my Microsoft Office Application?
I need to access the data on-board the device externally, via net application or cloud.
I want this NAS to last me a long time. Not very heavy use on our part though.

The cheapest way of doing this would be subscribing to Microsoft Office 360 cloud version of these apps. But if you prefer to keep files secure in your office then getting a NAS like DS718+ (cheapest option DS218+) from Synology or TS-253Be from Qnap will help.

This all is achieved using mini virtual apps called Docker. Docker is a lightweight virtualization application that gives you the ability to run thousands of containers created by developers from all over the world on DSM. The hugely popular built-in image repository, Docker Hub, allows you to find shared applications from other talented developers.

Instructions how to install mini-apps- called containers here.

Applied Models

  • 19 series:RS1619xs+, RS1219+, DS1819+
  • 18 series:FS1018, RS3618xs, RS818RP+, RS818+, RS2818RP+, RS2418RP+, RS2418+, DS3018xs, DS918+, DS718+, DS218+, DS1618+
  • 17 series:FS3017, FS2017, RS3617xs, RS3617RPxs, RS4017xs+, RS3617xs+, RS18017xs+, DS3617xs, DS1817+, DS1517+

The other option is simply creating a virtual machine on the NAS. This will mean you will have full windows installation on the NAS with office suite and other application. You can connect to this virtual machine from your mobile app or desktop computer wherever you are.

Here is how to do it:
