Alternative to TV Mosaic – JellyFin

Best NAS solution

My current networked solution is a stand alone pc, that is running Ubuntu, and I can remote in using putty or do file transfer (through wins +r cmd). As far as media I use jellyfin.

Needless to say I’d like something that is a bit more manageable and user friendly for the home. Something simple to use that my partner can find what she’s looking for and something we can both access, easily, via our phones on the go.

Primary uses would be streaming FHD media, storing photos, music, TV shows as well as file back ups of desktops.

I am a PhD student, so, having back ups of work and having that easily accessible would be fantastic.

As a lesser requirement is the ability for the nas to grow as data expands in size with more data hungry things like 4k videos being more popular as time goes by.

I would recommend Synology plus series like old DS218+ or new DS220+ or Qnap TS-251d/ TS-253Be. You can install virtual machines or docker on these models. And then install things like JellyFin or Plex for recording your live TV shows and organise multimedia.
If you need something cheaper then DS218play would be an option and you could record TV via DS Video app they provide.

All these models support 4K direct streaming or even transcoding using DS Video app.

I hope this helps.
