NAS recommendation for Plex DVR and 4K UHD

NAS recommendation for Plex DVR and 4K UHD. I’ve been viewing quite a few videos from your youtube channel and I wanted to reach out to get some advice / recommendations on what my next NAS should be. I’d be happy to purchase all equipment from your store moving forward as long as the warranty applies in Canada 🙂

Current Setup:;

I currently have a custom PC with an AMD Ryzen 1800X processor and 32GB of RAM as my Plex Server. I have no issues with playback at this point as most of my Plex clients leverage direct play (Nvidia Shield TV + Samsung QLED TVs)

I also have a Synology DS412+ unit that acts as one version of my file backup currently.

Future Setup:

I’m looking to decommission this PC and move this function to a NAS device. I will also be leveraging this NAS as an NLE Video Editor (minimal) and a Photo Storage for RAW files which are edited in Lightroom + Photoshop directly from the NAS (8TB currently) expanding +4TB every year.

My main Computer moving forward will be a 2017 MacBook Pro connected to the NAS with a Sonnet 10GBe / TB3 adapter.

Plex Requirements:

With regards to the Plex Server, I use Plex’s live DVR function all the time from my HD HomeRun Extend Network Tuner connected to a live OTA antenna (This is my main form of tv viewing in the house) My concern is how does the NAS function when the DVR is set to record a show at a specific time and the NAS might be in sleep/energy saving mode? Does it wake up automatically as it sense Plex is trying to access the network?

The other main way I leverage Plex is for my collection of BluRay and UHD movie .mkv files. I typically rip my Physical media using MakeMKV and store them on the Plex server for easy access to any client in the house. (again most are direct play, but there might be one or two streams that transcode both video and audio). There typically aren’t more than 3 concurrent streams going – this is for internal network use only.

My main concern is ensuring there is enough processing power (CPU) to handle possibly scaling to 4 – 6 concurrent streams with some transcoding of both audio and video in the future. Also the ability to increase drive capacity over time as newer higher capacity drives come to market.

A similar setup would be Qnap TS-1277-1700-64G which also features Ryzen 7 CPU, but not exactly the same you have. The 4K HDR is very CPU or graphics card demanding thing to transcode- especially on a Plex. I would prefer an Intel-based solution like TS-1282T3 which feature few Thunderbolt ports as well. On top of that, it even features HDMI2.0 port for HDR streaming directly on your 4K TV. Thunderbolt ports will mean no adapters in your setup – just straight connection.

You should not worry about your DVR recordings. NAS will not hibernate unless you set it up to do so.
