I currently have a Synology DS-410 as a personal NAS, and it has worked well for years, but it is limited to DSM 5.x, and only 4 drives.
I’m looking for a new NAS that will be used for both personal (data storage/computer backups/media server/anti-virus (active BitDefender subscription available)/personal cloud) and business (data storage/computer backups/VPN (active NordVPN subscription)/anti-virus (active BitDefender subscription available)/email server (purchased/registered 2 domains)/possibly website hosting/security cameras/business cloud).
I’m looking for the following specs:
CPU that is powerful, efficient, and stable – please provide pros/cons of various options ie. Xeon vs Pentium vs Atom vs …
RAM suitable for above listed use case, and expandable
10GB option – native or add-in card
minimum 8 bays, and would like to have an option for expanding capacity
form factor is not a primary concern$1500 – $3000 CDN
With so many things running simultaneously you have few options there – DS1817+, FS1018 or DS3617xs. And that is Atom vs Pentium vs Xeon. DS1817+ with Atom CPU benchmark around 2085, FS1018 with Pentium benchmark around 5000 and Xeon with a benchmark around 8000.
People choose different CPU for different purposes. Atom is usually used for file servers and many user environments. Pentium is not very popular anymore but it is a good choice for virtualization beginners as well as video editors. The Xeon is a top choice for serious virtualization, web/database servers, and high-speed data transfers.
By the look of it – you would be fine with DS1817+ which can be upgraded with more ram and 10GbE card. You can also use some of the bays for caching and ports at the back or expansion. It is a Synology 8 bay flagship which is also a popular choice between customers.
