Expandable storage recommendation

I’m thinking of setting up a business from home doing video work – anything from VHS transfers to HD edits and (eventually) 4k and above. Needless to say, I’ll be needing all the storage space I can get, but I’d like to do it the most cost-effective way possible. One idea is to invest in (say) an eight-bay NAS, but only a couple of large HDDs at first (in RAID 1), and then add more disks as necessary and as finances permit. I can then expand into RAID 5, and maybe ultimately RAID 6.

Is this making sense so far?

A secondary consideration is that it would be extremely helpful for the NAS to have an HDMI Out, so that I can easily check works in progress on a standard television.

Is that achievable?

Finally, these aren’t deal-breakers, but it would be a very welcome bonus if there’s a NAS out there that ticks all the above boxes, and also can be used as a home media centre. I’m talking about things like YouTube, Kodi, DLNA support, web browser, P2P client… The usual suspects. I do have a bit of experience with a QNAP TS-451A, which I think could do just about everything I’ve mentioned, even if the interface always felt a little clunky. I’m not tied to the brand, but that’s a reference point for you (i.e. something bigger, better, and more expandable than a TS-451a). The trickiest problem is that my starting budget (including HDDs) is less than £1000.

There wont be anything cheaper then TS-653B. The other option would be TVS-673e (or 8bay option). You need something with PCIe slot especially if you are planing to do 4K editing and expansion. It will tick all boxes you have mentioned. You can start with only two drives and change a RAID types as you add more drives without need to move the data and reset the system. You can easily turn this NAS into a PC by adding a mouse, keyboard and a monitor. Many people do that for surveillance purposes.
