Best NAS for Massive RAW Video Files
We are an Aerial photography company and shoot video in up to 6K Pro res RAW and Cinema DNG- as you can imagine files are huge up to 4+Gb/s so I know this machine needs to be fast. I’ve spoken with a couple of computer guys who suggest the 1819+ I know this is a good NAS, but I’m wondering more or will it be quick enough to cope with the amount of data that I will need to be pulling from it?
I understand my machine may need an upgraded card- not sure if I can check the Ethernet ports to see if they are 1 or 10Gbe? We do have a USB C port in the back, and think that we can get adapters for Thunderbird to this, but it’ll slow it down? Just looking for your suggestions really, is it a pipe dream to be able to edit these huge files from the NAS, or will I have to work on them on the desktop, and just send the files across to the NAS for storage?
Budget is mainly for the NAS box, I will look at populating it with 2 12 or 14tb drives to start and add as we go along if possible. I know there is a Qnap T3 that would be capable, but at around £4000 without storage its out of my price range, and wonder if that would be overkill anyway as its just 1 workstation that will be directly linked.
Thanks again for your time,

Best RAW Video NAS for Speed and Budget
Good afternoon Ollie. Thanks for watching/reading my efforts (I am going to hope you enjoyed them and/or found them useful). The Synology DS1819+ NAS is a good idea, but due to your file type and media in mind (thanks for the heads up on that), it would be a pretty hard job for it to keep on top of. To be perfectly honest, you are certainly looking at a £3,000+ for a high end Xeon powered NAS or a top tier i7. However, all is not lost and there is actually a decently priced NAS that might well be up to the job.
Have you considered the TVS-472XT (the 6 or 8 Bay)? He is my review, but before you click the link, read the points underneath
Review Link – https://nascompares.com/qnap-tvs-472xt-nas-review/
Reasons Why I recommend the QNAP TVS-472XT for BIG FILES, that is still fast and affordable:
1 – This is a 10Gbe and TB3 enabled box (so you can start on 10Gbe and upgrade your client devices to TB3 later when ready.
2 – It also features a PCIe slot for adding further connectivity if needed. Perhaps more 10Gbe, 1Gbe or a USB 3.1 Gen 2 card for adding those ports for faster 10Gb/s backup drives
3 – It features a Pentium 8th Gen CPU (much, much better for handling these files, as well as a more graphical embedded component that will be of bigger benefit to those dense files), or the 6 bay with a 4-Core i3 and 8-bay with a 6-Core i5 (all 8th Gen and graphically enabled)
4 – 2x NVMe slots inside that can be used now or later, to vastly improve internal file handling – so you will have effectively removed the internal AND external bottleneck of reading/writing these weighty files.
Many users are still unaware that the QNAP TVS-472XT is available, as the older and well-publicized QNAP TS-453BT3 got a lot of attention. However, this (much like the DS1819+) would just not be able to handle the files in the way you describe.
Here was a brief comparison I made of the TVS-472XT and the TS-453BT3. It is a little fluffy, but the point is pretty clear – https://nascompares.com/2018/11/08/qnap-tvs-472xt-vs-ts-453bt3-thunderbolt-nas-comparison/
Is there a QNAP TVS-472X, TVS-672X or TVS-872X NAS Planned?
A common question many users have replied with when I have recommended the QNAP TVS-472XT NAS, is:
Is there a non-thunderbolt version of the TVS-472XT? i.e. a TVS-472X?
Sadly, right now there does not seem to be plans to release a non-Thunderbolt version of this NAS. So, right now, for a user who wants fast, heavy file handling, expandability and future proofing, but not break the bank, the QNAP TVS-472XT and TVS-672XT are my personal recommendations
You can purchase the QNAP TVS-472XT from the guys at nascompares.com or Amazon via the links below (I have also included a couple of other alternatives that are lower/higher in price, speed and storage etc):
QNAP HS-453DX NAS | QNAP TVS-672XT NAS | QNAP TVS-1282-i7-450W |
3rd Tier Choice | 2nd Tier Choice | 1st Tier Choice |

Hi, your channel is a real inspiration. I have a question: considering that an iMac only has Gigabit Ethernet but also has Thunderbolt 3, would it be a good idea to use a Thunderbolt to 10GB Ethernet adapter to connect to a Synology? Thanks
