The 8-bay NAS for 1080p & 4K media

I have a NAS DS414 (4 * 3 TB) that will soon arrive at saturation (91%)

I use Plex. I wanted to replace it with a good NAS that can handle 3-4 people with transcoding.
The goal is to gather the media of these families, my need for storage will easily be multiplied by 3.

I was aiming for the DS3617xs but it seems hard to find and quite expensive for a NAS that is 2 years old already (sometimes 8000€ on Amazon …).

The DS3018xs seems a good compromise but, considering the cycles at Synology, will not it be wiser to wait until December 2018 for a possible DS3619xs?

If you are transcoding only 1080p videos, then you could be fine ds918+ with expansion unit making total of 9 drives. It will also do couple of 4K transcoding streams using DS Video app. It comes with transcoding engine built in, which will mean less CPU usage. DS3018xs is an option too. It will do software transcoding. CPU will be working harder and you will experience slowdowns while multitasking (while plex transcoding is ongoing). At the end of the year synology will release DS1019+ which will be the same ds918+ with an extra bay. The DS3619xs is not planed, but if they do release it will be more expensive then previous model.
