First NAS advice

First Nas advice. I am looking into buying a Nas to store my movie and TV show library and I have been doing some research but I am not sure what a good choice would be. I know quite a lot about computers, networks etc as I used to work in this area but since I moved on to programming the updates and Nas area are outside my expertise.

The differences in CPU speed and dual core over quad core kinda put me off track where people are saying a dual core is sometimes better then the quad core even though the overall speed says otherwise.

Now I know this depends on needs and how much simultaneous connections you are going to use but to be future proof I would like to get the best bang for my buck.

Another concern is whether or not it is worth waiting for the 2019 models over buying a 2018 model right now.

I started out looking for 2 bay but saw a video of you where a 4 bay might be cheaper if you choose different HDD (smart, did not even consider that a 4 bay might end up cheaper).

So my question is: should I buy a Nas now or is it better to wait? And if so, what would a good future proof option be?

Also, if plex comes into the picture, does the transcoding become a problem?

Used by: 1 to 3 users
For: mostly streaming media to devices and storing data for safekeeping
Usage type: home user. Below 1000 euro’s HDD incl.  8tb+

The DS918+ is a NAS which you can not go wrong with! It is now a best seller of all times. It can handle multimedia including new generation 4K videos. It can serve as a super fast backup server, file server, and even virtualization solution. The sky is the limit.

Choosing a number of bays

Many people cannot decide between 2 and 4 bay NAS. But the truth is simple. In a long run, more bays turn out to be a cheaper solution. With a two-bay using RAID1 you get only half of the potential storage space. But with a 4 bay, you can also start with 2 drives, but later you can add the additional drive. Using RAID5 protection mode- you get 66% of storage available allowing one drive to fail without data loss.

Should I get this year’s model or wait?

People ask this question every day. And the answer is – the best time to buy is today. There will be models released every quarter of the year. The only thing what matters is your requirements. The software updates will be given to you free of charge. The DS918+ supports Full HD and even 4K streaming and transcoding. This will make this model last for another 5 years and be up to date.

Best for Plex

Plex is very spec demanding. DS918+ will allow all kinds of media streaming locally and even allow you to transcode Full HD videos over the internet using a Plex server. For 4K transcoding, I would recommend using Synology DS Video app.
